What Cracker’s Wither Storm adds
The mod recreates the Wither Storm from Minecraft: Story Mode as a survival challenge. The stated design is for players to run, hide, gear up, and eventually defeat the storm rather than simply fight an ordinary Minecraft boss. The project lists multiplayer compatibility, boss battles, the Formidibomb, configurable settings, new tools and weapons, and Wither Sickness.

That makes world choice, backups, and server performance part of the gameplay setup rather than optional administration details. A save that contains valuable builds should not be your first test environment.

The compatibility listing covers Minecraft Java Edition on both client and server. Supported combinations are not interchangeable: choose one Minecraft version, install its corresponding loader, and use a mod build and dependency set made for that exact combination.

A 1.20.1 mod file cannot be treated as a drop-in replacement for a 1.19.4 or 1.16.5 installation. The same rule applies to Forge versus NeoForge. On a multiplayer server, the clients and server should use the same Minecraft version, loader family, mod version, and server-side dependencies.

Cracker’s Wither Storm Performance
The performance-oriented option is a Forge 1.20.1 modpack for both client and server. Its description presents it as optimized and ready for shaders during the boss fight. Selecting it reduces version ambiguity, but it does not make the storm inexpensive to simulate: the underlying boss remains an unusually large, mechanically complex entity.

Before installing: make a safe test plan
- Use Minecraft Java Edition. The compatibility listing does not describe a Bedrock Edition release.
- Pick one supported version and loader. Record the exact Minecraft version, Forge or NeoForge choice, mod version, and dependencies before installing.
- Create a new world. The project warns that summoning the storm in an existing valuable world can permanently damage it.
- Back up the world directory. Keep a copy outside the active save location before the first summon and before major configuration changes.
- Plan for both client and server load. A fast graphics card does not remove server simulation work, and a powerful server does not guarantee smooth client rendering.
- Start with a minimal test profile. Other mods, visual effects, render distance, shaders, CPU/GPU capability, memory allocation, player count, and storm phase all affect the result.
No authoritative source for this project publishes a universal minimum RAM amount, CPU model, player limit, FPS target, or TPS target. Treat any such number presented as a guarantee with caution.
Install the mod on a client
- Choose the release. On the mod’s distribution page, select the Minecraft version you intend to play and confirm whether the file is for Forge or NeoForge. Do not mix a loader-specific file with the other loader.
- Install the matching loader profile. Launch the Minecraft launcher with the selected Forge or NeoForge profile once so the instance directory is created.
- Install every required dependency. Use the dependency list for that exact release and version. A client that has the main jar but is missing a required dependency may fail during startup or stop at the loading screen.
- Place the files in the correct instance. Put the mod jar and its compatible dependencies in the
modsfolder belonging to the profile you will actually launch. Multiple Minecraft instances can have different folders, so verify the path rather than assuming the default profile is active. - Launch once without joining a long-running world. Confirm that the title screen appears and that the expected Forge or NeoForge profile is loaded. Fix version or dependency errors before creating a serious save.
- Create the disposable test world. Use this world to verify that the boss, items, settings, and progression load correctly before inviting other players.
If the game reaches the title screen but the storm is invisible or does not evolve, use the OptiFine check in the troubleshooting section before replacing files at random.
Run it on a dedicated server
Server installation sequence
- Build the server around the same target as the clients. Install the corresponding Forge or NeoForge server loader for the exact Minecraft version selected for the clients. For the performance pack, that target is Forge 1.20.1.
- Copy the mod and dependencies. Put the server-compatible mod file and every required server-side dependency in the server’s
modsdirectory. A client-only visual add-on should not be assumed to satisfy a server dependency. - Start the server with no valuable world loaded. Let it generate a new test world, then connect with a client that has the identical version, loader, mod, and dependency set.
- Check the connection before summoning. Have players move around, open inventories, and perform ordinary actions. This separates a basic installation problem from the storm’s later simulation load.
- Back up before the first summon. Keep a restorable copy of the world and server configuration. The storm can permanently alter terrain and structures.
- Move to the real multiplayer world only after the test succeeds. Preserve the same version matrix and copy configuration changes deliberately rather than replacing files from an unrelated installation.
Where the server settings live
Configuration is per world. In single-player, use the mod’s world-options menu. On a dedicated server, edit:

serverconfig/witherstormmod-server.tomlThe file belongs to the active world, so changing a similarly named file in another world directory will not affect the save you are playing. Make a backup of the TOML file before editing it, keep the syntax intact, and reload the world after a setting change.
Make the storm evolve faster
The documented control is evolutionAttributeModifier. Values below 1 accelerate evolution, and 0.1 is the fastest value allowed by the documented setting.
- Stop or leave the world you intend to modify.
- Open the world’s
serverconfig/witherstormmod-server.tomlon a dedicated server, or open the mod’s world-options menu in single-player. - Find
evolutionAttributeModifierand set it to a value below1. Use0.1when you specifically want the fastest permitted evolution. - Save the setting without changing the surrounding TOML structure.
- Reload the world before judging the result. The FAQ for the project states that the change does not apply until the world is reloaded.
Faster evolution is a difficulty and load decision, not a performance fix. Advancing phases more quickly can bring the most demanding entity behavior sooner, leaving less time to gear up and less time for the server to recover between events. Test the value on a disposable save first.

