The most efficient general approach is to make each expedition advance more than one skill: gather resources in the highest-level area you can safely handle, then process those materials into artisan XP. Check the skill tree first so your effort is aimed at useful unlocks, and let Agility progress during on-foot travel. There is no verified single fastest route or XP-per-hour ranking for every skill.
Choose a useful level target before you start
Skill XP comes from performing actions associated with that skill. Jagex gives examples such as chopping trees for Woodcutting and building bases, structures, and furnishings for Construction. Levels can unlock abilities, spells, traits, or buffs, so the worthwhile target is usually a milestone that helps with what you want to do next—not an arbitrary level.

- Press K to open the Skills menu.
- Select a skill to see how much XP remains until its next level.
- Inspect that skill’s tree and identify the unlocks at the levels you are considering.
- Pick a practical milestone, then choose activities that award XP to the relevant skill.
Jagex explains the menu and unlock system in its Skills and the Skill Tree support article. It does not provide a complete route guide or official XP-per-hour table there.
Turn gathering trips into a progression loop
Plan to use the materials you collect. A general recommendation from AllThings.How’s September 26, 2026 guide is to gather in the highest-level region you can survive, then put the haul to work through activities such as smelting, crafting, or cooking. This lets a trip develop gathering and artisan skills rather than leaving its resources unused.

These are practical recommendations, not experimentally verified rates. The best region and recipes depend on your current unlocks and game state; no single route is established as fastest for all players.
Let travel advance Agility
A September 2026 guide reports that running on foot awards Agility XP. When it suits the journey, travel between tasks on foot instead of treating movement as dead time. The guide also recommends completing each newly unlocked course for its milestone reward, then repeating the best course available to you. Course names and exact thresholds are patch-sensitive, so check the live game rather than relying on an old list.

Set priorities around your goal
There is no universal skill order that is best for every character. A progression guide updated September 17, 2026 suggests different priorities for quest progress, long-term base building, and magic. Use the goal you care about to choose which unlocks to pursue, while checking that your plan has the resources it needs.

- Building: give more attention to skills that help you develop your base and make the structures or furnishings you want.
- Magic: plan for rune supplies as well as the skill unlock. Jagex says magic becomes available through the tutorial spellbook or by unlocking a first spell through a skill, and spells require runes. Its Using Magic article explains the dependency but does not give an efficient Runecrafting route.
Avoid focusing so narrowly on one skill that you stall for want of supporting supplies. The September guide points to dependencies such as rune supplies for magic and the relationship between farming and cooking for food progression.

Keep level 99 in perspective
AllThings.How reports that each of the twelve skills in its September 26, 2026 guide reaches level 99 at 1,000,000 total XP, with 657,432 XP required for levels 93–99. These are figures attributed to that secondary guide, not a complete XP curve published by Jagex. They illustrate why level 99 is a long-term target rather than a sensible default for efficient near-term progression; check the next unlock you want instead.

Jagex’s June 23, 2026 announcement described the September 15, 2026 version 1.0 launch across PC and consoles as planned following the Umbral Sands update. That release announcement is context, not a live patch log, and skill rosters, routes, XP values, and planned additions can change. A May 15, 2026 roadmap discussed Agility traversal challenges and said Prayer was moving to a winter update; those dated plans do not establish present availability. A September 2026 secondary guide said Prayer was not yet in the game at that time. Confirm the current roster and unlocks in your game.
