Use the wp_enqueue_scripts hook, remove WordPress’s registered jquery handle, register the file you intend to use under that same handle, and enqueue it. Keep the replacement front-end-only, preserve WordPress’s noConflict() behavior, and make every dependent script declare jquery as a dependency. If only one plugin needs an old API, updating that plugin or adding a migration layer is usually safer than replacing jQuery for the entire site.

Choose the least disruptive approach first
WordPress and its themes and plugins normally refer to jQuery through the shared handle jquery. That handle is the integration point: a script that lists jquery as a dependency receives whichever implementation is registered under that name. Changing the implementation therefore affects every front-end dependency, not just the code that motivated the change.

Replace the registered jquery handle |
Existing scripts continue requesting jquery, but they run against the replacement file. |
WordPress’s no-conflict arrangement still applies; use jQuery or a scoped $ alias. |
One site-wide front-end runtime must be checked whenever WordPress, themes, or plugins change. |
| Load a second copy in isolation | Each dependent script must be deliberately assigned to the intended copy; automatic dependency ordering is not enough. | Use jQuery.noConflict( true ) and store the returned copy in a unique variable. |
Two APIs, two sets of plugins, and two upgrade paths increase debugging and update work. |
| Update the dependent code or use a migration layer | Only the affected code changes; unrelated components keep WordPress’s bundled runtime. | Existing no-conflict rules remain unchanged. | Usually the smallest compatibility surface when a deprecated API is the real problem. |
WordPress documents wp_enqueue_script() as the recommended way to add JavaScript to generated pages. It also ignores changed parameters on an already registered handle until that handle is deregistered and registered again. That is why a replacement must explicitly perform all three operations: deregister, register, and enqueue.
Replace WordPress’s front-end jQuery handle
1. Put the code in a site-specific location
Add the snippet to a small site plugin or a child theme’s functions.php. A site plugin is generally easier to keep active when the theme changes; a child theme is appropriate when the script is inseparable from that theme. Do not edit a parent theme, because an update can erase the change.

2. Deregister, register, and enqueue in that order
<?php
add_action( 'wp_enqueue_scripts', function () {
if ( is_admin() ) {
return;
}
wp_deregister_script( 'jquery' );
wp_register_script(
'jquery',
get_stylesheet_directory_uri() . '/assets/vendor/jquery-custom.min.js',
array(),
'1.0.0',
array( 'in_footer' => true )
);
wp_enqueue_script( 'jquery' );
} );
The file path in this example points to a copy stored in the active child theme. Replace it with the supported file you have selected, and set the version argument to that file’s deliberate version string. The version is used for cache-busting, so changing it when the file changes helps browsers receive the new asset. The in_footer setting asks WordPress to place the script in the footer when the resulting dependency graph permits it.
The registration keeps the handle named jquery. That matters: changing the handle to a new name would leave existing plugins asking for the original handle and could cause duplicate loads or missing dependencies.

<?php
add_action( 'wp_enqueue_scripts', function () {
wp_enqueue_script(
'site-interactions',
get_stylesheet_directory_uri() . '/assets/js/site-interactions.js',
array( 'jquery' ),
'1.0.0',
array( 'in_footer' => true )
);
} );
Declaring array( 'jquery' ) tells WordPress to place site-interactions after the implementation registered under the shared handle. It also makes the relationship visible to other developers and to WordPress’s dependency resolver. A script that uses jQuery but omits the dependency may execute before jQuery, or may work only because of an accidental load order that changes later.
4. Do not try to change an already registered handle in place
Calling wp_register_script() with a new source while jquery is still registered does not reliably replace its existing parameters. Deregister first, then register the desired source, then enqueue it. If another callback re-registers the handle later, inspect hook priorities and make sure your replacement runs after the callback that would otherwise restore the original registration.
Write JavaScript for WordPress’s no-conflict mode
WordPress loads its bundled jQuery in noConflict() mode. The global dollar sign is therefore not assumed to belong to jQuery. Code that begins with $(...) can fail even when jQuery itself loaded correctly.

Use the full jQuery name
jQuery( function () {
jQuery( '.notice' ).addClass( 'is-ready' );
} );
Alias $ only inside a function
jQuery( function ( $ ) {
$( '.notice' ).addClass( 'is-ready' );
} );
The callback receives jQuery as its argument, so the dollar sign is local to that callback. An immediately invoked function expression is useful when a larger file needs the same pattern:
( function ( $ ) {
'use strict';
$( function () {
$( '.menu-toggle' ).on( 'click', function () {
$( '.site-menu' ).toggleClass( 'is-open' );
} );
} );
} )( jQuery );
Do not make $ global merely to accommodate one file. A theme or plugin may use another library that also claims that symbol, and global reassignment can create failures that appear unrelated to the jQuery replacement.
Load two jQuery versions only when isolation is unavoidable
jQuery’s API documents a two-version technique but labels it not recommended. It can be useful during a controlled transition when one legacy component cannot yet run on the version used by the rest of the site. The copies must be loaded in a known order, and every dependent script must receive the correct variable.
<script src="jquery-new.js"></script>
<script src="jquery-old.js"></script>
<script>
var oldJQuery = jQuery.noConflict( true );
// oldJQuery(...) uses the second copy.
// jQuery(...) remains the first copy.
</script>
After noConflict( true ), the second copy is returned through oldJQuery, while the first copy’s jQuery and $ bindings are restored. A legacy script that needs the second copy must be wrapped so it receives oldJQuery, for example:
( function ( legacy$ ) {
legacy$( function () {
legacy$( '.legacy-widget' ).legacyPlugin();
} );
} )( oldJQuery );
Loading two copies through WordPress’s normal dependency graph requires more bookkeeping than replacing one handle. A script that simply lists jquery cannot express “the old copy” versus “the new copy”; register separate handles or pass the isolated variable directly, and ensure the scripts are printed after the copy they use. Keep the isolated code narrowly scoped and remove it once the dependent component has been updated.

