In a WooCommerce store, quantity limits are usually set with an extension. Choose one based on what the rule counts: units of one product, a combined category total, the whole order, or a customer’s purchases over time. Those scopes are not interchangeable, and the right setup also needs to validate cart changes and checkout—not just show a preferred quantity on the product page.
Decide what the limit should count
Write the rule in plain language before choosing an extension. For example, “no more than five of this product per order” differs from “no more than five items from this category combined.” A category rule might instead cap each product in that category separately.

- One product or variation: Set a minimum, maximum, or required multiple for a specific item.
- A category: Decide whether the cap applies separately to each product or to the combined quantity across the category.
- The order: Set a minimum or maximum for the cart or order as a whole.
- A customer over time: Limit a customer’s purchases across previous orders or a defined period, such as a week or month.
- A customer type: Apply different rules to users, roles, or guests where the extension supports those filters.
These distinctions matter when preventing bulk buying, setting wholesale minimums, limiting a promotion, or managing scarce stock. A maximum per order alone does not necessarily prevent someone from placing multiple orders.

Choose an extension that matches the rule

Compare the needed scope, role or customer targeting, previous-order checks, time windows, increments, and category aggregation before deciding. An extension’s documented features do not establish compatibility with every theme, checkout customization, or other plugin; check its current compatibility information for your setup.

Set product and order quantities with Min/Max Quantities
For a straightforward minimum, maximum, or multiple on a product, WooCommerce documents these settings for its Min/Max Quantities extension:
- In the WordPress dashboard, go to Products and edit the product.
- In Product data, open General.
- Enter the desired Minimum Quantity and Maximum Quantity. Set Group of if customers must buy in multiples.
- For order-level rules, go to WooCommerce > Settings > Products > General and configure the available order quantity settings.
The extension describes its multiples feature as requiring specific products or product categories to be purchased in predefined multiples. If product and category rules overlap, check the precedence behavior in the current documentation and confirm the result on your store.

Verify that customers cannot bypass the rule
A quantity field on a product page is only one part of enforcement. Customers may add an item again, edit quantities in the cart, or proceed through a customized checkout. Test the entire path after configuring a rule:

- Open the product page and try a quantity that should be allowed.
- Try a quantity below the minimum, above the maximum, and—if configured—in the wrong multiple.
- Add the product more than once, then inspect whether the cart checks the total across those actions.
- Edit the quantity in the cart and attempt checkout with both allowed and disallowed totals.
- Where relevant, repeat as a logged-in customer, a different user role, and a guest; test prior-order or time-window rules against the intended audience.
Confirm the store displays a clear validation message when a cart violates the rule, and that the customer cannot complete checkout with an invalid quantity. Run these checks with the active theme and checkout configuration, since documentation for an extension does not guarantee compatibility with every customized store.
