How to Live Stream on YouTube from an iPhone

Use YouTube’s iPhone app to start a live stream, provided your channel meets YouTube’s eligibility rules. Here are the setup steps, privacy choices, and common fixes.

To live stream from an iPhone, open the YouTube app, tap Create > Live, set up your stream, and tap Go live. Your channel must meet YouTube’s mobile-live requirements: at least 50 subscribers, verification, live streaming enabled, no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and an iPhone running iOS 8 or later. YouTube also requires creators to be at least 16 years old to live stream.

Check whether your channel can stream from an iPhone

YouTube Help lists these requirements for mobile live streaming:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Your channel has at least 50 subscribers.
  • Your channel is verified.
  • Live streaming is turned on for the channel.
  • Your channel has had no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days.
  • Your iPhone runs iOS 8 or later.

YouTube’s general live-stream rules set the minimum creator age at 16. This is a platform rule, separate from the iPhone’s operating-system requirement. YouTube Help says the first stream may take up to 24 hours to become available after you enable live streaming; that is an initial activation delay, not a required wait before every broadcast.

Enable live streaming and allow time for activation

If the Live option is unavailable, check channel verification, restrictions, subscriber count, and whether live streaming has been enabled. If you have only just enabled it, wait for activation—YouTube says availability can take up to 24 hours.

Know what the subscriber threshold does—and does not—mean

Reaching 50 subscribers makes a channel eligible to use mobile live streaming if it meets the other requirements, but it does not guarantee an unrestricted audience. YouTube may limit the audience for mobile streams from channels with more than 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers, and may set the stream archive to private by default. After a channel reaches 1,000 subscribers, removing the audience limitation may take several weeks. YouTube says a channel does not lose mobile-live access unless it falls below 50 subscribers.

How to live stream on YouTube from your iPhone

  1. Open the YouTube app on your iPhone and sign in to the channel you intend to stream from.
  2. Tap Create at the bottom of the screen, then tap Live.
  3. Tap Edit to enter your stream details. Set the title and choose the stream’s visibility and audience.
  4. Choose Schedule for later if you want to schedule the broadcast, or select Screencast if you want to broadcast your screen. These options are available in the mobile setup flow.
  5. Review the details, then tap Go live to begin broadcasting.
  6. When you are done, tap Finish. YouTube shows a recap with stream statistics and creates an archive on your channel. You can change the archive’s privacy setting or delete it.

Choose privacy deliberately

You can set a stream to public, private, or unlisted. YouTube’s mobile-stream defaults differ by age: creators aged 13–17 have an unlisted default, while creators 18 or older have a public default. Check the visibility setting before tapping Go live, particularly if you do not want the broadcast publicly discoverable.

What to use for the broadcast

The direct iPhone workflow does not list a separate accessory as a requirement. YouTube’s live-streaming tips put it simply: “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” A steady place to set the phone and clear audio can be useful, but an external microphone, tripod, or power bank is not a documented prerequisite for starting a mobile stream.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube describes mobile streaming as suited to vlogging and quick updates. If your production needs gameplay capture, overlays, preamps, or cameras, YouTube’s encoder workflow is intended for more involved setups; it is a different method from going live directly in the iPhone app.

Vertical video and other formats

YouTube says vertical live streams can appear in the Shorts feed. Its Live Control Room information also describes controls for simultaneous horizontal and vertical output. Those platform features should not be taken to mean that every dual-format layout control is available in the iPhone app’s direct mobile setup.

Why can’t I go live from my phone?

  • The Live option is missing: Confirm you are signed into the intended channel, that it is verified, and that it has at least 50 subscribers. Check that live streaming is enabled.
  • You enabled live streaming recently: YouTube says the first stream can take up to 24 hours to become available after activation.
  • The channel has a restriction: A live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days makes the channel ineligible under YouTube’s mobile requirements.
  • The channel is below the subscriber threshold: Mobile live streaming requires at least 50 subscribers.
  • The creator is under 16: YouTube’s general live-stream rule sets 16 as the minimum age.
  • The stream has a smaller audience than expected: Channels below 1,000 subscribers may have mobile-stream audience limits. Check the visibility setting as well; it may be unlisted by default for creators aged 13–17.
  • The archive is private: YouTube may set mobile-stream archives private by default for channels with more than 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers. Review the archive’s privacy setting after the broadcast.
