How to Live Stream an IP Camera With Wowza Streaming Engine

Connect a model-specific IP camera RTSP feed to Wowza Streaming Engine, verify playback, and address common source, authentication, codec, and network issues.

To stream an IP camera through Wowza Streaming Engine, create a live application, enable the playback formats your viewers need, add the camera’s model-specific RTSP URI as a Stream File, and connect it using MediaCaster Type rtp. Verify the source and the resulting playback separately: a camera’s RTSP address is not universal, and a valid camera feed does not by itself guarantee that every player can play the output.

How do I stream an IP camera to Wowza?

The documented workflow below is for Wowza Streaming Engine, where you manage a live application and ingest the camera’s RTSP/RTP feed. Exact menu placement may vary by Engine version, but the relevant Engine Manager terms are Live Applications, Stream Files, Incoming Streams, and Test Playback.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Create a live application. In Engine Manager, create or select the live application that will receive the camera feed.
  2. Enable playback types. In the application’s playback settings, enable the formats required by the viewers’ players. Wowza lists MPEG-DASH, HLS, RTMP, and RTSP/RTP as options. Apply the relevant playback and security changes, then restart the application as directed by Wowza’s guide.
  3. Get the camera’s RTSP URI. Use the camera manual or manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model and stream profile. Wowza cautions that “IP camera manufacturers use proprietary URL syntax,” so there is no safe universal URI template to substitute for the model-specific address. Wowza’s IP-camera guide was updated September 30, 2026.
  4. Check the source before adding it. Open the URI in VLC and inspect Tools > Codec Information. Wowza’s guide lists H.264/AVC1/MPEG4 Part 10 or H.265/HEVC video, and AAC or MP3 audio, as its format guidance. If the camera sends a format the Engine workflow does not support, transcode the feed before sending it to Engine. This guidance is not a guarantee that every codec combination works in every playback client.
  5. Add a Stream File. In Engine Manager, open the application’s Stream Files area and add a stream file using the camera’s RTSP URI. If the URI requires credentials, use the camera’s own username and password as specified by its manual.
  6. Connect it to the application. Configure the stream file’s MediaCaster Type as rtp, then connect or start the stream file for the live application. Use rtp-record instead only if you intend to record the incoming stream to one file as well.
  7. Verify ingest and playback. In the application’s Incoming Streams view, check that the stream is listed as Active; inspect uptime and throughput. Use Test Playback to generate a playback URL, then open it with a player that supports the selected playback type.

Which RTSP URL should I use for my camera?

Use the RTSP stream URI documented for your camera’s exact manufacturer, model, firmware, and stream profile. Vendors may use different paths and credential formats, and a model may offer more than one stream profile. A URL that works for another camera—even one from the same manufacturer—may not identify the right stream.

Test the URI directly in VLC before troubleshooting Wowza. That separates source-side problems (such as an incorrect path, unreachable camera, or rejected login) from Engine configuration or playback problems. Keep the two credential contexts distinct: the camera URI may contain or request the camera’s own login, while Wowza separately requires source authentication for RTSP/RTP encoders publishing into Engine by default.

Set up source authentication into Wowza

Wowza’s default source-authentication requirement applies to encoders publishing RTSP/RTP streams into Engine; it is separate from authentication used to read the camera’s source URI. Configure the Engine-side credentials under Source Authentication in Engine Manager, and ensure the publishing connection uses those credentials. See Wowza’s documentation for configuring source authentication and publishing a stream to Wowza Streaming Engine.

Fix common IP-camera-to-Wowza problems

Symptom What to check Documented remedy or scope
The stream file will not connect, or the camera rejects the request Confirm the URI path against the camera manual, test the URI in VLC, and check the camera account credentials. Correct the model-specific URI or camera login. Do not assume Engine authentication credentials are the camera credentials.
VLC plays the source but Engine or a playback client does not Inspect Codec Information in VLC and compare the source to Wowza’s listed video and audio format guidance. Transcode before sending the feed to Engine if its formats are unsupported. A compatible ingest format does not ensure every player supports every output combination.
The camera cannot use RTSP/RTP interleaved transport (RTP over TCP) Check whether the camera and network support the transport Engine is attempting to use. Wowza documents setting the application property RTPTransportMode to udp for this case. This property affects all streams delivered by that application, not just the camera being diagnosed; consider other streams before changing it.
A camera behind NAT advertises an unreachable private address Check whether the RTSP response advertises a private host or port that Engine cannot reach. For Wowza Streaming Engine 4.12.0 and later, Wowza documents the per-stream-file setting rtspIgnoreAdvertisedHost. It uses the host and port from the configured URI in place of the advertised host and port while retaining the other URI details described in the guide.
The feed repeatedly disconnects during validation and reconnects Determine whether the disconnects coincide with periodic RTSP/RTP validation before changing application behavior. Wowza documents rtspValidationFrequency as an option to turn off periodic validation for cameras that disconnect during it. The application property affects every stream in the application, so use it only after diagnosing the cause.
Incoming Streams is active, but the viewer cannot play the result Check that the requested playback type is enabled, the application changes were followed by a restart, and the client supports the generated playback URL’s format. Enable the required playback type and verify again with Test Playback using an appropriate client.

The transport, NAT, and validation settings above are documented Engine remedies, not universal fixes. Their application-wide scope matters when the same application serves other streams.

How does the Wowza Video camera workflow differ?

Wowza’s separate page for connecting an IP camera to Wowza Video is explicitly labeled Legacy and was updated February 8, 2024. It describes selecting IP Camera as the source, entering a publicly accessible camera URL, matching the input resolution, starting the stream, and checking the preview. Because that workflow requires a publicly accessible hostname or IP address and the page is marked Legacy, check current Wowza Video availability and interface before relying on it; the page does not establish current availability or pricing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That Legacy article recommends a keyframe interval of 60 fps for NTSC or 50 fps for PAL. Treat this as the recommendation in that specific legacy workflow, not a general camera setting or a requirement for Streaming Engine. See Wowza’s Legacy IP-camera instructions for Wowza Video.
