For an integration using a Google OAuth app, review its requested scopes in the Google Admin console and set the narrowest app-access policy that supports the task: selected scopes, unrestricted access to selected services, or blocked access. Don’t assume every product called an “AI agent” uses OAuth, and don’t confuse third-party app controls with Google’s separate Gemini settings.
First identify how the agent connects
“AI agent” describes what a tool does, not how it authenticates. These steps apply to integrations that use a Google OAuth app. A particular product might instead use a service account, delegated access, or another mechanism; check the vendor’s integration documentation and the tenant’s Admin console before changing policy.

In the Admin console, open Security > Access and data control > API controls, then review the configured and accessed apps. Find the integration by its app name and OAuth client ID. Google’s app-access page shows requested services and scopes for accessed apps. For the permission details, inspect the app itself: the scope list shown while changing access may include scopes the app has ever requested and may not represent its current configuration.

Google’s app-access controls offer four levels. Their differences matter: “Trusted” is not a least-access setting, while “Specific Google data” lets an administrator choose scopes.

For an agent that needs only a defined task, start with Specific Google data and allow only the scopes the task needs. If you cannot grant selected scopes and instead want to keep certain services off-limits, use Limited with service restrictions. Choose Blocked to deny the app Google data access. Avoid treating Trusted as a convenience default: it permits access to restricted services too. Google documents these controls in Control which apps access Google Workspace data.
Restrict only the operations the task requires
Google documents service restrictions and additional high-risk OAuth scope restrictions for Gmail, Drive, Docs, and Chat. Review both the service and the scope: an agent’s ability to read content is different from its ability to modify, send, or delete it. Grant the least access needed for the approved workflow rather than enabling a whole service by default.

- For a Drive-related task, determine whether it needs to view files, edit them, or perform another operation.
- For a Gmail-related task, distinguish reading messages from sending or changing them.
- For Docs or Chat, check whether the task requires access at all and whether its scope allows more than the intended action.
These examples are a way to assess need, not a promise that every operation has a matching individual switch. Use the actual scopes shown for the app and Google’s available controls.
Apply the policy to the right organizational units
Where only some teams need the integration, scope the policy to the relevant organizational units instead of making a broad organization-wide change. Before saving, review the existing organizational-unit policies and how inheritance applies. Do not assume that adding a top-level policy automatically overrides a more specific setting.

App access control requires the Security settings administrator privilege. Google lists this in its administrator privilege definitions.
Roll out the restriction and validate the impact
Restricting a Google service can stop previously installed apps that are not trusted and revoke their tokens. Plan the change around the affected users and the integration’s required workflow; then check whether the approved task still works.

- Record the app name, OAuth client ID, users or organizational units affected, and the app’s configured scopes.
- Apply the selected app-access level and service or scope restrictions to the intended organizational units.
- Test the agent’s approved workflow with an affected account, checking that required actions work and unapproved access is denied.
- Use the app details and policy configuration to validate the result. The accessed-app list can take time to reflect token changes, so do not rely on that list alone immediately after rollout.
Handle Gemini and device controls separately
Google’s built-in Gemini features
Gemini’s access is governed separately from a third-party OAuth app. Google says Gemini generally has the same Workspace data access as the user. For example, owner restrictions on copying or downloading Drive content can affect Gemini access, and delegated Gmail inbox content is excluded. Administrators can restrict Gemini entirely or limit some or all of its Workspace data access. The Gemini app on/off setting does not control every Gemini feature embedded in Workspace services. Use the Gemini app access setting for the Gemini app, and account for embedded features separately.
Unsafe-device protections
Device-risk controls address a different question from OAuth scopes. Google’s Security advisor for app access protection documents settings that can warn about or block access from specified unsafe devices; Google also points administrators to Context-Aware Access for further device-based controls. These measures do not replace limiting the data an OAuth app is permitted to request.
