How to Livestream an Interview on YouTube

Choose a webcam for a simple setup, Go live together for a mobile one-guest interview, or an encoder for more production control. Then schedule and test before broadcasting.

To livestream an interview on YouTube, first enable livestreaming on your channel, then choose the setup that fits the conversation: YouTube Studio’s webcam option for a simple host setup, Go live together for a quick mobile interview with one guest, or an encoder for a controlled landscape production with more cameras or overlays. Schedule the event, test both speakers’ audio and video, and check the YouTube preview before going live.

Before you choose a setup, check channel eligibility

YouTube’s current guidance says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Livestreamers must be at least 16 years old. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so confirm access well before interview day. If you plan to use Go live together, also check that the creator is eligible for that feature; YouTube describes it as available to eligible creators but does not state a universal checklist on its feature page. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance has the current requirements.

Setup Where it starts Guest and production options Best fit Main trade-off
Computer webcam YouTube Studio in a computer browser Select a webcam and microphone; the webcam help page does not establish a native remote-guest workflow. A simple host-led interview or a basic setup. Fewer production controls; use a supported production method if you need to combine a remote guest.
Go live together Phone; you can schedule the event on desktop and start it on mobile. Invite a guest with a link and bring them in from a waiting room. Only one guest appears at a time, and the default layout is vertical. A quick mobile co-stream with one guest. Mobile-first workflow and layout limits; the guest’s connection also needs checking.
Encoder Computer software or hardware connected to YouTube’s Live Control Room. Can connect external audio/video hardware and support a more involved production. The exact remote-guest method depends on the software you choose. A controlled landscape interview, multiple cameras, screen sharing, or overlays. More setup and testing; encoder settings must suit your connection.

The encoder is a practical choice for a conventional landscape interview with more production control. That recommendation follows from the documented format limits of Go live together and YouTube’s encoder guidance; YouTube does not rank these options for you. You do not need expensive gear to begin: YouTube says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.”

Set up a computer webcam interview

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live → Webcam.
  2. Enter the event details and choose the privacy setting deliberately.
  3. Select the webcam and microphone you intend to use. Check that the correct devices are selected rather than assuming the browser has chosen them.
  4. Preview the picture and sound, then select Go live when you are ready.

This route uses YouTube Studio without separate encoding software. The webcam workflow is suited to a simple setup; if you need to combine a remote guest into the picture, choose a production method that supports that workflow.

Invite a guest with Go live together

  1. On your phone, create or edit a mobile live and enable Go live together. You can schedule the stream on desktop if needed, but the live starts from a phone.
  2. Enter the event details, then copy and send the invitation link to your guest.
  3. Ask the guest to open the link and join the waiting room. Bring them into the live when both of you are ready.
  4. Before starting, check both participants’ sound and picture. The feature shows one guest at a time and defaults to vertical orientation.

You can view the host’s analytics in Studio; guest analytics are not available there. If your interview needs several guests on screen at once or a conventional landscape layout, use an encoder-based production instead.

Set up an encoder interview

  1. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create a stream and set its event details.
  2. Copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: share it only with the production system that needs it, and reset it if it is compromised.
  3. Connect your camera, microphone, and any other production equipment to the encoder. Configure the video and audio settings to match your equipment and available upload bandwidth.
  4. Start the encoder and wait for the Live Control Room preview to appear. Check the picture and sound there before selecting Go live.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, when your encoder supports it. The available settings and the way you add a remote guest vary by encoder, so follow its instructions for guest audio/video and verify the result in YouTube’s preview.

Schedule the interview and prepare the guest

  1. In Live Control Room, open Manage → Schedule stream. Choose new settings or reuse appropriate prior settings, then enter the event details.
  2. Check the privacy setting rather than assuming a default. YouTube notes that privacy defaults differ for users aged 13–17 and those 18 or older.
  3. Share the scheduled watch-page link with the guest and audience. Viewers may be able to find the upcoming event and select Notify me.
  4. Send the guest a separate run-of-show with the start time and time zone, how to join, device orientation, microphone or headphone expectations, interview order, and a backup way to contact you.

For an encoder production, YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours before the event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. That gives you time to check the preview and address setup problems before viewers arrive.

Test audio, video, and internet before going live

  • Rehearse the real conditions: test with speech and movement similar to the interview. Confirm each speaker is audible, framed correctly, and using the intended microphone and camera.
  • Check for echo: have both speakers listen and speak during the test. Headphones can be used for monitoring, but they do not guarantee that every echo problem is eliminated.
  • Measure upload capacity: use an upload-speed test, not download speed alone. YouTube advises keeping the combined outgoing bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving about 20% headroom. If you use a backup encoder, include its bitrate when calculating the total.
  • Check the YouTube preview: confirm that the stream reaches Live Control Room and that its picture and sound look right before going live.
  • Prepare a backup: agree on a backup contact method with the guest. If you have configured backup-encoder failover, test it before the event.

Keep Live Control Room visible during the interview, or use its compact Live Control Panel where available. Monitor sound, picture, stream health, and chat while the event is live.
