How to Limit Connected-Car Data Sharing Without Losing Essential Safety Features

Connected-car privacy settings vary by vehicle. Learn how to limit optional driving and location sharing while checking the effect on crash notification, emergency help, maps, and driver assistance.

You can often limit optional connected-car data sharing without switching off every connected service—but there is no universal privacy setting that guarantees all safety services will keep working. Start with your exact vehicle’s privacy settings and manual, turn off optional categories individually, and verify what each change means for crash notification, emergency calling, roadside assistance, maps, and driver-assistance features.

How do I stop my car from sharing my driving data?

Use the vehicle’s own controls and check the manufacturer’s app and account as well. Settings depend on the car’s equipment, market, model year, and connected services; do not assume a menu path or toggle has the same effect across vehicles. Ford, for example, identifies controls for vehicle data, location, and driving data but says availability varies by vehicle, and warns that preventing transmission can affect connected features (Ford U.S. Connected Vehicle Privacy notice; Ford owner manuals).

  1. Identify the exact vehicle. Note the make, model, model year, trim, country, and software version if available. Open the matching owner’s manual and manufacturer privacy notice; instructions for another model or year may not apply.
  2. Inventory the places data controls appear. Check the dashboard’s privacy or data-sharing menu, manufacturer app and account, driver profiles, connected-service subscriptions, and any apps linked through infotainment, Bluetooth, or a vehicle account. These may control different data or services.
  3. Review optional categories individually. Look for driving-score or behavior analytics, location sharing, marketing or product-improvement sharing, and optional data-sharing enrollment. Turn off only controls whose descriptions you understand; not every vehicle offers each category.
  4. Check safety and service dependencies before changing broad connectivity settings. Consult the manual for automatic crash notification, emergency calling, roadside assistance, remote diagnostics, map updates, navigation, and driver-assistance functions. If the effect of a control is unclear, ask the manufacturer about your exact vehicle before disabling it.
  5. Verify the change in both places. Reopen the vehicle settings and check the app or account for separate sharing controls. An icon or app deletion alone does not establish that all data transmission has stopped.

Connected-vehicle information can be sensitive. The FTC identifies location and biometric data among the information vehicles may collect and discusses privacy and financial-welfare risks from its use and disclosure (FTC, “Cars & Consumer Data: On Unlawful Collection & Use”).

Will turning off connected services disable safety features?

It can affect some services, but the answer depends on what the particular vehicle’s control disables. Automatic crash notification is a connected service: NHTSA explains that it can provide crash location to responders. That is distinct from driver-assistance functions such as automatic emergency braking or lane systems, which are vehicle technologies; drivers remain responsible for safe driving (NHTSA, “Driver Assistance Technologies”).

OBDLink EX FORScan OBD Adapter
  • CUSTOM-DESIGNED FOR USE WITH FORSCAN: Works with all FORScan compatible vehicles and is recommended by the FORScan Team
  • DEALERSHIP-LEVEL DIAGNOSTICS: OBDLink EX supports all Ford protocols, modules, and advanced features of FORScan
  • ELECTRONIC SWITCH allows FORScan to access all CAN buses simultaneously and enables advanced functions not possible with “toggle switch” adapters
  • MAXIMUM THROUGHPUT -- up to 20 times faster than “toggle switch” adapters
  • ROCK-SOLID CONNECTION avoids data corruption and dropped packets

Some driver-assistance features may also rely on data delivered through connected services. Ford’s 2026 Aviator manual, for example, says some driver-assistance features use map data and warns that changing privacy settings may impair features. This is a model-year-specific example, not a rule for every Ford or other make (2026 Aviator Owner’s Manual).

  • Decide which functions matter to you: crash response and remote help, offline driver aids, navigation, or app-based conveniences may have different dependencies.
  • Ask whether a setting stops a particular data category, cancels a connected service, or disables the vehicle’s modem or connectivity more broadly.
  • Do not assume that a safety feature is unaffected—or that an emergency connection is optional—unless the manual or manufacturer confirms it for your vehicle.

How do I turn off location tracking in my car?

Look for location or precise-location controls in the vehicle and manufacturer account, but distinguish where the location goes and why it is used. Location may support emergency response or a service you actively use, while other sharing may be optional. Check the control’s description and service terms before changing it; a single broad connectivity switch may affect more than location sharing.

Privacy controls and obligations can also be specific to a company. In January 2026, the FTC finalized an order concerning GM and OnStar. Among other requirements, the order calls for affirmative express consent before covered data collection, use, or sharing, subject to limited exceptions; access and deletion mechanisms; and a precise-geolocation control where the vehicle supports it. It also includes a five-year ban on specified disclosures to consumer reporting agencies and obligations for the order’s 20-year duration. These terms apply to that order, not automatically to other automakers (FTC, GM/OnStar final order announcement).

How do I keep crash assistance but stop driving data from being shared?

There is no general setting that can be recommended for every car. Use the manual to separate optional driving analytics from emergency and other connected services, then confirm the dependency with the manufacturer if the wording is unclear. A privacy control may limit one category while leaving another service active, or a broad connectivity setting may affect multiple functions.

Keep these distinctions in mind when reviewing settings:

  • Local sensing is not the same as transmission. A vehicle can process sensor data onboard while separately offering to transmit recordings or telemetry. Tesla says camera AI data for listed functions is processed in-vehicle by default and that sharing camera recordings for fleet learning requires consent controlled through the touchscreen. Tesla also describes safety-critical event recordings differently. These are Tesla’s statements about its systems, not a cross-brand rule (Tesla Privacy Notice).
  • Crash notification is not the same as collision avoidance. A connected notification can send crash location to responders; a driver-assistance feature may operate in the vehicle. Check each function separately rather than treating every safety feature as tracking.
  • Third-party integrations have separate terms. Ford says information disclosed through linked third-party apps or services is subject to those parties’ terms and privacy policies. Review and unlink integrations you no longer want to use (Ford U.S. Connected Vehicle Privacy notice).

What should I do before selling or transferring the car?

A factory or master reset, account unlinking, and deleting a phone app are different actions. Ford says its master/factory reset removes imported personal information and disconnects modem-equipped vehicles from Ford or Lincoln accounts; it also says deleting the app without a reset does not stop vehicle data sharing. Follow the exact vehicle’s manual, remove the car from associated accounts, and clear locally stored contacts and paired-device information before transfer (Ford U.S. Connected Vehicle Privacy notice).

FTC action involving GM and OnStar also underscores why consent and controls matter. The agency’s January 2025 announcement described allegations that GM monitored and sold precise geolocation and driver-behavior information; FTC Chair Lina M. Khan said: “GM monitored and sold people’s precise geolocation data and driver behavior information, sometimes as often as every three seconds.” That statement concerns the FTC’s allegations about GM users, not a general rate for connected cars (FTC, January 2025 announcement).

No cross-manufacturer figure establishes how much data a typical connected car transmits or what share of safety functions will stop when a privacy setting changes. The reliable way to limit sharing while retaining services you value is to use controls for your exact vehicle, change optional categories separately where possible, and verify the effect before disabling broad connectivity.
