You can reduce how much of your voice is publicly available, but you cannot guarantee that every copy of an online recording will disappear. The practical protection is twofold: review and limit public audio where you can, and make a plan to verify unexpected calls independently. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that scammers may use a short clip found online to make a convincing impersonation call.
Can someone clone your voice from a video online?
Potentially. The FTC says scammers may use a short online audio clip of a loved one with voice-cloning software in a family-emergency impersonation. That warning does not establish a universal minimum amount of audio needed to clone a voice, or mean that every recording will be used this way. Read the FTC consumer alert.

An FTC-hosted proposal abstract, published in the context of the 2024 Voice Cloning Challenge, claims that technology can create a deepfake using three seconds of a person’s voice. Treat that as the proposal authors’ claim, not a universal threshold or an independently established FTC finding. The same abstract describes training data involving more than 120 text-to-speech and voice-cloning systems; that is a description of the proposal’s data, not market-wide coverage. How to reduce the audio you make publicly available
- Review public posts and profiles. Look at videos, social-media posts, and public profile content that contain your speech. Consider whether each recording needs to remain public.
- Restrict or remove recordings you do not want public. Use the privacy or audience controls offered by the service, or delete a post if you choose. These steps can reduce access through that account, but they cannot guarantee that copies already downloaded or shared elsewhere are removed.
- Be selective about future public recordings. Where practical, limit voice recordings you publish publicly. This is a way to reduce avoidable exposure, not a reason to stop speaking in public or to assume your voice has already been compromised.
Make a plan for suspicious calls before one arrives
A familiar voice is not proof of who is on the phone. Agree with family on a simple routine: end the call, dial the person back using a number already saved or otherwise known to you, and contact another trusted relative or friend if you cannot reach them. The FTC’s advice is direct: “Don’t trust the voice.” It recommends checking the story through a known number or another person.

- ULTRASONIC SPEECH PRIVACY: Uses ultrasonic acoustic output (above 25 kHz, inaudible to humans) to help protect speech privacy by masking recorded audio.
- ADAPTIVE PRIVACY COVERAGE: Provides typical privacy coverage up to 20 ft with 270° area protection. Adjustable output levels allow use in small rooms, vehicles, or larger office spaces.
- MULTIPLE OPERATION MODES: Choose from manual, remote, or voice-activated functionality. Voice activation helps conserve power by engaging the device only when conversation is detected.
- PORTABLE & DISCREET DESIGN: Compact (7.68 " × 3.19 " × 1.89 ") and built from durable ABS materials for easy use on the go
- IDEAL FOR CONFIDENTIAL SETTINGS: Suitable for business meetings, executive offices, and travel—ideal for users who value privacy and confidentiality.
Pause if the caller creates urgency, asks you to keep the situation secret, or demands payment by wire transfer, cryptocurrency, or gift card. Verify the situation independently before sending money or sharing sensitive information. Do not rely on whether the voice sounds convincing—or on your ability to detect a fake by ear—as your only check.
What technical protections can and cannot do
The FTC’s April 2024 discussion groups technical approaches into prevention or authentication, real-time detection or monitoring, and evaluation of audio that already exists. These approaches operate at different points and depend on different parties; they are not evidence that consumers can buy one dependable tool to protect all audio already online. The FTC describes its Voice Cloning Challenge as an exploratory effort, not proof that every proposed technique is deployed or commercially available.

- CALLING NOTE - Most Android phones continue using the built-in microphone during calls, allowing normal conversations with REC LOCK connected. On iPhone 15/16/17/18, unplug REC LOCK before calls to use the phone microphone. Results may vary by device, OS version, and app.
- USB-C & USB-A COMPATIBILITY - Features a USB-C connector and includes a USB-C to USB-A adapter for broad compatibility. Works with most smartphones, tablets, and computers, including iPhone 15/16/17, iPad, MacBook, Mac mini, and more.

| Approach | When it acts | Potential role | Who may need to adopt it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reduce public source audio | Before or after a post is published | Limit access to recordings that could serve as source material | The speaker or publisher | Changing or deleting a post cannot guarantee removal of copies elsewhere. |
| Authentication or watermarking | When audio is created, shared, or checked | Help establish or signal the origin of a recording | Content creators, platforms, or communications providers | The FTC notes that watermarks may be altered or removed. |
| Real-time detection or monitoring | During a call or communication | Flag suspicious audio for a recipient or service | Device makers, platforms, or communications providers | Detection is evolving; a false result can mislead, and a flag is not proof of identity. |
| Review of existing audio | After a recording exists | Analyze a clip for signs of generated or manipulated audio | A service or person reviewing the recording | Detection can be wrong; the FTC warns that false positives may cause harm. |
The FTC’s April 2024 article says, “There is no single solution.” Its discussion explains why prevention, authentication, and detection should be treated as possible layers rather than guarantees. Read the FTC’s overview of approaches and limitations. The agency’s Voice Cloning Challenge describes an effort to explore prevention, monitoring, and evaluation; it does not establish that proposed tools are available to consumers.
