If a continuous FFmpeg stream is filling your VPS disk, first check whether FFmpeg or its service wrapper is also writing a local recording, HLS/DASH segments, a report, or logs. Sending video to YouTube does not require saving a local copy. Remove unintended file outputs; if local HLS files are required, configure and verify a bounded segment-retention policy for your installed FFmpeg version.
Find what is writing to disk
Do not start by deleting files or adding a generic cleanup job. Inspect the exact FFmpeg command, its working directory, the service definition or wrapper that launches it, and any configured output paths. FFmpeg can write to multiple outputs in one invocation: a network destination can carry the live stream while a separate file destination records or segments it. Its command-line documentation notes that options apply to the next specified file, so review option placement and every output, not just the YouTube URL. FFmpeg command-line documentation

- Recording output: look for a local filename or path after an output option in addition to the network destination.
- HLS or DASH output: look for a playlist and a directory of media segments. These are files even if another output is sending the feed to YouTube.
- FFmpeg report: check whether
FFREPORTis set; FFmpeg documents it as a way to write a report file. - Wrapper and service output: inspect shell redirection and service logging. These can write logs independently of FFmpeg’s media outputs.
- Other disk consumers: operating-system logs and temporary files may be unrelated to FFmpeg. Their location and cleanup method depend on the VPS operating system and service setup.
Use your system’s usual disk-usage tools to identify which directory is growing, then match that path to the command or service configuration. The location alone is not proof that FFmpeg created the files; check timestamps, filenames, and the active process configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you do not need a local recording
Configure FFmpeg to send the required encoded output directly to YouTube’s network ingestion endpoint, and remove any unintended local recording or segment output. YouTube documents RTMP/RTMPS and HLS ingestion; for a direct continuous network stream, RTMP/RTMPS avoids creating local HLS segment files as part of the output. YouTube live encoder settings

- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Do not copy a generic command without checking your input, codecs, stream key handling, and service wrapper. Preserve any input mapping, transcoding, reconnect behavior, and restart policy your existing workflow needs. Keep the stream key out of logs, shared command output, and public configuration examples. The key identifies your broadcast destination; treat it as a credential.
FFmpeg’s options are scoped to the next input or output, so verify the complete command after editing it. A network output does not cancel a separate file output elsewhere in the same command. FFmpeg command-line documentation

If local HLS files are required
HLS produces a playlist and media segments. If those files must remain on the VPS, configure a rolling playlist and the HLS muxer behavior that removes segments outside the retained window. A playlist window by itself should not be assumed to delete old files: confirm that the relevant deletion option is supported by your installed FFmpeg build and that files actually disappear as the stream runs. YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide requires TS segments and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. That is an ingestion requirement for YouTube, not a universal guarantee that every local directory used by every FFmpeg setup is cleaned up. YouTube also notes that HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP because it sends segments. YouTube HLS setup

- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Before relying on a retention setting, test with the actual FFmpeg binary and inspect the output directory over time. Confirm the playlist advances, old segments are removed as intended, and disk use stops growing beyond the retention window plus the current files.
Choose the output that matches the job
| Workflow | Local disk effect | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct RTMP/RTMPS output to YouTube | No media files are needed for delivery, provided no separate file output is configured. | You need a live feed and do not need a local segment archive. | Does not retain a local copy for replay or recovery. |
| Local HLS output | Creates a playlist and segment files; disk use depends on configured retention and cleanup behavior. | You need local HLS files or an HLS workflow. | Requires deliberate segment retention; YouTube HLS has higher latency than RTMP and has its own ingestion requirements. |
These are delivery and retention choices, not bitrate settings. A higher encoding bitrate affects the data rate of the stream; it does not cap how many hours of local files an unbounded output can accumulate. YouTube’s recommended encoder settings depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so choose settings for the actual VPS upload capacity rather than treating bitrate as a disk limit. Verify the change before a long broadcast
- Inspect the active command and service configuration, including every output URL or path, report settings, redirection, and working directory.
- Remove only the unintended local output, or configure HLS retention if local segments are required. Confirm the options against the installed FFmpeg version.
- Run a test stream with similar audio and motion to the planned broadcast, then watch YouTube’s stream-health messages. YouTube recommends testing before going live. YouTube live encoder settings
- Monitor the relevant directory during the test. Check that disk use behaves as intended and that the YouTube stream remains healthy.
- After the test, review service logs for output errors or restarts. Avoid exposing the stream key while collecting or sharing logs.
Common causes and fixes
- The VPS fills despite a live YouTube feed: another output may be recording locally. Find every output in the FFmpeg command and remove the archive destination if it is not needed.
- An HLS directory grows continuously: confirm that segment deletion is enabled and supported by the installed muxer, and check whether old files are actually removed. A rolling playlist alone does not establish local cleanup.
- Disk growth continues after media output is fixed: identify whether service logs, an FFmpeg report, or unrelated system files are growing before changing their cleanup policy.
- HLS is rejected or unhealthy on YouTube: compare the output with YouTube’s HLS requirements, including TS segments and a rolling playlist of no more than five outstanding segments.
- Settings documented online do not work on the VPS: check the local FFmpeg version and its supported muxer options. FFmpeg says its web documentation is regenerated nightly and recommends local documentation for older versions. FFmpeg documentation
- The test stream is unstable: review YouTube’s stream-health messages and confirm that the selected encoder settings fit the VPS’s real upload capacity.
