MCP connects the agent to the tool; your repository remains the source of the documents and their permissions. For a protected HTTP MCP server, use the protocol’s OAuth authorization model, validate that each token is intended for the MCP server, and use a separate credential if the server calls an upstream document API.
How MCP fits into identity-document access
The MCP host runs or coordinates the AI application. Its MCP client sends requests to the MCP server, which mediates access to the document repository. In the protocol’s authorization model, a protected MCP server acts as an OAuth resource server, while the client acts as an OAuth client on behalf of a resource owner. The server must authorize a request before using its tools to return sensitive data. See the MCP authorization specification.

MCP does not define your repository, decide which documents a person may access, or prescribe a universal document schema, field policy, or scope name. Those policies must come from the actual document system and the user or agent authorization model.
Design a read tool with limited reach
Expose a specific read operation rather than general access to a repository. Its inputs should identify only documents the caller is permitted to request, and its output should contain only fields needed for the task. Read-only access prevents the tool from changing source records, but it does not by itself prevent unnecessary disclosure or control what the host does with returned data.

- Decide which users, agent identities, and document permissions govern each request.
- Use an appropriate scope or role to authorize the tool operation.
- Define field-level filtering as an application policy; OAuth scopes and roles do not automatically provide a document-field privacy policy.
- Treat document contents as untrusted input. MCP security research identifies risks such as content injection, data-driven exfiltration, compromised servers, tool poisoning, and privilege escalation; limit tool authority and audit access accordingly. These are risk observations, not additional normative protocol requirements.
Microsoft Entra’s MCP guide illustrates delegated OAuth scopes for user-authorized access and application roles for an agent identity. Those are choices for that identity-provider setup, not universal requirements. See Microsoft Entra authentication for MCP servers.
Protect a remote MCP server with OAuth
For a protected HTTP-based MCP server, configure OAuth authorization and publish the protected-resource metadata needed for clients to discover the appropriate authorization server. The server should verify the access token before executing a protected tool. OpenAI’s developer guidance also says that customer-specific data should be authenticated; some plugin MCP servers can operate anonymously in read-only mode, but that is not an appropriate assumption for identity documents. See OpenAI’s remote MCP authentication guidance.

- READY WHENEVER YOU ARE – The DS-640 mobile scanner is powered via an included micro USB 3. 0 cable allowing you to use it even where there is no outlet available. Plug it into you PC or laptop and you are ready to scan.
- WORKS YOUR WAY – Use the Brother free iPrint&Scan desktop app for scanning to multiple “Scan-to” destinations like PC, Network, cloud services, Email and OCR. (2) Supports Windows, Mac and Linux and TWAIN/WIA for PC/ICA for Mac/SANE drivers. (3)
- OPTIMIZE IMAGES AND TEXT – Automatic color detection/adjustment, image rotation (PC only), bleed through prevention/background removal, text enhancement, color drop to enhance scans. Software suite includes document management and OCR software. (4)
At a minimum, the server’s authorization checks should confirm the issuer, audience or resource, expiry, and required scope or role. A token issued for a different service must not be accepted as permission to read documents from this MCP server. The MCP TypeScript SDK’s serving guide describes a verifier-based approach and scope checks; it also warns that expiry information must be populated. Its `expectedResource` compatibility note is version-specific, so check the SDK version in use before relying on that option. See the TypeScript SDK server guide.

Keep MCP and upstream credentials separate
If the MCP server calls a separate identity-document API, it must authenticate to that API with a distinct credential issued for the upstream service. Do not forward the token received from the MCP client. The MCP security guidance is explicit: “MCP servers MUST NOT pass through the token it received from the MCP client.” This separation prevents a token intended for the MCP server from being treated as authorization for another service. See MCP authorization security considerations.

Protect credentials and the authorization flow using the applicable safeguards, including HTTPS, secure token storage, short-lived access tokens, refresh-token rotation for public clients, PKCE, and exact redirect-URI validation. Which safeguards apply depends on the client, server, and authorization provider.
Implementation sequence
- Map access rules. Identify the document repository and define which user or agent may read which documents and fields.
- Build a bounded tool. Expose a read-only operation with a narrow input schema and limited output fields; enforce document and field rules in the application.
- Configure HTTP authorization. Set up OAuth and protected-resource metadata so clients can find the authorization server.
- Verify every request. Before running the tool, validate token issuer, intended audience or resource, expiry, and the scope or role required for that operation.
- Use an upstream credential. If the server calls a document API, obtain and use a separate credential intended for that API rather than forwarding the MCP client token.
- Log with restraint. Record access decisions and invocation metadata without storing full identity-document contents or credentials.
- Review host data handling. Check the selected host’s retention and data-use settings before exposing sensitive documents.
Authentication does not settle retention or compliance
Authentication determines who may call the server; it does not establish what a particular AI host logs, stores, or uses. The general MCP and OpenAI guidance does not settle those behaviors for every host or deployment. Review the actual host configuration and applicable provider documentation, and return only the fields required for the task.

These authorization patterns also do not establish that a specific repository, host, or identity provider meets the legal or regulatory requirements for a particular jurisdiction or document type. Confirm consent, retention, field-access, and compliance requirements for the actual deployment before launch.
