You can use your iPhone to find and review lessons, listen or read in a format that works for you, and keep practice sessions focused. The key is to use it as a learning aid—not just a place to watch explanations. Choose a small goal, study a short lesson, then try to recall or perform what you learned before checking the source.
Turn a broad ambition into a small, observable goal
“Learn guitar” is too broad to guide a useful session. A goal such as “play this chord change smoothly” gives you something specific to attempt and check. For a subject you are reading about, “remember ten key terms” is more concrete than “master biology.” These are examples, not prescribed targets; choose an outcome that fits your skill and starting point.

A practical goal should make it clear what you will do, not just what you will consume. For example, you might aim to explain an idea in your own words, answer a question without looking, or perform a movement you have just watched.
Choose one lesson that matches the goal
Use a book, course, demonstration, or instructor that teaches the specific thing you want to do. The iPhone can deliver the material, but the right format depends on the skill: a written explanation may suit a concept, while a demonstration may help with a physical technique. Avoid collecting multiple sources before you have tried one; switching between lessons can take time away from practice.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Keep the first portion short enough that you can work with it actively. Read a few pages, watch a short demonstration, or listen to one section, then pause. The aim is to make room for a try—not to finish as much content as possible.
Practice recall or performance, not just rereading
- Study a small piece. Read, watch, or listen to the part that supports your chosen goal.
- Put the lesson aside. Try to recall the main idea, explain it aloud in your own words, answer a question, or perform the action without replaying the demonstration.
- Check your attempt. Return to the source, identify what you missed or did differently, and correct it.
- Try again. Repeat the recall or performance so the session includes practice, not only exposure to the answer.
Research reviews discuss spacing practice over time and retrieving information from memory as evidence-supported learning methods across domains, while noting that implementation should fit the learner and skill (Dunlosky et al., 2013). A study on learning science text found greater meaningful learning from retrieval practice than from elaborative study with concept mapping in that study’s context; it does not establish that retrieval always outperforms every other method for every subject (Karpicke and Blunt, 2011).

Return to the material in later sessions
Instead of relying on one long cram session, come back to the material later and try to retrieve or perform it again. The cited learning review supports spacing, but the sources here do not establish a single ideal interval for everyone or every skill. Use a repeatable routine that fits your schedule, and adjust it to the difficulty of the material and how well you can do it without help.
For a physical or motor skill, use the iPhone to watch a demonstration or review a reminder, then put it down and practice the movement yourself. A screen can show what to try; it cannot substitute for doing the action.

Use iPhone tools to make lessons easier to access
Read or listen with Apple Books
Apple Books on iPhone can hold books, audiobooks, and PDFs, and provides options to change text appearance and reading layout. Availability of books and features varies by country or region. See Apple’s iPhone user guide to reading books for the current controls.
Adjust reading and spoken content for your needs
iPhone accessibility features include spoken text and other ways to adapt reading or interaction. Accessibility Reader offers a customizable reading and listening view. Apple Intelligence enhancements have device, language, and region requirements, so availability is not universal. Apple describes these options in its guide to making text easier to read and Accessibility Reader guide.

Reduce interruptions without mistaking focus for learning
If notifications or other apps make it hard to stay with a lesson, use Focus to reduce interruptions or Guided Access to temporarily keep iPhone in one app. Guided Access can also restrict features or set a session time limit. It is an attention aid, not a proven learning intervention; you still need to practice and check what you know. Apple explains how to set up Guided Access and how to set up Focus.

NIH reported evidence that short rests during practice may help consolidate newly practiced motor skills. In its 2019 account, senior investigator and study co-author Leonardo G. Cohen said, “Everyone thinks you need to ‘practice, practice, practice’ when learning something new. Instead, we found that resting, early and often, may be just as critical to learning as practice,” (NIH, 2019). This finding concerns motor-skill learning; it does not establish a universal break interval for every skill or learner.
