For a lower-carbon European holiday, plan the long intercity legs around trains first, then use scheduled buses where they make a practical connection. Compare complete itineraries—not just time spent aboard—using door-to-door travel time, total fare, reliability, comfort, safety, and the scope of the emissions evidence. No single mode ranking can calculate the footprint of your particular trip.

Why start with trains and scheduled buses?

The European Environment Agency (EEA) found that trains were the most efficient motorised passenger mode in the EU-27 on average during 2014–2018. Buses and coaches were the most efficient road passenger mode in that comparison, while flights and cars were among the least efficient. The EEA’s statement that “Trains are the most efficient form of passenger transport in the EU” describes that historical, EU-wide average—not every route or vehicle. Read the EEA’s comparison.

That comparison is useful for choosing which modes to investigate, not for calculating an itinerary’s emissions. Route, occupancy, energy source, and calculation boundaries can affect a specific result. The EEA also reports approximately 3 MtCO2e of direct rail emissions in the EU-27 in 2023, representing 0.3% of direct transport emissions. Those are sector-wide inventory figures, not emissions per passenger-kilometre or an estimate for an individual holiday. See the EEA’s transport emissions indicator.

How to sketch a workable itinerary

  1. Choose the places you want to visit. Mark the long intercity legs first; keep local sightseeing and accommodation decisions separate until you know how the main connections work.
  2. Look for direct or straightforward trains. Check whether the rail journey connects the places you want to visit without excessive transfers or inconvenient station locations.
  3. Add scheduled buses where they help. A coach may provide a workable link where rail does not, or connect destinations more conveniently. Do not assume every route has a practical train or bus alternative.
  4. Compare door to door. Include travel to and from stations, transfer time, waiting, and the likelihood of making each connection—not only the scheduled time on the train or bus.
  5. Check live trip details with the seller or operator. For your dates, confirm schedules, fares, seat or sleeper availability, ticket flexibility, and current terms.
  6. Check connection protection before buying. Confirm whether the itinerary is sold as a through-ticket and what happens if a delay causes you to miss a connection.

Compare realistic options on the same terms

When you have two or more plausible itineraries, compare them side by side. The European Commission’s rail-versus-air work considers passenger trade-offs including time, price, reliability, comfort, and safety, but its findings depend on particular route and mode assumptions. Use those factors as a checklist, then verify values for your own dates. See the European Commission’s rail-versus-air material.

What to compare What to check
Emissions evidence Use the EEA’s mode-level comparison as broad context. It is not a live route calculator or a trip-specific footprint.
Door-to-door time Add station access, transfers, waits, and onward travel to the scheduled vehicle time.
Total fare and flexibility Compare the full cost for the party and dates, including any relevant booking conditions and ticket flexibility.
Reliability and connection risk Look at the connections in the actual itinerary and whether a missed connection is protected by the ticket terms.
Comfort and safety Consider the length and timing of each leg, the transfer arrangement, and what matters to the people travelling.

How to book across several countries

Cross-border rail booking can be awkward because operators’ booking systems are fragmented. In May 2026, the European Commission described proposals intended to enable single-ticket bookings across operators and make sustainable cross-border options easier to identify. These were described as proposals; do not treat them as requirements already in force. Read the Commission’s May 2026 announcement and its passenger mobility package material.

Until booking options are clear for your route, check the relevant operator or seller for each leg and make sure you understand whether the itinerary is one protected journey or several separate purchases. A convenient search result or combined itinerary display does not by itself establish what ticket you hold or which protections apply.

What EU rail rights mean for connections

Your rights can depend on the service and how the tickets are structured. The EU’s Your Europe guidance says rail passenger rules generally apply to journeys in the EU, while allowing exceptions for certain services. EU countries cannot exempt cross-border rail journeys between EU countries. The guidance says missed-connection rights apply when you hold a through-ticket; do not assume the same protection for separately purchased tickets. Check the applicable rules and terms before booking. Read the EU rail passenger-rights guidance.

What you need to verify for your dates

Broad mode comparisons and EU-wide rights information cannot tell you whether a specific connection is running, affordable, available, or suitable on your travel dates. Before committing, verify the actual schedule, fare, seat or sleeper inventory, transfer times, and ticket conditions with the current seller or operator. Then compare the complete journeys against the priorities that matter to your trip.
