Choose the right way to stream
| Method | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Computer webcam | A teacher speaking to camera or teaching at a board with a simple setup. | YouTube describes this as a direct way to go live from a computer. You select a webcam and microphone in the live setup. YouTube’s webcam streaming guide. |
| Mobile | A lesson that needs to be streamed from a phone or tablet. | Mobile streaming has additional channel eligibility requirements, including at least 50 subscribers. See the current YouTube live-streaming requirements. |
| Encoder | A more involved production that uses overlays or external audio/video sources. | Create a stream in YouTube Studio and enter its stream URL and key in the encoder. Keep the key private. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide. |
For a typical classroom lesson, start with the computer webcam if its picture and sound are adequate. A built-in or school-provided camera and microphone may be enough; upgrade only if a specific issue, such as unclear speech or an unhelpful camera angle, remains.

Check that the channel can go live
YouTube’s current Help guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. The person streaming must be at least 16 years old. Mobile streaming also requires at least 50 subscribers, and YouTube says a first mobile stream can take up to 24 hours to become available. These are platform requirements, not permanent guarantees; check YouTube’s current eligibility page before the lesson.
Create or schedule the lesson
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Create → Go Live.
- Choose the webcam route for a simple computer-based lesson. For a phone stream, use the mobile flow and confirm mobile eligibility first.
- To arrange a future event, open Live Control Room and choose Manage → Schedule Stream. Scheduling gives you time to share the watch-page link and lets viewers set reminders.
- For an encoder, create the stream in Studio, then copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it with students or include it in a public post.
- Set the title and visibility, then inspect the preview before starting the lesson.
For the webcam route’s current screen-by-screen directions, see Create a live stream via webcam.

Choose who can watch: public, unlisted or private
| Setting | Audience and discoverability | Classroom implication |
|---|---|---|
| Public | May appear on the channel and in search or recommendations. | Use only when broad public access is intended and approved. |
| Unlisted | Does not normally appear in search or the channel’s Videos tab, but anyone with the link can watch and reshare it. | Reduces discoverability; it does not limit viewing to invited people. A recipient can forward the URL. |
| Private | Limited to the creator and selected viewers; comments are unavailable. | More restrictive than unlisted, but requires the appropriate sharing workflow for viewers. |
Check the intended viewers’ access before class, especially if using private sharing. YouTube explains the available choices in Change video privacy settings.
Protect students and set the audience accurately
- Decide whether students will be visible or audible. Frame the teacher and lesson materials where possible, and remove unnecessary names, schedules, student work or identifying details from the shot.
- Check school or district policy and applicable local requirements before recording or streaming students. Rules depend on the location, student ages and intended audience; YouTube’s platform settings do not settle permission or legal questions.
- In Live Control Room, answer the audience question with either Yes, it’s Made for Kids or No, it’s not Made for Kids, based on YouTube’s audience guidance—not merely because the stream takes place in a classroom. Consult YouTube’s audience-setting guidance.
- Avoid saying or showing personal information during the stream. YouTube’s streaming tips include privacy guidance.
Run a preflight before students join
- Check that the camera frames the teacher or teaching area as intended, with unnecessary people and information out of view.
- Select the intended webcam and microphone in the stream setup. Speak at normal teaching volume and listen for clear, intelligible audio.
- Inspect the Live Control Room preview for picture and sound problems.
- Open the watch page on a phone or another viewer device. Confirm that the intended viewers can reach it with the selected privacy setting.
- If useful, do a short private or unlisted rehearsal. Remember that an unlisted link can be forwarded; use the right setting for the rehearsal too.
During the lesson, continue monitoring audio and video. YouTube recommends checking the stream from a viewer device and keeping an eye on sound and picture quality in its streaming tips.

End the stream and check the archive
For a webcam stream, use End Stream. For an encoder stream, stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Afterward, check the recording’s visibility and remove it if it should not remain available; review audience and privacy settings if anything needs correcting. The webcam and encoder guides cover their respective end-of-stream workflows: webcam and encoder.

Troubleshoot common classroom-stream problems
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| Go Live is unavailable | Check channel verification, any live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, the streamer’s age eligibility and—if using a phone—the mobile subscriber requirement. Review YouTube’s current requirements. |
| The first mobile stream is not ready | YouTube says enabling a first mobile stream can take up to 24 hours. Use the computer webcam route if it is available and suitable, or allow time for mobile access to become available. |
| Viewers cannot open the event | Check the selected visibility and test the watch page from a viewer device. For private streams, confirm viewers are included in the sharing workflow; for unlisted streams, share the correct link with the intended audience. |
| Picture or sound is wrong | Recheck the selected webcam and microphone, inspect the Live Control Room preview and test from another device. Monitor the stream while it is live. |
| The link has reached people outside the class | An unlisted link can be reshared. Change the privacy setting as appropriate, review who has access, and follow school policy for any exposed recording or student information. |
| The archived lesson should not remain visible | Review the archive’s visibility after the stream and remove it if it should not be available. YouTube’s automatic archiving guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. |

StreamNeo is for uploaded videos that loop as a 24/7 YouTube stream; it is not a way to go live from a classroom camera. For a lesson recording that should keep playing after upload, the steps are: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
