How to Live Stream on Facebook and YouTube at the Same Time

Send one live production to Facebook and YouTube with a hosted relay or direct multi-output encoder. Here’s how to prepare accounts, configure OBS, test both destinations, and troubleshoot common problems.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To show one live production on Facebook and YouTube at the same time, the simplest route is usually a hosted multistreaming relay: connect both destinations to the service, then send one video feed from OBS or another encoder to the relay. It forwards the feed to both platforms. You can also use an encoder configured to send separate outputs directly, but that requires destination-specific setup and more upload capacity.

Before scheduling an event, make sure YouTube live streaming is enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until the day of the broadcast.

Choose how to send the stream to both platforms

Method How it works Best suited to What to check
Hosted relay service Connect Facebook and YouTube to the service, then send one feed from OBS or use the service’s browser-based studio. The service forwards the stream to each destination. Creators who want one encoder connection and a guided setup. Current destination support, supported account types, plan limits, branding, latency, account permissions, reliability, and whether the service starts each event automatically.
Direct multi-output encoder Configure an encoder to send a separate output to each platform’s ingest endpoint. Operators whose existing production setup supports multiple outputs and who are comfortable configuring each destination. Encoder capability, combined upload bandwidth, destination-specific settings, separate event controls, and what happens if one output fails.

A relay generally means your connection sends one feed upstream; the relay handles distribution. With direct outputs, your setup sends a feed to each destination, so the outgoing bandwidth requirement is higher. There is no single upload-speed figure that fits every resolution, bitrate, relay, and direct-output configuration: test your actual setup with spare capacity.

Prepare both accounts and the event

  • YouTube: Verify the channel and enable live streaming in YouTube Studio. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
  • Facebook: Confirm you can access the account and the intended destination—profile, Page, or Group—and that the chosen service supports it. Available destinations depend on the service’s current features and your account permissions.
  • Credentials: Be ready to use the stream URL and key required by your chosen workflow. Keep all stream keys private; anyone who obtains a key may be able to send a feed to that stream.
  • Event details: Prepare the title, description, privacy or audience choice, and start time for each destination. Check whether the integration carries details across or requires you to set them separately.

Set up OBS with a hosted relay

  1. Enable YouTube live streaming and check Facebook access. Complete the account checks above before the event, allowing up to 24 hours for first-time YouTube live-stream enablement.
  2. Connect both destinations in the relay. Sign in to the relay service, connect Facebook and YouTube, and approve the requested permissions. Select the right Facebook profile, Page, or Group and the intended YouTube channel or event where those options are available.
  3. Create an encoder or RTMP stream in the relay. Copy the stream key supplied by the relay. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose the relay as the service if it appears in the service list, and enter the relay-provided key. If the service gives you a server URL as well, use the URL and key exactly as supplied.
  4. Check the outgoing destinations. In the relay dashboard, make sure both Facebook and YouTube are enabled for this broadcast. Enter or review the title, description, and other event settings required for each destination.
  5. Start OBS and verify the platform states. Start streaming in OBS, then check the relay dashboard and each platform’s preview or live controls. Depending on the integration, you may need to start or confirm the broadcast separately at one or both destinations.
  6. Rehearse before the real event. If your workflow permits a private or unlisted test, confirm picture, audio, destination previews, and your plan for managing chat. Also check how to end the broadcast and whether doing so closes both destinations as expected.

In Restream’s documented workflow, users connect destinations, select the Restream service in OBS, enter the supplied key, and start the OBS stream. Restream says its free plan supports two simultaneous channels and Facebook profile streaming, while Pages and Groups require its Standard plan. Those are vendor-published plan and eligibility claims that may change; confirm current terms and destination support before relying on them.

Set up a direct multi-output encoder

A direct setup sends to each platform’s current ingest endpoint instead of sending one feed to a relay. The exact controls depend on your encoder and the platforms’ current event setup. YouTube’s workflow is to obtain the stream URL and key in YouTube Studio, enter them in the encoder, start sending the feed, and use Live Control Room controls where required. For Facebook, follow the current Live Producer instructions for the account and destination you intend to use; the exact menu labels, key behavior, and start sequence can vary.

