Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To live stream 360-degree video with Wowza Streaming Engine, publish a stitched or equirectangular camera feed to a live application—typically over RTMP—then deliver it over HLS to a player that can render spherical video. Wowza handles ingest and delivery; the player is what lets viewers look around. A standard video player may show the same feed as a flat rectangle.
How the 360-degree workflow fits together
A 360 stream depends on three parts working as one chain: the camera or encoder produces a suitable 360 image, Wowza Streaming Engine receives and packages the feed, and a compatible playback app interprets the image as a sphere. Wowza’s documented example uses RTMP ingest and HLS playback. Its test players did not render the stream in 360 mode, so the walkthrough sent the HLS URL to a separate VR-capable player.

Wowza’s current specification lists H.264 as a supported RTMP video input and HLS as a supported delivery format. Those facts establish protocol and codec support, not that every camera, player, or spherical metadata combination will work automatically. Wowza Streaming Engine specifications
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat you need before setup
- A 360 camera and its encoder or control software, configured to output a stitched 360 feed in a format the planned workflow accepts.
- A Wowza Streaming Engine instance with a live application and HLS playback enabled.
- The application’s RTMP publishing details: server host, port, application name, and stream name.
- A separate VR or 360-capable player that can open the HLS URL and display the image in spherical mode.
- A reachable network path between the camera or encoder, Wowza server, and viewers. A private or local IP address is not sufficient for remote publishing or playback.
Wowza’s 360 walkthrough used an Insta360 Pro 2 and its control software, but that is a November 2020 example, not confirmation of current availability or a present-day recommendation. Check your camera’s current firmware and documentation for output resolution, codec, frame rate, stitching, projection, and publishing support before relying on a particular setup. Set up RTMP ingest and HLS playback
- Create or select a live application. In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, create a live application or open the one intended for the event. Enable HLS playback for that application if your chosen player will consume HLS. Menu names can vary by Engine version, so confirm the settings in the documentation for your installed release.
- Keep source authentication enabled. Wowza says RTMP- and RTSP-based encoders must provide source credentials by default. Give the camera or encoder the correct source username and password. Do not copy the 2020 tutorial’s temporary choice to open RTMP sources for a local demonstration into a production configuration. Wowza Streaming Engine specifications
- Record the publishing endpoint. Assemble the server address, RTMP port, application name, and stream name in the format expected by your camera’s publishing software. The historical walkthrough used TCP port 1935 and a chosen stream name; use the port and endpoint configured for your own Engine and network.
- Check network access. Wowza lists TCP 1935 for RTMP and TCP 80/443 for HTTP/HTTPS streaming. Ensure the relevant ports are reachable through the server firewall and any network equipment between the publisher, Engine, and viewers. Do not expose more ports than the workflow needs. Wowza Streaming Engine specifications
- Publish from the camera or encoder. Enter the Engine endpoint and source credentials in the camera’s current control software, then start publishing. Confirm that the stream appears among the live sources in Engine before troubleshooting playback.
Open the HLS feed in a 360-capable player
- Copy the HLS playback URL for the live application and stream from Engine Manager.
- In the VR or 360 player, select HLS as the source format and paste the URL.
- Enable the player’s 360, spherical, or equivalent viewing mode. The exact label and controls depend on the player and device.
- Check that viewers can look around in the intended browser, headset, or mobile app. If the video appears as a flat equirectangular rectangle, the feed may be playing but the player is not rendering it as a sphere.
In Wowza’s November 2020 demonstration, presenter Justin Miller said of the test players, “I can’t really look at VR360 video through our test players.” The example used Field Player as an external player; treat that as a historical illustration rather than a current endorsement. Verify present-day player compatibility before an event. Wowza’s 360 video walkthrough
Test the complete experience before going live
Test from the same kind of remote network and playback device your audience will use. A successful ingest check alone does not verify the spherical viewing experience.

- Six display modes deliver exceptional viewing angles with flexibility and versatility
- Full HD 1080p video playback @ 30 Hz
- USB UVC/UAC plug-and-play with touch bar to specify participants’ location. *Note: App permissions may need to be authorized in order to use the camera. An upgrade of the firmware to the latest version may be required in order to optimize the webcam's functionality and resolution.
