Microsoft Teams’ reported meeting-label update distinguishes people in the organizer’s organization from trusted external participants and other outside attendees. In the planned in-meeting display, internal participants had no label, trusted outsiders were marked “External,” and other outsiders were marked “Unverified.” That March 2024 rollout timing was a forecast reported by Petri—not confirmation of current availability in every tenant.
What the three meeting participant labels mean
Petri reported on February 21, 2024, that Teams planned to show labels according to a participant’s relationship with the meeting organizer or organization. The labels describe that relationship in the meeting interface; they are not an identity-verification result.

| Participant’s relationship | Reported in-meeting label |
|---|---|
| Belongs to the organizer’s organization | No label |
| Outside the organization, with a trusted relationship to the organizer or organization | External |
| Outside the organization, without the relevant trusted relationship | Unverified |
Petri described possible “Unverified” participants as Entra ID users without explicit external access setup, personal Microsoft account users, and people joining without a Microsoft ID. These are examples in the report, not a guarantee that every tenant classifies every such attendee identically. Petri’s February 21, 2024 report attributes Microsoft’s explanation as saying that participants outside the organizer’s organization who are configured as a trusted relationship “will continue to be termed as External.”
Where the labels were expected to appear
The report said organizers and participants would see the labels in in-meeting areas including the lobby, participant roster, and meeting chat. It forecast that this in-meeting experience would roll out in March 2024. The report also mentioned a possible later expansion to other meeting areas but gave no date for it.

- SUPPORT WORK FROM ANYWHERE WITH SYNC: Whether employees are in the office, at home, or somewhere else, Sync device management software helps everyone stay connected by letting you ensure their Logitech video collaboration personal devices are being used and up to date.
- Open workspaces are great for collaboration, but not so great when the noise around you makes it hard to concentrate. Active noise cancellation substantially reduces unwanted ambient sound, so you can get focused and stay focused.
- Great for Music and Talking with immersive sound for listening to music and a noise-canceling mic that ensures that your voice is heard on the other end of a call—not the noise around you.
- On ear controls to adjust volume, start/end calls, and invoke Teams. Plus button controls for power, active noise cancellation (ANC), wireless Bluetooth pairing, and mute on/off or use the flip-to-mute mic feature.
- Certified for Microsoft Teams ensures it’s easy to pick-up or answer Teams meetings, calls, messages, and notifications with a single press to the Teams button. Or apply a longer touch to invoke Cortana voice skills.
That schedule is historical: the available sources do not establish current behavior for every tenant, region, or Teams client. Check the experience in your organization rather than assuming all users see the same labels today.
Why the meeting-invite change is different
Microsoft’s official Teams release notes list a February 22, 2024 “Meeting invite improvements” item describing removal of the “External” label and support for an optional administrator-configurable label. That entry concerns meeting invites, not the in-meeting lobby, roster, or chat labels described above. It therefore does not show that the in-meeting update was canceled or reversed.

What “Unverified” does—and does not—tell you
In the reported design, “Unverified” indicated that an outside participant did not have the relevant trusted relationship with the organizer or organization. It should not be read as proof that someone’s identity is false or that the person is unsafe. Conversely, “External” does not guarantee that a participant is safe. The report describes displayed labels, not a change to authentication, meeting access, or security controls.
