What temperature should your refrigerator be set to?
Use a refrigerator thermometer to check the temperature inside rather than relying only on the control dial. Many refrigerators do not display their actual compartment temperature. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program (DOE FEMP) recommends 36–40°F for the refrigerator and -5–0°F for the freezer in its residential refrigerator guidance. DOE’s 2022 Energy Saver guide gives a slightly different refrigerator range, 35–38°F, and recommends 0°F for a stand-alone freezer for long-term storage. These are recommendations from two DOE sources, not one identical range.

Check your appliance manual for instructions on where and how to measure temperature. Adjust the controls gradually, then allow the appliance time to stabilize before checking again. The goal is to avoid needless overcooling while keeping food at a safe temperature; do not raise the setting beyond safe guidance to chase energy savings.

A loose or damaged gasket can let cold air escape, making the refrigerator run more than necessary. Try the paper test: close the door on a strip of paper or a bill, leaving half outside, then pull it gently. If it slides out easily, inspect the seal and latch at that spot and repeat around the door. A failed test is a reason to investigate, not proof by itself that the gasket is the only problem.
#1 Best Overall
- Multi-function power monitor: Our electric usage monitor can monitor the power (W), electricity(kWh), voltage(V), frequency(Hz), current(A), power factor(PF), unit price($/kWh), total cost($) of your appliances. By switching 8 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The “electricity” mode can calculate and display how much power your appliance uses. And the “total cost” mode will show how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Overload protection: When the loading power of the appliance is over the default overload threshold 1800W, the whole display with backlight and the word “OVERLOAD” will keep flashing to warn the users. Please turn off the appliance for safety concern
- Premium Material: The whole body of our energy meter is made of high-quality ABS material. It makes our home electricity usage monitor more long lasting, fireproof and anti-drop. The standard US socket and plug is suitable for all US standard appliances
- Backlight Display: With white backlight and black words, the LCD display of our home power monitor can display the data clearer and help you to read the data easier no matter day or night. The backlight will only lights up when the device is connected to AC power. If no button is pressed, the backlight turns off automatically after 10 minutes. You can also press the "UP" button to turn off the backlight manually, and press any button to turn on backlight again
- Easy to reset: No reset tool needed, our appliance power usage meter is easy to reset. You can press the “M” button for 5 seconds directly to reset the device. After reset, all cumulative data (electricity quantity, cost) will be cleared, and all settings will be restored to factory settings
Clean the gasket and the surface it meets, and check for visible damage or anything preventing the door from closing fully. If the gasket needs replacement, match the part to the refrigerator’s exact model; a generic-looking seal may not fit or seal properly. DOE’s 2021 Consumer Guide to Kitchen Appliances also recommends checking door seals.
Which everyday habits help a refrigerator use less energy?
- Keep the door closed. Decide what you need before opening it, and avoid leaving it open while putting away groceries or preparing a meal.
- Cover food and liquids. Uncovered items release moisture into the compartment, which can add to the refrigerator’s workload.
- Allow air to circulate. Avoid packing food so tightly that it blocks interior airflow.
- Choose a cooler location. Keep the refrigerator out of direct sunlight and away from heat-producing appliances such as ovens.
- Leave room behind the appliance. A few inches of clearance supports airflow around the refrigerator; follow the installation clearances in the manual.
These measures address avoidable heat and moisture loads. They do not guarantee a particular reduction in electricity use: results depend on the appliance, room conditions, household use, and local electricity rates.

- Smart Cloud Energy Manager: The next-generation WiFi power meter works with the GeniLife app for smart remote monitoring. Whether you're at home or away, you can check real-time energy usage for your refrigerator and other appliances anytime. Reduce unnecessary electricity costs and make every watt count.
- App Data Monitoring: The power meter features a high-precision current sensor and high-resolution real-time sampling. The app displays multiple data metrics including watts/VA, kWh, total runtime, current, and more.
- Clear Cost Tracking: With the GeniLife app, you can view your refrigerator’s electricity usage trends anytime and access cost forecasts by hour, day, week, month, or even a full year—making every dollar spent easy to understand.
- Dual Alerts: Set a customizable overload threshold from 0–3000W. If your refrigerator’s power exceeds the limit, the device triggers audible and visual alarms and sends an instant alert through the app, so you can stay informed even when you’re away.
- Take Control of Your Appliance Energy: With the WiFi power monitoring outlet, you can easily identify high-consumption periods and optimize your refrigerator’s energy usage for greater efficiency. It also works with air conditioners, washing machines, and other household appliances, providing data support for whole-home energy savings.
Does cleaning refrigerator coils save energy?
It may help an older refrigerator keep operating efficiently, but coil maintenance depends on the model. DOE advises keeping condenser coils clean on older models and directs owners to the manual for safe cleaning. Check the manual before moving the appliance, removing a panel, or using a brush or vacuum. Some models have different coil locations or do not call for owner cleaning; do not assume every refrigerator should be cleaned the same way.
If your unit has a manual-defrost freezer, remove frost periodically. DOE and ENERGY STAR’s 2021 kitchen-appliance guide says not to let frost build up beyond one-quarter inch. Follow the manual’s defrosting procedure and keep food safely chilled during the process.

When is replacing a refrigerator worth considering?
If you are shopping for a replacement, compare similar models rather than relying on a single feature or a general savings claim. Check each model’s EnergyGuide label for annual electricity use in kWh and estimated annual operating cost, and compare ENERGY STAR qualification, capacity, freezer configuration, and optional features such as ice and water dispensers. Use your local electricity price when estimating what operating costs mean for your household.
DOE’s 2022 Energy Saver guide says the most efficient refrigerator models are usually 16–20 cubic feet and that larger refrigerators use more energy. It also says top-mounted-freezer models are more efficient than side-by-side or bottom-mounted models. These are useful comparison points, not a rule that configuration alone determines the best refrigerator: choose the capacity and features you actually need, then compare labels across similar models.

- DESIGNED, HOSTED & SUPPORTED IN THE USA: Engineered in the USA with a US-hosted cloud and US-based support. This provides higher security for your data and means you get expert help from a local team that actually built the product
- 5-YEAR PRO VALUE: Your purchase includes 5 full years of AI monitoring and alerts with zero hidden costs or monthly contracts
The same DOE guide says replacing a refrigerator more than 10 years old with a new ENERGY STAR certified model could save hundreds of dollars each year. That is a broad published claim, not a personalized estimate or guaranteed payback. Your actual savings depend on the old unit’s energy use and condition, the replacement’s label, how you use both appliances, and local rates. Estimate costs with the specific EnergyGuide figures before deciding whether replacement makes financial sense. Utility rebates may exist in some locations, but availability varies.
DOE FEMP’s purchasing page notes that its own product comparisons use 2022 federal electricity-price assumptions and a December 2023 ENERGY STAR qualified-product list. Those figures are not a current estimate of an individual household’s bill.
