For sustained or heavy rain, put your phone in a correctly sized, securely sealed waterproof pouch with a clear touchscreen window—or leave it put away until you reach shelter. A phone’s built-in water resistance is model-specific and limited to stated test conditions; it does not guarantee safe use in every downpour. Wet screens may also stop responding, so protecting the phone and keeping it operable are separate concerns.
Before you take your phone out
Check guidance for your exact model
Look up the water-resistance rating and wet-device instructions for your specific phone model, not just its brand or product family. Ratings describe protection under specified test conditions. For IPX8, the manufacturer defines the depth and duration; the rating alone does not establish a universal heavy-rain guarantee. Google explains the limits of these ratings in its IP-rating guide, which notes, “No phone, however, is 100% waterproof.”

Resistance can also diminish with normal wear. Apple, Samsung, and Google warn that aging or wear may reduce protection; cracks, chips, impacts, repairs, or disassembly are reasons to be especially cautious. See the guidance for iPhone, Samsung phones, and Pixel phones.

A zipped inner pocket or sheltered bag pocket can reduce direct exposure during a brief shower, but it is not a waterproof seal. For prolonged rain, use a waterproof pouch made for your phone’s size, or keep the device put away until you are under cover.

How to use a phone in heavy rain
Seal it in a clear-window pouch
Choose a pouch that fits the phone with its case, if you plan to keep the case on. Close it exactly as instructed and check that the closure is fully sealed before going out. Consider whether you can see and operate the screen through the barrier and whether the pouch gives you access to the buttons, camera, speaker, and charging connector you need. A pouch rating and a phone’s built-in rating are different claims; follow each maker’s stated conditions.
For example, T’nB’s product sheet describes the PHBAGWP pouch as IPX8, for phones up to 7 inches, with a transparent screen intended to allow touchscreen use in rain and an adjustable, removable strap. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent heavy-rain test results. Touch response through a pouch can vary, so do not assume every phone and pouch combination will work reliably.

Reduce screen interaction
Even without a pouch, a wet touchscreen may not respond normally. Samsung warns that “The touch screen may not be active if wet.” Set directions or other essentials before entering the rain, and use voice guidance or audio where practical while keeping the phone protected. Avoid repeatedly taking it out to tap or swipe in a downpour.

What to do after the phone gets wet
Dry the outside gently
Wipe the phone with a clean, soft cloth, including around the speaker, microphone, and charging port. Let it dry at room temperature with airflow. Do not use external heat or put swabs, paper, or other objects into a connector; Apple specifically cautions against heat and inserting objects in its wet-device guidance.

Wait before charging or connecting accessories
Do not connect a cable or accessory while the port is wet. Follow your phone maker’s instructions, including any wet-port alert and recommended waiting period. Apple advises that the phone be completely dry before cable charging and specifies waiting at least five hours. That timing is Apple’s instruction, not a universal rule for every phone.
Allow for temporary audio trouble
Moisture around the earpiece, microphone, or speaker can affect sound. Samsung advises drying those areas and the USB connector, then allowing the phone to air-dry before calling because moisture may reduce microphone volume.

What water-resistance ratings do—and do not—tell you
A rating is a model-specific claim based on controlled conditions, not a measure of how long a phone will remain safe in a real storm. For context, Apple lists certain iPhone models rated IP68 as tested at up to six metres for 30 minutes, and older IP67 models as tested at up to one metre for 30 minutes. These are controlled-test specifications for particular models, not a guarantee of heavy-rain performance or values that apply to every iPhone. Check Apple’s current model guidance for the phone you own.
