Microsoft says it is expanding nature-inspired landscaping to more than 20 data center sites across the United States and Germany. The work can make facilities less visually prominent, but it is broader than camouflage: projects are tailored to local conditions and may include native habitat, wetlands, stream restoration, stormwater features, and community amenities.
What Microsoft means by “camouflage”
Visual screening is one part of the approach: trees and other vegetation can help a data center blend into its surroundings. Microsoft describes the larger effort as biomimicry-informed design—learning from local ecosystems to shape landscapes around its facilities. The company says its options are customized rather than applied as one standard package. Kaitlin Chuzi, Microsoft’s director of Global Land Strategy, put it this way: “The best thing about it is that we don’t have a one-size-fits-all solution set; we actually have a menu of options that are going to be customized to each place.”

The 20-plus figure in Microsoft’s September 16, 2026 account refers to sites across the United States and Germany. It does not mean that every site is a wetland or has the same planting plan.

| Middenmeer, Netherlands | Native trees and shrubs, flower-rich pollinator habitat along a fence and highway, and an outdoor area for employees. Microsoft’s account says the pilot began in early March 2022 with 150 native trees and 2,300 square meters of shrubs, grasses, and groundcovers. |
| Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin | Work with the Root-Pike Watershed Initiative Network to reestablish open wetlands, native prairie, and forested riparian buffers. Plans also include restoring straightened streams to winding channels, with the stated aims of improving aquatic habitat, reducing erosion, and filtering runoff before it reaches Lake Michigan. |
| East Point, Georgia | A planned walking trail and native plants and trees, including mature and faster-growing varieties intended to screen the campus and help it blend into its setting. |
| Bedburg, Germany | Native habitat, wetland and stormwater features, ecological connectivity corridors, and visual screening. |
| Mecklenburg County, Virginia | Microsoft says more than 230 acres were designated for restoration and conservation in 2022. The project later restored 185 acres of native pollinator habitats and planted more than 25,000 trees to establish 45 acres of forested buffers. Community engagement and local environmental groups helped shape the project. |
The Middenmeer pilot: a landscape shaped by local ecology
Microsoft says the first project began near Middenmeer in 2022. Its earlier account describes local ecological research into habitat types, biodiversity, soil health, water and air quality, and agricultural practices. Community listening also identified fitting into the surrounding landscape as a shared priority. Microsoft’s ecosystems overview separately reports 150 trees and 2,300 square meters of native greenery at Middenmeer, without stating a year on that page.
Chuzi, then identified by Microsoft as director of Biomimicry, described the project’s intent: “This project isn’t just about sticking plants in the ground; it’s about learning from nature and finding ways to make our datacenters fit into the landscape. We expect the native plants we chose will mirror a healthy, resilient ecosystem and support biodiversity, improve storm water control, and prevent erosion while reflecting the natural beauty of Noord-Holland.” Microsoft’s September 2026 account says the plantings have grown taller over four years.

What the projects are intended to achieve—and what is established
Microsoft presents the landscapes as ways to support biodiversity, provide habitat, improve stormwater handling, reduce erosion, filter runoff, and make campuses less visually prominent. These are project goals and reported activities, not independent proof of net ecological impact. The available accounts do not provide an independent, site-by-site evaluation of outcomes across the more-than-20-site program.

That describes a planning and measurement tool; it is not, by itself, a published finding that the sites achieved particular ecological results.

Related measures are not part of every landscape project
Microsoft’s broader data-center materials also describe measures such as converting some stormwater ponds into constructed wetlands, using UV glass intended to help birds detect and avoid buildings, green walls, and permeable pavement. These are examples from the company’s wider approach; they should not be assumed to appear at every site in the 20-plus landscaping program.

Because the plans vary by place, useful questions are whether the selected habitat fits local conditions, what water or runoff function it is meant to serve, how it connects with nearby habitat, whether local communities helped shape it, and how outcomes will be measured over time. A screen of trees may reduce a facility’s visibility, but visual blending alone does not establish ecological benefit.
