1. Choose an extension that fits your program
Decide what the store needs before installing anything. A basic referral-link program has different requirements from one that includes applicant review, coupon referrals, product-specific commissions, customer referral rewards or multi-tier commissions. Depending on the extension, rules may apply storewide, to particular products or categories, or to individual affiliates; some support tiers. Review how the plugin handles competing referrals, tracking duration, self-referrals and coupons, because these controls vary between products. Set payout rules and email
Choose from the payout methods the selected extension supports, then define any withdrawal process, minimum threshold and conditions for when a commission becomes payable. Confirm that application, approval, referral and payout emails can be delivered; the program depends on working email delivery for these messages.
4. Test a referral before launch
Run a complete test using a test affiliate and an order you can identify. Affiliate for WooCommerce’s onboarding guide recommends checking a generated referral link in a private browser window and notes that caching can interfere if the referral cookie is not detected.
- Create or designate a test affiliate and generate a referral link.
- Open the link in a private browser session, separate from any store-admin session.

- If the referral is missing, check whether site caching is stripping referral parameters or preventing the tracking cookie from being set, then repeat the test.