- Supports your favorite video conferencing apps: Compatible with Skype, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Cisco, Zoom, BlueJeans, Amazon Chime, GoToMeeting, Slack
- Projection and orientation: Confirm the scene is stitched correctly and the viewer’s initial direction and horizon look right.
- Playback compatibility: Verify that the target player accepts the HLS URL and exposes a spherical viewing mode.
- Picture and sound: Check resolution, frame rate, buffering, and audio sync on the actual player and network.
- End-to-end delay: Measure camera-to-viewer delay in your own configuration. A 2020 local demonstration reported a 10–15-second delay with its particular low-latency HLS settings; that is not a general Wowza guarantee.
- Bitrate and rendition behavior: If you need adaptive bitrate, Wowza documents a transcoder workflow for creating aligned renditions. Confirm that the complete camera, transcoding, packaging, and player chain preserves the image’s projection and any metadata your player needs. Wowza adaptive-bitrate workflow
When to consider another delivery path
Choose protocols and packaging around the target player and latency requirement, not just the camera’s capabilities. RTMP ingest with HLS playback is the directly documented pattern in Wowza’s 360 example. If you need browser-oriented real-time delivery, Wowza also documents WebRTC and protocol bridging, but the cited 360 walkthrough does not establish a turnkey WebRTC-based spherical player workflow.
WebRTC has a security prerequisite: Wowza’s guide, updated September 30, 2026, states, “Encryption is mandatory for WebRTC, so you must configure TLS before streaming.” Confirm the player’s 360 support separately; protocol support alone does not ensure spherical rendering. If forwarding a stream to another platform, Wowza supports generic RTMP Stream Targets. Configure the destination first and confirm its requirements for 360 projection and metadata. For multiple adaptive-bitrate renditions, the destination must have corresponding streams and targets. Wowza Stream Targets configuration
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No live source appears in Engine | Incorrect endpoint, stream name, credentials, or network path. | Compare the camera’s RTMP host, port, application, stream name, and source credentials with the live application. Confirm the configured RTMP port is reachable. |
| The stream plays, but viewers see a flat image | The player is treating the equirectangular feed as ordinary video. | Use a player with 360 or spherical rendering and explicitly enable its 360 mode. |
| The HLS URL does not open | HLS playback may not be enabled, the URL may be wrong, or HTTP/HTTPS access may be blocked. | Verify the application’s playback configuration and URL, then check the network path and relevant HTTP/HTTPS ports. |
| Remote viewers cannot connect although local playback works | The endpoint may use a private address, or a firewall may block remote traffic. | Use a remotely reachable server address and configure only the necessary network access for ingest and playback. |
| Picture quality or buffering is inconsistent | Available bandwidth, camera output, server capacity, or rendition selection may not match the stream. | Test the full path at the intended resolution and frame rate, then check each device’s actual playback and any transcoder renditions. |
| The horizon, orientation, or seams look wrong | Capture, stitching, projection, or player interpretation may be mismatched. | Check the camera’s output and stitching settings, then verify the player’s spherical mode and orientation controls. |
| WebRTC setup fails before playback | TLS may not be configured. | Follow Wowza’s WebRTC TLS requirements, then separately validate the player’s support for 360 presentation. |
Plan server capacity and ports carefully
Wowza’s specifications updated in 2026 give vendor hardware recommendations rather than 360-specific performance benchmarks. The listed high-load production profile is a six-core 3.00 GHz-or-better CPU, 16–32 GB RAM, SATA SSD, and 10 Gbps Ethernet; its minimum-production recommendation is a single quad-core 3.00 GHz-or-better CPU, 4 GB RAM, SATA HDD, and 1 Gbps Ethernet. These are not universal requirements or a guarantee that a given server can handle a particular 360 workload. Size for your actual stream count, resolution, transcoding needs, and delivery pattern, then load-test the complete setup. Wowza Streaming Engine specifications
