YouTube does not treat a video file as a webcam input by itself: you need encoder software on a computer, or a documented standalone option such as the AJA HELO Plus, whose PlayToStream feature can schedule prerecorded media without a computer.
Choose a way to send the video to YouTube Live
| Approach | How it works | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Computer encoder software | Software sends the prerecorded video as its video source and connects to YouTube using the stream URL and key. | Flexible and does not require dedicated streaming hardware, but the computer and playback workflow must be set up for the selected encoder. Check its current documentation for file playback, scheduling, looping, and unattended operation. |
| AJA HELO Plus | YouTube’s encoder directory describes its PlayToStream feature as scheduling prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. | A specialized hardware route. It is not required for the standard computer-encoder workflow. |
YouTube’s general encoder instructions explain how to connect an encoder, but do not provide a universal set of steps for loading a file in every software product. The exact file-source controls depend on the encoder you choose.

Check channel eligibility before scheduling
- Your channel must be verified and must not have a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days.
- YouTube’s current guidance says streamers must be at least 16 years old.
- First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. Enable it before the day you plan to broadcast.
These are YouTube’s service requirements and readiness timings, not guarantees that a particular channel will be approved or ready by a specific moment. Check your channel status in YouTube Studio.
Set up the YouTube Live stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live to open Live Control Room.
- Create a stream for now or schedule one for later. Scheduling can create an upcoming listing that viewers can visit and let them opt into a reminder.
- Set visibility to public, private, or unlisted according to who should be able to watch. Review any other stream settings, including monetization controls, before you go live.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.

Configure playback and connect the encoder
- Choose an encoder that can use your video file as a playback source. Before relying on it, confirm in that encoder’s current documentation that it supports the format and the workflow you need, such as scheduling or looping.
- In the encoder’s streaming settings, enter the YouTube stream URL and key. The labels and file-loading controls vary by encoder, so follow the product’s current instructions rather than assuming one interface applies to all software.
- Set up the file’s audio and video playback, then send the feed to YouTube. For the AJA HELO Plus route, use its PlayToStream prerecorded-media scheduling feature as documented for the device.
- Start the encoder feed early enough for YouTube to receive it. In Live Control Room, check the incoming preview, confirm the stream is accessible to the intended audience, and monitor audio and video during the broadcast.
YouTube recommends configuring an encoder stream at least two hours before the event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before it. That gives you time to spot a missing feed or other setup problem before the scheduled start.

When the broadcast is finished, stop sending the encoder feed and end the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Check the resulting video and its visibility in YouTube Studio.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- You cannot start a live stream: Check that the channel is verified, has no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days, and has completed first-time live activation. Activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Live Control Room has no incoming preview: Confirm the encoder is sending, and that its stream URL and key match the stream you opened in YouTube Studio. If you reset a compromised key, replace the old key in the encoder.
- The stream is scheduled but viewers cannot find it: Check the stream’s visibility and scheduled listing in Live Control Room. A private stream is not publicly discoverable; an unlisted stream requires its link.
- There is no video or audio: Confirm the selected file is actually being used as the encoder’s playback source and that the file’s audio and video are reaching the encoder output. Consult the selected encoder’s documentation for product-specific controls.
- The stream is restricted or interrupted over rights concerns: Review the video, music, images, and other material in the feed for rights issues, and check YouTube Studio for notices. Prerecording does not remove licensing obligations.
