You can add a different thumbnail for each supported language to a long-form YouTube video in YouTube Studio. Upload the main thumbnail first, then open the video’s Languages settings and add a thumbnail beside each target language. YouTube says it shows viewers thumbnails that match their language setting, but that is not a guarantee that every viewer will see a particular version—or that localization alone will increase views.
What thumbnail localization changes
A localized thumbnail is a language-specific image associated with the same video. It can keep the same composition while changing embedded wording, or use a revised design when a direct translation would be awkward or unclear. It does not create a separate video or replace the main thumbnail.

Translation is only one part of localization. Translate the words accurately, then check whether the phrasing, references, units, and visual cues make sense to the intended audience. Preserve the video’s real subject and promise, along with enough of your channel’s visual style for viewers to recognize it. Do not make a localized version imply content the video does not deliver.
YouTube documents language-specific thumbnails for long-form videos. The feature sits within a broader multi-language workflow that can also include translated titles and descriptions, captions, and audio tracks. Availability can vary; check whether the controls appear for your video in Studio.

Plan the languages and the design
Choose audiences using evidence, not assumptions
Start with your channel analytics and existing audience signals to decide which languages to prioritize. YouTube Help says that over two-thirds of a creator’s audience watch time comes from outside their home area; the page does not state a publication year, so treat that as YouTube’s general context for its translation tools, not a current guarantee about your own channel. Your analytics can help prioritize effort, but they do not prove demand for every language or market.
Decide what should change
For each audience, decide whether to translate the thumbnail text, replace it with a more natural short phrase, or remove it if the image works better without words. Keep the central subject, composition, and promise consistent when they remain understandable. Adapt cultural references or units when needed, without changing what the video is about.
Review meaning and tone
Ask a fluent speaker or qualified reviewer to check the wording for meaning, tone, idioms, names, and cultural context. A literal translation can be accurate word by word but still sound unnatural or carry an unintended meaning. YouTube’s recommendation that secondary language tracks match the primary-language translation as closely as possible concerns language tracks; it is not a thumbnail-specific translation rule.
Prepare files that meet YouTube’s thumbnail guidance
YouTube’s custom-thumbnail guidance, captured on October 3, 2026, recommends a 3840 × 2160-pixel image, a minimum width of 640 pixels, and a 16:9 aspect ratio for video thumbnails. It lists JPG and PNG as suitable formats. File-size limits depend on upload device: up to 2 MB for mobile video thumbnails and up to 50 MB for desktop video thumbnails. Check YouTube’s current guidance before uploading because specifications and interface details can change.
- Inspect each variant at small display size. Make sure the subject and any wording are easy to understand when the image is reduced.
- Check contrast, text legibility, and safe margins; ensure translated lines do not cover the focal subject.
- Keep a clear, recognizable relationship between variants while making the language-specific content readable.
- Export and review the actual files you plan to upload, not just the editable design.
These design checks are practical editorial guidance, not additional YouTube requirements.

Add a language-specific thumbnail in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Content.
- Choose the long-form video you want to localize.
- Upload the main thumbnail for the video.
- Open Languages for that video.
- Select the target language, then select Add next to Thumbnail.
- Upload the image made for that language. Repeat for each additional target language.
- Review the video’s translated title and description, and add captions or an audio track in that language where available and appropriate.
The language-specific thumbnail is attached to the selected language within that video’s Studio settings. YouTube says viewers are shown thumbnails matching their language setting. Its translated-video guidance also says language matching can use signals including a viewer’s language, location, and recently watched videos, so a selected language setting alone does not guarantee which presentation a viewer will receive.
Coordinate the thumbnail with the rest of the video
A localized thumbnail works best as part of a coherent viewing experience. YouTube separately documents translated titles and descriptions and says translated metadata may help reach and discoverability, including appearing in search for viewers speaking those languages. Match the image’s wording and promise to the localized title and description. Where you have them, coordinate captions and audio tracks too; a thumbnail should not promise a localized experience the video does not provide.

YouTube’s guidance discusses analyzing views and watch time by audio language, but the available platform documentation does not establish a thumbnail-only performance lift. Avoid crediting a change to the thumbnail alone unless your test design can separate its effect from other changes, such as translated metadata or audio.

The custom-thumbnail controls are unavailable
YouTube says an account must be verified to upload custom thumbnails. Check the account’s verification status and whether the feature is available for that video in Studio.
The image will not upload
Check the format, dimensions, and upload-device file-size limit against YouTube’s current custom-thumbnail guidance. The cited guidance lists JPG and PNG, recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels with a 16:9 ratio, and sets different file-size limits for mobile and desktop uploads.

The thumbnail does not appear immediately
YouTube notes that thumbnail changes can take time to appear. Allow time for the change to propagate, then check the video again rather than repeatedly uploading the same file.

You cannot add a localized thumbnail for a video
The documented feature is for long-form videos. Confirm that you are editing the intended video and look for the language-specific thumbnail control under Languages. The available guidance does not establish that every language or account has identical feature availability.
An upload limit prevents more changes
Daily custom-thumbnail upload limits may vary by country or region and channel history. If you have reached a limit, wait and try again later; do not assume that a thumbnail-specific language feature has a separate limit.
A thumbnail is rejected or raises a policy concern
All custom thumbnails must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube’s examples of disallowed content include nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content. These are general custom-thumbnail rules, not special rules for localized images.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a separate option for creators who also want to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream; it does not localize thumbnails or stream from a camera. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The stream then runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