Keep the replacement on the front end
The wp_enqueue_scripts hook targets front-end pages. The administration area has its own enqueue process, and WordPress warns that deregistering front-end jQuery can silently break anything on the page that depends on it. Editors, media screens, plugin settings, and other admin interfaces should not be changed by a front-end compatibility fix.
If an administrative screen genuinely requires a different script, use admin_enqueue_scripts and restrict the change to the relevant screen. The callback receives a screen identifier, which lets you avoid changing every dashboard page:
<?php
add_action( 'admin_enqueue_scripts', function ( $hook_suffix ) {
if ( 'tools_page_example' !== $hook_suffix ) {
return;
}
// Enqueue only the scripts required by this administrative screen.
} );
Do not copy the front-end deregistration blindly into the administration hook. Admin code may depend on the version WordPress provides, and a global admin replacement can disrupt unrelated screens.
Confirm that replacement is actually necessary
When updating the dependent component is safer
- A plugin or theme uses a deprecated jQuery API but has a maintained release: update it instead of changing the runtime for every component.
- The problem appears in one custom file: adapt that file to current APIs or wrap it in a migration layer.
- The failing code is loaded only on one template: conditionally enqueue a compatibility script there rather than replacing jQuery site-wide.
When a handle replacement can be justified
- A controlled application requires a specific supported jQuery build and all front-end dependents have been audited against it.
- A legacy dependency cannot be upgraded immediately, and changing the shared runtime is less risky than maintaining two copies.
- You can test interactive features and have a rollback copy of the previous registration.
A migration layer can bridge deprecated APIs while the underlying code is updated. Treat it as temporary compatibility code, document which component needs it, and remove it after that component no longer relies on the old behavior.

No replacement should be considered complete merely because one page renders. Test logged-out and logged-in views, because plugins often enqueue different assets for each audience.

- Open the browser console on representative pages and confirm that the intended jQuery file is present once, with the expected version string or URL.
- Exercise navigation menus, mobile menus, sliders, modal dialogs, search controls, and any other interactive theme features.
- Submit front-end forms, including validation errors, successful submissions, uploads, and asynchronous responses.
- Check editor-facing features, media dialogs, and plugin settings in the administration area; the front-end replacement must not damage them.
- Test commerce flows if the site has them: product selection, cart updates, checkout fields, account screens, and payment-interface handoffs.
- Inspect the network panel for 404 responses, duplicate jQuery files, blocked assets, and scripts that execute before their dependencies.
- Temporarily disable caches and optimization tools while diagnosing order problems, then retest with production caching enabled.
- Repeat the checks after updating WordPress, the active theme, or a plugin that declares jQuery as a dependency.
Keep a rollback procedure: restore the previous registration and remove the replacement file or callback. A small site-plugin change is easier to revert than edits scattered through several templates.

“$ is not a function” or “$ is not defined”
The file is probably using the dollar sign outside a no-conflict wrapper, or it executes before jQuery. Rewrite the file with jQuery( function ( $ ) { ... } ) or an IIFE and verify that its enqueue declaration includes jquery.
A plugin works on one page but not another
Compare the enqueue conditions and hook order. The plugin may load jQuery only on selected templates, or an optimization layer may combine files differently. Make the dependency explicit and inspect the final page source and network requests on both pages.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe replacement source never appears
Another callback may have re-registered jquery after your code ran, or the page may be using a cached generated asset. Check the final script URL, adjust the callback priority only when necessary, and clear the relevant page and browser caches.
Several copies appear in the network panel
A plugin may be printing a hard-coded script tag, or a second-version experiment may be active alongside the shared handle. Remove direct script tags where possible and decide explicitly which component owns each copy. Two versions should not be an accidental side effect of changing the shared handle.
Best Value
The dashboard breaks after a front-end change
Separate the scopes. The replacement belongs on wp_enqueue_scripts; remove any broad deregistration from an admin callback. If an admin screen has a genuine requirement, limit its enqueue logic to that screen’s hook suffix.
Versioning, loading, and update discipline
Use a deliberate version argument when registering the file. It gives browsers and caching layers a change signal, but it is not a substitute for compatibility testing. Keep the jQuery version, the source location, and the reason for the replacement in site documentation so a future maintainer can reassess it during WordPress and plugin updates.
WordPress’s registration and enqueue arguments also support loading strategies. Choose footer placement or another strategy only after checking the dependency graph; an aggressive loading attribute can change execution timing for code that expects a synchronous dependency. The safest setting is the one that preserves the order required by the scripts you have audited.
Review the replacement whenever WordPress core, the active theme, or a jQuery-dependent plugin updates. A runtime swap is an integration decision, not a one-time cosmetic change. Keep the custom file from an identifiable, supported source, monitor its integrity and availability, and remove the override when the original compatibility requirement disappears.
A compact implementation checklist
- Identify the exact plugin, theme, or custom API that requires another jQuery behavior.
- Try an update or migration layer before changing the shared runtime.
- Use
wp_enqueue_scriptsfor front-end code and leave admin handles alone. - Deregister
jquery, register the selected file underjquery, and enqueue it. - Give every custom jQuery script an explicit
jquerydependency. - Use
jQueryor a function-scoped$; never assume a global dollar sign. - Avoid two copies unless isolation is unavoidable; if used, assign the second copy a unique variable with
noConflict( true ). - Pin a meaningful version string, test interactive and administrative workflows, and keep a rollback path.
The practical default is therefore a single, deliberately registered front-end implementation under WordPress’s existing jquery handle. Isolate a second version only as a temporary, explicitly managed compatibility measure.