Why the Wither Storm causes lag
The project’s performance documentation gives the central reason: Minecraft is not designed for very large entities, and the storm’s complex mechanics can create large amounts of lag. The effect has two different faces:
- Client FPS problems: rendering the storm, its effects, terrain changes, and shaders can reduce visual smoothness.
- Server TPS problems: simulating the storm, world changes, collision work, and multiplayer state can delay game ticks for everyone, even if one player’s graphics settings are low.
There is no controlled benchmark that supports a universal FPS or TPS promise. Results vary with Minecraft version, other mods, render distance, shaders, CPU, GPU, memory allocation, number of players, and the storm’s phase. A value that works in a small Forge 1.20.1 test may not hold in a heavily modded 1.19.4 world with several players.

The storm is invisible or stops evolving with OptiFine
- Open Video Settings.
- Open Performance.
- Disable Smooth World.
- Return to the world and test again.
The project specifically calls out Smooth World as a setting to disable when OptiFine is installed and the storm is not visible or fails to evolve. If that does not resolve the issue, reproduce it in the minimal supported profile to distinguish a graphics conflict from a mod or version mismatch.
Client FPS collapses during a phase
- Temporarily disable shaders and compare the same scene without them.
- Lower render distance and other visual settings that increase the amount of terrain and effects drawn.
- Test with fewer additional visual or gameplay mods.
- Check whether the slowdown appears only near the storm or throughout the world; a localized drop points toward the storm’s rendering and effects, while global slowdown may involve the broader mod set or allocated resources.
These steps reduce variables; they are not a guaranteed FPS target because the project publishes no universal benchmark.
Players experience delayed actions or rubber-banding
- Check the dedicated server first. Lower client graphics settings cannot repair server-side tick delays.
- Test with fewer players and fewer unrelated server mods to isolate simulation load.
- Use a fresh world and compare an early phase with a later phase. The project’s performance wiki identifies later phases as the point where server load can become especially significant.
- In the server configuration, consider enabling Squash Hitboxes. The performance documentation says it can help TPS lag in higher phases, but also warns that the option may have drawbacks. Test it on a backup, verify gameplay behavior, and keep the change only if it improves your particular setup.
The server crashes or fails to load after an edit
- Restore the backed-up TOML file and confirm that only the intended value was changed.
- Verify that the file is under the active world’s
serverconfigdirectory. - Recheck the Minecraft version, loader, mod build, and dependencies on both sides.
- Reproduce the issue without unrelated mods before concluding that the storm itself is responsible.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Self-hosted Forge server
Self-hosting gives the administrator direct access to the world directory, serverconfig/witherstormmod-server.toml, backups, and loader files. It is useful when you can maintain the machine, monitor resource use, and troubleshoot version mismatches yourself. The trade-off is that you are responsible for uptime, network access, storage, backups, and all updates.
Managed host
A managed provider can simplify server deployment and may offer a one-click option for the Cracker’s Wither Storm Performance pack. PlayNHost currently advertises such an option. Availability and suitability still depend on the provider’s region, allocated RAM and CPU, backup controls, pricing, current mod-version support, and terms. Confirm those details before paying; a one-click installer does not remove the need to match client versions or protect the world.

A practical multiplayer launch checklist
- All players use Minecraft Java Edition on the same version.
- Every client and the server use the same Forge or NeoForge family required by the selected release.
- The mod file and every dependency match exactly.
- The performance pack is treated as Forge 1.20.1, not as a generic loader-independent pack.
- A new world or verified backup exists before the first summon.
- Players agree on whether evolution speed will remain at the default or use a value below

Expect load to rise as the unusually large entity and its mechanics evolve. For troubleshooting, disable OptiFine’s Smooth World when the storm is invisible or fails to evolve, and test Squash Hitboxes for later-phase TPS problems with its possible drawbacks in mind. Evolution speed is controlled per world through evolutionAttributeModifier, where values below 1 accelerate progression and 0.1 is the fastest documented value; reload the world after changing it.
