What to Do If You’re Laid Off and Can’t Find a New Job

If you’ve been laid off and your search is going nowhere, protect your income and health coverage first, then get an outside review of where the search is stalling. Apply promptly for unemployment through the state where you worked, check your coverage deadlines, and contact a local American Job Center for free job-search help. A long search is stressful; it does not, by itself, mean you are doing something wrong. No one tactic guarantees a job, and benefits and services depend on your state and circumstances.

First, protect income and keep track of deadlines

Apply for state unemployment

Unemployment insurance is administered by states; there is no federal unemployment program. Eligibility, benefit amounts, and ongoing requirements vary. A layoff alone does not establish that you qualify. Many states consider recent earnings and work history, and may require continued certifications or job-search activity. Check your state agency’s rules and follow them throughout a claim. The U.S. Department of Labor explains how to find your state unemployment insurance program.

In most cases, file in the state where you worked. If you worked remotely, across state lines, or in more than one state, contact a state unemployment office for guidance rather than guessing. File promptly, keep the confirmation number, answer requests, and note certification deadlines and instructions.

Get your employment and benefits paperwork

Ask your former employer or plan administrator for final-pay and severance details, the date job-based health coverage ends, COBRA election information, and retirement-plan documents. Save account statements, the plan contact details, and the Summary Plan Description (SPD), which describes plan terms. The Department of Labor’s job-loss benefits guidance explains why to retain these records and contact the plan administrator about benefits and distribution rules.

Write down the last day of active health coverage and, when it arrives, the date on the COBRA election notice. Those dates help you compare options before enrollment windows close.

Choose health coverage before the old plan ends

Do not let job-based coverage lapse simply because the next step is unclear. Compare Marketplace coverage, COBRA, Medicaid or CHIP, and an eligible spouse or family member’s employer plan. Check the actual premium, coverage start date, doctors and hospitals in the network, prescription coverage, deductible, and maximum out-of-pocket cost. A lower premium can come with different cost-sharing or provider access.

Option What it can offer Timing and costs to check
Marketplace plan Individual health coverage; depending on household and income eligibility, premium tax credits or cost-sharing savings may be available. The application can also screen for Medicaid or CHIP. Loss of job-based coverage generally gives you a Special Enrollment Period. Apply within 60 days of losing that coverage. Confirm the effective date, premium after any savings, network, prescriptions, deductible, and out-of-pocket maximum. HealthCare.gov: losing job-based coverage.
COBRA Continuation of the former employer group plan, which may let you keep existing plan benefits and provider access. The election window is generally 60 days from the later of the date coverage ends or the date you receive the election notice. You typically pay the full premium plus an administrative fee of up to 2%. Coverage is usually available for up to 18 months after job loss. Compare the total cost with other plans. Department of Labor: health benefits after job loss.
Spouse or family member’s employer plan Group coverage may be available through a spouse or family member if you meet the plan’s eligibility rules. Request special enrollment within 30 days after losing eligibility for your old coverage. Ask the plan administrator about the effective date, premium, network, and required documents. Department of Labor: group health plan enrollment rights.
Medicaid or CHIP Free or low-cost coverage for people who meet the program rules. Eligibility depends on your circumstances and state. HealthCare.gov says eligible people may enroll at any time; confirm eligibility and the start date before ending other coverage. HealthCare.gov: Medicaid and CHIP.

Marketplace savings depend on household and income information. If your income changes while you are enrolled, report the change to the Marketplace so eligibility can be recalculated. Confirm your own eligibility and coverage dates with the relevant agency or plan; do not assume you qualify based on being laid off.

Get a fresh, free assessment of your job search

When applications are not producing results, use a local employment service to review your approach before paying for generic advice or training. American Job Centers can offer job-search assistance, resume and interview help, career counseling, referrals, placement support, and training referrals. Ask what is available locally and whether any services have eligibility requirements. The Department of Labor lists the toll-free number 1-877-US-2JOBS.

If the layoff is recent or affected a group of workers, contact your state’s Rapid Response or Dislocated Worker Unit and ask whether it is offering a session. The state may connect affected workers with workshops, benefit information, employment services, training, and other support. The service mix depends on your location and layoff circumstances. The Department of Labor describes Rapid Response services.

Pinpoint where the search is breaking down

Ask a career counselor to review your resume and target roles alongside local demand and any skill gaps. The pattern in your search can help focus that conversation; these are practical diagnostic starting points, not guarantees about the cause.

  • Few or no callbacks: Ask whether your resume clearly matches the roles you are targeting and whether those roles are plausible in your local market.
  • Interviews but no offers: Request interview practice and structured feedback on how you present your experience.
  • Very few suitable openings: Discuss local labor-market information, adjacent roles, and whether targeted training could help.

Ask about referrals, informational interviews, employer research, job fairs, job banks, networking, and job clubs or support groups. The Department of Labor’s job-seeker guidance also points to resume preparation and job-search methods. CareerOneStop can help you find local job-search assistance; libraries and local job clubs may also offer computers, workshops, or connections, depending on the area.

Consider training only after checking the fit

A layoff does not automatically mean you need a new career or a paid course. Before committing time or money, ask a workforce counselor whether local employers are seeking the skills a program teaches, what the program costs and offers, whether you may qualify for training support, and whether the schedule fits your financial runway. Compare the program’s quality and likely relevance to the roles you want. Workforce agencies can discuss options, but no training choice guarantees placement.
