To live stream from your phone, open the YouTube app, tap Create → Live, set up the stream, then tap Go live. Your channel must meet YouTube’s mobile-live eligibility rules: at least 50 subscribers, verification, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
Check that your channel and phone are eligible
- Subscribers: Your channel needs at least 50 subscribers for mobile live streaming.
- Channel status: Verify the channel and make sure it has had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
- Enable live streaming: If this is your first time, activation may take up to 24 hours. Don’t wait until the moment you intend to broadcast to enable it.
- Age: YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance says creators must be at least 16 years old.
- Device: YouTube lists Android 8.0 or later and iOS 8 or later as the minimum operating systems for mobile streaming.
These are YouTube Help’s currently listed requirements; its help pages do not show publication dates, so check the official mobile live-streaming eligibility guidance if a control or requirement has changed.

Start a live stream in the YouTube app
- Open the YouTube app on your phone or tablet and sign in to the eligible channel.
- Tap Create, then Live.
- Tap Edit and enter the stream details, such as its title and visibility. Review the audience setting, live chat, age restriction, monetization, and any other options shown for your account.
- Choose whether to start now or schedule the stream for later.
- When you are ready, tap Go live.
- To stop, tap Finish. YouTube creates an archive of the stream; you can later change its privacy or delete it.
For a scheduled stream, return to Create → Live, tap the calendar, select the scheduled stream, then tap Go live. YouTube says a private practice mode is rolling out to creators; look for it in your app, but don’t assume it is available on every account.
Choose the stream orientation before you begin
Vertical
Vertical video gives phone viewers a full-screen experience and may be discovered in YouTube’s Shorts feed. It can suit a phone-first vlog or a quick update, but some live features are not available in YouTube’s vertical live feed.
#1 Best Overall

Horizontal
Horizontal streams support features that YouTube’s comparison lists as unavailable in the vertical live feed, including clickable links in chat or the channel description and live ad pre-rolls and midrolls. Memberships are listed for both orientations. Choose horizontal if those links or ad features matter to your stream.
YouTube describes dual-format streaming as a Live Control Room/Studio setup, not something the basic in-app mobile workflow automatically creates. In the documented Live Control Room workflow, vertical format cannot be added after a stream has started. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and format comparison before choosing a format.

Check privacy and audience settings carefully
Inspect the visibility and audience settings before going live rather than relying on defaults. YouTube says the default mobile privacy setting is unlisted for users aged 13–17 and public for users aged 18 or older, and creators can change it. Its general live-streaming guidance sets the minimum creator age at 16.
Channels with more than 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers may have a mobile-stream audience limit. Their archived streams are private by default. YouTube says limits may take several weeks to change after reaching 1,000 subscribers; it does not promise a fixed removal date. Mobile access is lost if a channel falls below 50 subscribers.

What you need—and what is optional
Your eligible phone and the YouTube app are the core setup. YouTube says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do,” and recommends trying a test live stream to get comfortable with the process.
- Optional phone tripod or holder: Useful for hands-free, stationary filming. Check that its clamp fits your phone.
- Optional external microphone: Consider one if you need different audio capture; confirm that it works with your phone’s connector or adapter.
Neither accessory is listed as an eligibility requirement. YouTube’s mobile guidance does not specify a required upload speed, battery capacity, or mobile-data allowance, so plan those around your device, connection, stream length, and data plan rather than treating an unsupported number as a platform rule.

When another YouTube streaming method may fit better
YouTube presents mobile streaming as suited to vlogging and quick updates. A webcam is another quick computer-based option; an encoder is intended for more production control, such as gameplay, overlays, or connecting equipment like microphones and cameras. Those paths involve a different setup from the direct phone-app workflow. YouTube’s live-streaming overview explains the available approaches.

The Live option is missing or you cannot start

The stream has fewer viewers than expected
If your channel has more than 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers, YouTube may be limiting the mobile stream’s audience. The limit may take several weeks to be removed after the channel reaches 1,000 subscribers.
The archive is private when you expected it to be public
Check the archive’s privacy setting. Mobile streams from channels in the more-than-50-but-fewer-than-1,000-subscriber band are private by default, and YouTube’s age-based default settings also differ. You can change an archive’s privacy after the broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
The phone-app method is for broadcasting live from your phone. If instead you want uploaded videos to keep a YouTube channel live 24/7, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
