How to Limit Bandwidth for People Sharing Your Starlink Connection

Starlink’s standard router settings do not document per-device speed caps. A compatible third-party router can add rate limits, but the exact model and Starlink kit determine setup.

Starlink’s documented router settings do not include a per-device upload or download speed cap. To set a real ceiling for one person or device, connect a third-party router that explicitly supports per-client bandwidth control or speed limits. Starlink’s client-pause feature can block a device temporarily, while QoS priority may favor selected devices when the network is busy; neither is the same as a maximum speed limit.

Choose the right kind of control

What you want Control to look for What it does
Set a maximum upload or download rate for a device Per-device Bandwidth Control, Speed Limit, traffic shaping, or rate limit Sets a ceiling, if the specific router model supports that feature.
Temporarily stop a device from using the connection Starlink app client pause Pauses access; it does not set a lower speed ceiling. See Starlink’s router settings.
Favor some devices when the connection is congested QoS priority May allocate more bandwidth to selected devices when the network is overloaded; it is not necessarily a hard cap. See TP-Link’s QoS explanation.

Starlink lists app settings such as Wi-Fi name and password, separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, content filtering, client pausing, and bypass mode. Its support page does not list per-device rate caps, MAC filtering, or port forwarding as router features. Check the current Starlink router settings documentation for the kit you use.

What to check in a third-party router

Confirm it sets a maximum, not just priority

Look for documentation that says the router can set maximum upload and download speeds per client or device. A feature called QoS may only prioritize traffic; the name alone does not prove that it imposes a ceiling. TP-Link documents a Bandwidth Control feature on supported routers that can set minimum and maximum upload and download speeds for a single client IP or an IP range. Feature names and availability vary by model, so verify the exact model and hardware revision in its current documentation: TP-Link Bandwidth Control.

Check how rules identify devices

Some rate-limit rules target a client IP address. TP-Link recommends a static client IP or address reservation so the rule continues to apply to the intended device. If you set a rule for an IP range, the clients in that range share the configured bandwidth; that is different from giving each device in the range an individual allowance.

  • 🔌 Advanced Connectivity: Supports both wired (Ethernet) and wireless setup to expand your Starlink mesh network seamlessly.
  • 🧩 Easy Integration: Works with your existing Starlink system (excluding Gen 1); ideal for adding extra mesh nodes.
  • 🛠️ Versatile Installation: Mount on the wall or place on a table. Includes power supply, mounting stand, screws, and drywall anchors.
  • 📶 Optimized Performance: Best placed within two rooms of the main router; avoid obstructions like concrete walls and metal appliances.
  • 📱 Mesh Compatibility: Compatible with Starlink Gen 2 Router, Starlink Gen 3 Router, Starlink Mini Router, and Starlink Mini Kit. Not compatible for wireless mesh networking with Starlink Gen 1 routers or third-party mesh systems.

Consider throughput and complexity

Compare whether the router can target an individual device or a group, how it keeps the target identity stable, how many clients it can manage, and whether shaping affects overall throughput. Ubiquiti documents UniFi traffic shaping and Wi-Fi speed limits for devices and networks, but notes that certain QoS actions disable gateway hardware offloading and may reduce total throughput; the impact varies with the device and traffic conditions. This is a product-family feature, not confirmation that every UniFi model is suitable for every home. See Ubiquiti’s UniFi QoS and Traffic Shaping documentation.

Connect the router to Starlink

First identify your Starlink kit and its Ethernet options. Starlink’s connection instructions say a Gen 2 router requires an Ethernet adapter, while certain Enterprise and Performance kits can connect directly through their power supply. Requirements vary by kit, so use the instructions for your exact hardware rather than assuming every Starlink router has the same ports.

Starlink’s app bypass mode disables Starlink router Wi-Fi so an external router manages the network; some setups require bypass mode. Starlink cautions: “We cannot guarantee performance or compatibility with third-party networking equipment.” Read its third-party router guidance before changing the connection. An Ethernet adapter, when required, only provides a connection; it does not limit bandwidth by itself.

Set and verify a device limit

  1. Identify the kit and router generation. Confirm whether your Starlink setup has native Ethernet or needs an adapter, and check whether its instructions call for bypass mode.
  2. Choose the intended outcome. Use client pause to block access temporarily, a documented per-device rate-limit feature to impose a ceiling, or priority QoS if you only want to favor a device during congestion.
  3. Verify the third-party router’s exact model. Check its current official manual for per-device maximum upload and download speeds. Do not assume a feature is available across every model in a product family.
  4. Connect according to the kit instructions. Use Ethernet and enable bypass mode only as directed for your Starlink setup.
  5. Make the target stable and set the limits. If the router’s rule relies on a client IP, reserve that device’s address or otherwise ensure its address will not change. Enter the desired upload and download ceilings in the router’s control.
  6. Test the result. Check speeds from the limited device and observe whether other devices can still use the connection as intended. If performance worsens or troubleshooting is needed, temporarily remove third-party equipment and compare with Starlink-provided equipment; Starlink’s troubleshooting guidance recommends this to help isolate third-party causes.

Limits of the available guidance

There is no single set of Starlink speed figures or router settings that applies to every location and kit in the cited documentation. Avoid choosing a cap based on a generic claim about typical Starlink speeds: the appropriate ceiling depends on the connection and how people use it. Start with a limit that addresses the sharing problem, then adjust based on measured results on your network. Router software and kit requirements can change, so recheck the official support pages and the model’s latest manual when configuring or buying equipment.
