One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchLeveling a 3D printer bed and setting its nozzle offset are related but different jobs: leveling or mesh compensation accounts for the bed’s shape, while the Z offset sets the nozzle’s height above the print surface. Run your printer’s own calibration flow, then adjust the first layer by its printed appearance—not by copying another printer’s offset value.
Bed leveling and Z offset: what each adjustment does
Bed leveling may mean mechanically tramming the bed, probing it to build a compensation mesh, or using both methods. These address differences in bed position or shape across the print area. The Z offset controls the nozzle’s vertical distance from the surface at the printer’s reference position. A usable mesh does not guarantee that the nozzle is at the right height for a first layer.

Names, sensors, menu paths, and whether an adjustment is saved vary by printer and firmware. Use the manual for your exact model to home the printer, tram or probe the bed, generate a mesh, and find its offset controls. Prusa’s first-layer calibration instructions and Live Adjust Z guidance describe Prusa procedures; those controls should not be treated as universal.
Prepare the printer and surface
- Identify the setup. Check the printer model and firmware, probe or leveling system, nozzle, and installed print surface. Find the maker’s instructions for the calibration and offset controls on that setup.
- Prepare the surface as its maker directs. Make sure a removable sheet is seated correctly and that no debris is trapped between it and the heatbed. Cleaning methods depend on the plate coating. For the steel sheet covered in Prusa’s Bed Level Correction instructions, Prusa specifies isopropyl alcohol of 90% or higher; follow the care guidance for your own surface rather than applying that instruction to every plate.
- Run the printer’s applicable bed calibration. Complete required mechanical tramming, probing, or mesh generation using the model-specific procedure. Establish the printer’s baseline first-layer calibration before making regional corrections.
- Print the built-in first-layer test, if available. It gives you an actual extruded line to assess. There is no single Z-offset number or nozzle-to-bed gap that applies reliably across printers: sensor position and machine geometry differ.
Set the nozzle offset from the first-layer pattern
Watch the line as it prints and change the offset a little at a time, using the direction specified for your printer. On the Prusa Live Adjust Z controls documented in the Prusa instructions, a more-negative value brings the nozzle closer to the bed. Other firmware may use a different control or convention.

| What the line looks like | What it suggests | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Rounded, separated, or showing gaps between neighboring lines | The nozzle may be too high. | Lower it cautiously in small increments, then inspect the next lines. |
| Evenly flattened, with adjacent lines meeting and no gaps or raised ridges | The first-layer height is in a useful range. | Stop adjusting when the surface is smooth and consistent. |
| Very flat, ridged, scraped, or translucent | The nozzle may be too low. | Raise it in small increments. Do not keep lowering it to force adhesion. |
A pattern that looks right is more useful than a copied offset value. A nozzle set too low can restrict plastic flow and damage the sheet; use the pattern to find an even line rather than pushing the nozzle toward the surface indefinitely. Prusa’s calibration guidance explains how to assess its first-layer test.
When the center is right but edges or corners are not
A global Z offset raises or lowers the nozzle reference; it does not correct every regional difference in bed shape. If the center prints well but an edge or corner does not, check that the sheet is clean, seated, straight, and undamaged. Then inspect or rerun the printer’s supported mesh or regional correction rather than changing a global offset to compensate for one area.

Prusa’s Bed Level Correction feature is documented for MINI, MK3, and MK3.5 families. For that feature, Prusa gives a correction limit of ±100 µm and suggests adjustments of 10 µm at a time. Those figures apply to the named Prusa feature, not to other printers or firmware.
Troubleshoot first-layer problems without overcorrecting
The line has gaps or does not stick
First check that the surface is clean and properly installed. A line that is rounded or separated can mean the nozzle is too high, but if the calibration pattern is already even, look for other causes such as contamination, bed or XYZ calibration, print settings, or under-extrusion. Lowering the offset indefinitely will not fix those problems.

The line is scraped, ridged, or translucent
The nozzle may be too low. Raise it gradually and check whether the filament flows and the surface becomes even. Excessive lowering can obstruct extrusion or harm the print surface.
Different areas print differently
Check sheet seating and condition, then use the printer’s supported mesh or regional bed correction. Do not treat a difference from one part of the bed to another as proof that the whole nozzle offset needs changing.

The nozzle or print head has changed
Re-run first-layer calibration after a nozzle change or major assembly change. The nozzle’s position relative to the probe or sensor affects the machine’s reference. Prusa lists these changes among the reasons to recalibrate in its first-layer calibration instructions.

Check how your printer saves offset changes
Do not assume a live adjustment, firmware setting, and slicer setting have the same persistence. Some Prusa models named in the Live Adjust Z documentation use a LoadCell to calibrate the first layer automatically. On those models, the documented live adjustment while printing is temporary, while a slicer Z offset applies to the G-code where it is set. Check the instructions for your exact model before relying on a change for later prints.