  1. Create or select an event at each destination. Confirm the intended YouTube and Facebook channel or profile/Page/Group, audience settings, and event details.
  2. Retrieve each platform’s ingest details. Copy the relevant server URL and stream key from the platform’s current live setup. Do not use the relay’s key for a direct-output configuration.
  3. Configure a separate output for each platform. Enter each destination’s own URL and key in the encoder’s multi-output settings. Apply the destination’s current requirements rather than assuming identical settings work everywhere.
  4. Budget for both feeds. Your connection and encoder must sustain the combined outgoing rates. Run a test and check stability at each destination.
  5. Start and monitor each event. Follow the encoder and platform controls for starting, previewing, and ending each output. A failure on one output may not stop the other, so monitor both independently.

The precise direct Facebook-plus-YouTube setup is not universal: it depends on the encoder, account type, and current platform controls. Confirm the current instructions in the encoder and Facebook Live Producer before the broadcast rather than assuming a particular menu path or stream-key behavior.

Encoder settings and network planning

YouTube’s surfaced encoder guidance recommends H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS for encrypted delivery to Google’s servers. YouTube says the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. These are YouTube recommendations, not a claim that every Facebook workflow has identical requirements. Check the relay’s current outgoing settings and each destination’s guidance before applying them.

  • Upload bandwidth: With a relay, your encoder sends one feed to the relay. With direct multi-output streaming, plan for the combined outgoing rates. No universal Mbps threshold is established for every setup; test the bitrate, resolution, and connection you will actually use.
  • Stability: A connection that briefly reaches a target upload rate may still be unreliable under sustained load. Test for the duration and conditions closest to the event, and leave capacity beyond the encoder’s configured output.
  • Audio and video: Check synchronization, microphone levels, and the picture at both destination previews. An encoder can use external audio and video hardware, but additional equipment is optional rather than a requirement for simulcasting.

Test, copyright, and live-content checks

Do a rehearsal early enough to fix account, permission, and connectivity problems. Verify that both platforms receive the intended picture and sound, that titles and audience settings are right, and that you know which controls stop each broadcast. Decide in advance how you will monitor comments if you plan to use chat on both platforms.

Make sure you have the rights to the video, music, and other material in the broadcast. Simulcasting does not bypass either platform’s copyright rules. YouTube’s monetization and reused-content policies are also separate from the technical ability to go live: permission to use material does not by itself guarantee that a channel qualifies for monetization. Review the platforms’ current policies for your content and account before streaming.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to do
YouTube does not offer a live-stream destination or will not accept the event. Live streaming is not enabled, the channel is not verified, or first-time enablement is still processing. Check YouTube Studio’s live controls and channel status well before the event; first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
Only one platform appears in the relay or one destination cannot be selected. The account permission was not granted, the account type is unsupported on the current plan, or the service’s destination support has changed. Reconnect the account, review permissions and plan eligibility, and confirm current support for the exact profile, Page, Group, channel, or event.
The encoder connects, but a destination stays offline. The destination is not enabled in the relay, the platform needs a separate start confirmation, or direct-output credentials/settings are incorrect. Check the destination toggle and platform preview/live controls. For direct outputs, verify that each destination has its own current URL, key, and event setup.
The picture stutters or the connection drops. Insufficient or unstable upload capacity, especially when sending direct feeds to multiple destinations. Test the actual configured output, lower the outgoing load if needed, and reserve headroom. For direct outputs, account for the combined rates.
The stream works on one destination but not the other. Different platform requirements, permissions, event settings, or output failures. Monitor each destination separately and inspect its own preview and status rather than treating one successful output as proof that both are live.
A stream key may have been exposed. The key was shared, published, or entered into an untrusted service. Use the platform’s current controls to replace or reset the affected key, then update the encoder or relay before going live.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a prerecorded YouTube channel that runs continuously, rather than one live production sent to Facebook and YouTube together, StreamNeo is a separate YouTube-only option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. It does not stream to Facebook or go live from a camera.
