1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou can reduce the browser information potentially exposed to LinkedIn by removing extensions you do not use and separating LinkedIn from sensitive browsing in another browser or profile. These are cautious precautions, not verified ways to stop the alleged scanning. LinkedIn says it looks for extensions to detect scraping and terms violations; Fairlinked’s BrowserGate report alleges broader collection of extension and device signals. Those claims remain distinct, and a September 2026 court ruling did not decide whether the practice is lawful.
What is BrowserGate, and what is actually established?
“BrowserGate” refers to allegations by the advocacy group Fairlinked that LinkedIn scans for browser extensions and collects other browser or device signals, particularly in Chrome-based browsers. The technical scope and counts described in the report should be treated as Fairlinked’s claims, not independently verified facts. Fairlinked’s explanation of how the alleged system works sets out its account.

LinkedIn acknowledges looking for extensions, but gives a narrower stated purpose: detecting extensions that scrape data or violate its terms, and supporting defenses and site stability. In an April 8, 2026 report, Ars Technica quoted LinkedIn as saying: “To protect the privacy of our members, their data, and to ensure site stability, we do look for extensions that scrape data without members’ consent or otherwise violate LinkedIn’s Terms of Service.” TechRadar also reported LinkedIn’s stated rationale. These statements describe LinkedIn’s position; they do not independently establish what data is collected or how the system operates.

It is not accurate to describe the allegations as a proven data breach or to treat LinkedIn’s explanation as a settled finding.

Can LinkedIn see your browser extensions?
LinkedIn says it looks for extensions that scrape data or otherwise violate its terms. Fairlinked alleges a wider Chrome-based scanning and device-fingerprinting system. The available reporting does not establish the full behavior across browsers, independently verify every technical claim, or show that every LinkedIn visitor is scanned in the same way. The careful answer is that LinkedIn acknowledges extension checks, while the broader scope remains disputed.
What did the September 2026 court ruling decide?
Ars Technica reported on September 10, 2026, that a federal judge dismissed two related federal cases because the plaintiffs had not sufficiently alleged personal, concrete harm—among other issues, that their own extensions conveyed private information. The judge allowed the plaintiffs to amend their complaints and reportedly expressed doubt about the claims’ prospects. The ruling was procedural: it did not decide whether LinkedIn’s alleged practices were lawful or validate the scanning. Plaintiffs’ counsel likewise said the court had not adjudicated legality. Ars Technica’s account of the September 10 ruling describes the decision.

Practical ways to limit potential exposure
Review and remove extensions you no longer need
Open your browser’s extensions or add-ons manager, review what is installed, and remove extensions you no longer use. Fewer installed extensions means fewer extension identifiers that a site using the alleged method could potentially detect. This is a reasonable precaution based on the allegation, not a tested BrowserGate-specific fix.

Separate LinkedIn from sensitive browsing
If you want to reduce the chance that LinkedIn activity and sensitive browsing share a browser environment, use a separate browser or profile for one of them. A separate profile can keep its extensions and browsing data distinct from your main profile, depending on the browser’s implementation. This may reduce exposure to the particular extension scan if the alleged method applies to the browser in question, but it is not a guarantee against fingerprinting or other forms of collection.

Consider limiting LinkedIn use in a browser you believe may be in scope
Fairlinked’s report describes scanning in Chrome-based browsers. If that concern affects your choice, you can avoid visiting LinkedIn in the browser you use for sensitive activity. The reviewed reporting does not independently establish the behavior of every browser or prove that switching browsers makes a user immune; LinkedIn compatibility and features may also vary.
Use ordinary extension hygiene
Install extensions only from publishers you trust, and check requested permissions before adding them. This helps limit the risks posed by extensions themselves. It does not prevent a website from reading browser-exposed signals, so it is general security practice rather than a direct fix for the alleged collection.

Which precautions address which concern?
| Precaution | Potential effect on alleged extension scan | Effect on general fingerprinting | Trade-off and evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remove unused extensions | May reduce the number of extension identifiers available to detect. | Does not necessarily prevent fingerprinting based on other browser or device signals. | Usually low inconvenience; precautionary inference, not a tested BrowserGate fix. |
| Use a separate browser profile | May keep LinkedIn’s browser environment separate from the one used for sensitive activity. | Does not guarantee protection from fingerprinting within either environment. | Some setup and switching; effectiveness depends on browser behavior and the alleged method. |
| Use another browser for LinkedIn | Could avoid the specific alleged Chrome-based scan if it does not apply to that browser. | Does not prove immunity from fingerprinting or other collection. | Convenience or compatibility may differ; reviewed sources do not establish that another browser is immune. |
| Check extension publishers and permissions | No direct evidence that this prevents a website from detecting extensions. | No direct evidence that this prevents fingerprinting. | Useful general browser hygiene, not a BrowserGate-specific shield. |
What these steps cannot promise
- No reviewed source establishes a setting that opts users out of the specific scanning.
- These precautions do not erase information that may already have been collected.
- A VPN, webcam cover, security key, or privacy screen is not shown by the reviewed reporting to prevent browser-side extension probing.
- No browser or profile choice is established as a guaranteed shield from the alleged collection or from browser fingerprinting generally.
