For 1080p playback, Netflix recommends a stable connection of at least 5 Mbps, while Twitch recommends 7–12 Mbps or higher download speed for watching 1080p60. For a YouTube Live broadcast, YouTube recommends an outgoing encoder bitrate of 10 Mbps at 1080p30 or 12 Mbps at 1080p60 with AV1/H.265; with H.264, the recommendations are 14 Mbps and 17 Mbps. These are service-specific recommendations, not guarantees or universal broadband-plan requirements.
First, distinguish watching from broadcasting
When you watch a stream, the video travels to your device, so your download speed matters. When you broadcast live, your video travels from your encoder to the platform, so your upload capacity matters. A strong upload speed does not make up for insufficient download speed when watching, and a fast download speed does not guarantee that your live broadcast can upload reliably.

Also distinguish a service’s internet-speed recommendation for playback from an encoder bitrate recommendation for a broadcast. They describe different directions and uses, so they should not be treated as interchangeable numbers.

Netflix also lists 3 Mbps or higher for 720p and 15 Mbps or higher for 4K. These are Netflix-specific recommendations; actual playback quality can be affected by multiple factors.

Twitch explains that “When watching Twitch, your download speed determines video quality.” Its 1080p60 figure is not a universal threshold for every video service or frame rate.
Bandwidth for broadcasting live in 1080p
For a live broadcast, the relevant connection is the upload capacity available to the encoder. YouTube’s figures below are recommended outgoing stream bitrates, not the speed of an internet plan and not a promise that a connection will sustain the stream without interruption.

These are YouTube’s current encoder-setting recommendations. The codec and frame rate matter: YouTube lists different bitrates for H.264 and AV1/H.265, and 60 fps calls for a higher bitrate than 30 fps in each of these recommendations.
How to check whether your connection is suitable
- Decide which activity you mean. For playback, check download speed against the relevant service’s recommendation. For a live broadcast, check upload capacity against the bitrate you plan to send.
- Test the connection you will actually use. Run a speed test under typical conditions and, for broadcasting, focus on the upload result. YouTube advises: “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.”
- Account for competing traffic. Other devices and applications using the connection can affect the capacity available to playback or a broadcast. A single speed-test result does not establish how reliably the connection will perform at other times.
- Choose settings your connection and computer can sustain. Twitch notes that higher resolution requires higher bitrate and higher frame rates require more encoding power. Select settings with both the network and encoder hardware in mind.
The cited platform recommendations do not define a universal extra bandwidth margin. Judge the connection by its actual performance and stability rather than assuming that a particular plan speed guarantees a particular viewing or broadcast result.
