Replicate scripts and schedule files separately: copying files between servers does not update YouTube playlists or scheduled live broadcasts. A standby VPS can take over, but automatic two-host failover needs explicit coordination to prevent both servers from writing conflicting changes.
What needs to be synchronized
There are three distinct things in this setup, and they do not stay in sync through the same mechanism:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Your desired schedule: the canonical record of playlist order, broadcast IDs, planned times, stream associations, and relevant settings.
- YouTube resources: playlist entries are playlist-item resources managed through the YouTube Data API. Scheduled live events use YouTube Live Streaming API broadcast resources associated with stream resources. Playlist order and broadcast scheduling are related operationally, but they are separate YouTube objects. Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API overview and playlist implementation guide describe these API-managed resources.
- Files on your VPS hosts: scripts, local configuration, and media assets. A file-sync tool can distribute these, but cannot apply changes to YouTube by itself.
Choose a single-writer design first
Recommended: active VPS with a standby
Run the reconciliation process on one VPS and prepare the second to take over if the first fails. This is simpler to reason about than letting both servers independently modify YouTube. Keep a clear record of which host is active, and do not start the standby writer until the active one is stopped or reliably fenced off.
Dual-writer failover needs coordination
If either VPS may automatically become active, use a verified leader-election or locking mechanism and decide how to reject stale updates. Without that coordination, both hosts may act on different versions of the schedule or apply conflicting changes. YouTube’s API documentation describes resource operations, not a prescribed two-VPS failover topology; the coordination and recovery behavior are design responsibilities.

Where to keep the canonical schedule
Store the desired schedule in a version-controlled configuration or a durable database. Choose based on how often it changes and how you operate deployments. Include stable YouTube resource identifiers where available, planned times, stream associations, and the settings your controller must preserve. Keep the canonical record distinct from each server’s local copy so that a stale file on the standby cannot silently become the authority.
Build the reconciliation workflow
- Read the canonical desired state. Load the current schedule from its authoritative store, not from whichever VPS happens to be running.
- Read current YouTube state. List the relevant playlist items and inspect the broadcasts and associated streams needed for your workflow. Playlist item listing and writes use the YouTube Data API; playlist writes require OAuth authorization. Consult the playlist item list reference and Live Streaming API overview for the operations and resource details.
- Compare before changing anything. Determine which entries are missing, out of order, or otherwise different from the desired schedule. Apply only the necessary insertions, updates, or deletions rather than blindly replaying every operation.
- Persist identifiers and progress. Record playlist-item IDs and the last successfully reconciled state so a restart can distinguish completed work from pending work. Design and validate retry behavior; do not assume retries are harmless without checking the operation and current state.
- Write the smallest necessary change. Playlist insertion, update, and deletion are API operations, not file-copy actions. For updates, preserve all mutable properties that should remain in place.
- Read back and verify. Confirm that YouTube now reflects the intended playlist order and event details. The playlist item update request can overwrite mutable properties included in its request’s
part; omitted values may be reset or removed. Review the update reference and verify the resulting resource after writing. - Release leadership cleanly. During maintenance or failover, stop or fence the old writer before allowing the standby to reconcile. Persist the latest confirmed state so the new active host starts from a known point.
Replicate VPS files separately
Use file synchronization only for the local material that belongs on both hosts, such as scripts, configuration, or media assets. Rclone’s sync command synchronizes a directory tree from source to destination; it does not synchronize YouTube playlists or broadcasts. See the rclone sync documentation.

- Choose and document the source and destination direction; a reversed command can make the wrong host authoritative.
- Check deletion behavior before production use. Sync may propagate deletions from the source to the destination, so confirm exactly what will be removed.
- While learning or validating a sync command, rclone recommends interactive mode to reduce the chance of accidental loss.
- Keep schedule changes versioned or backed up so you can restore a known-good configuration independently of file synchronization.
Plan API quota and polling frequency
The cited Google for Developers API references list playlistItems.list at 1 quota unit and playlist item insert and update at 50 units each. The references do not state a publication year for these figures; check the current project quota and API documentation before deployment.
| Playlist item operation | Quota cost in the cited reference | Operational implication |
|---|---|---|
playlistItems.list |
1 unit | Useful for reading state before deciding whether a write is needed. |
playlistItems.insert |
50 units | Avoid creating entries that already exist. |
playlistItems.update |
50 units | Do not write unchanged items on every poll. |
These costs are stated in the list reference, insert reference, and update reference. Choose a reconciliation interval based on how quickly changes must reach YouTube, expected write volume, and the quota available to your project.

Troubleshoot common sync failures
The VPS files match, but YouTube does not
File sync only copies local directory contents. Check that the controller actually made the relevant Data API or Live Streaming API calls, and inspect the YouTube resources by reading them back.
Playlist order changes unexpectedly
Compare the canonical order with the playlist-item positions returned by the API. Ensure the controller updates the intended playlist item and position rather than relying on local file order alone.
Rank #4
An update removes or resets a property
Inspect the update request’s part and included mutable properties. The API update semantics can replace properties in the requested part; preserve the values you intend to keep, then read the resource back to verify the result.
Both VPS hosts are issuing writes
Stop one writer and establish which host is authoritative. Review logs and current YouTube state against the canonical schedule before restarting reconciliation. For future failover, enforce a single leader or lock and ensure the previous leader cannot continue writing after losing leadership.
Best Value
Sync unexpectedly deletes destination files
Check rclone source, destination, and deletion behavior before another run. Restore needed files from backup or version control, and validate the command interactively while testing.

API calls fail or quota runs low
Confirm OAuth authorization for playlist writes, review API responses and current project quota, and remove unnecessary repeated writes. The cited operation costs are a reference point, not a substitute for checking your project’s current quota settings.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos playing as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo offers a different approach from operating two VPS controllers: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded video playback to YouTube, not camera streaming. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
