Build a stable baseline before players join
Long-running servers usually become unreliable through small changes: a plugin adds work to every tick, a world grows beyond the original memory plan, or an update is applied without a tested rollback. Establish a known-good baseline first, then change one variable at a time.

Use Paper with a supported Java runtime
Most current optimization guidance assumes the Paper family of servers. For a new school-term deployment, use Java 21 unless the specific Minecraft and plugin versions you have selected require another supported runtime. Keep the server jar, Java runtime, plugins and operating system on versions that their maintainers support; mixing an old plugin with a new server is a common source of errors that look like “lag.”
Keep the server in its own directory and launch it from there. A minimal Linux launch command is:

Replace both values with the heap you have deliberately allocated after leaving enough memory for the operating system, Java’s native memory, disk cache and any other services on the machine. On Windows, the same Java arguments can be placed in a start.bat file; on Linux, put them in a systemd service or a controlled shell script so the process restarts only after you have reviewed why it stopped.
Set a fixed heap, then size it to the machine
Setting -Xms (initial heap) and -Xmx (maximum heap) to the same value prevents the JVM from repeatedly resizing its managed heap while the server is running. A fixed heap does not create memory, however. If the host starts swapping, the server can become less responsive even though the Java process appears to have free heap.

- Measure the host’s total memory and what other processes consume.
- Reserve operating-system headroom instead of assigning all physical RAM to Java.
- Increase the heap only when profiling shows allocation or collection pressure and the host still has safe headroom.
- Do not assume that a larger heap automatically improves TPS; long garbage-collection pauses can be the actual cause of a stall.
Apply Aikar’s flags from the live Paper documentation
Aikar’s flags remain the commonly recommended G1 garbage-collector tuning for Java 17/21 Paper-family servers. Use the current reference at docs.papermc.io/paper/aikars-flags, copy the command for your Java and heap tier, and change only -Xms and -Xmx to match your allocation. The reference has a separate tier for heaps above 12 GB.
Do not paste a flag list from an old blog and assume it is identical. Published examples disagree on at least one value, G1ReservePercent (15 in one example and 20 in another). That conflict is precisely why the live Paper page should be your source of truth. Keep a dated copy of the launch command in your server notes so you know which settings were tested.

Choose G1 or ZGC based on the host, not fashion

These are starting points rather than guarantees. Record tick time, memory use and collection pauses for a representative session before deciding that a collector change helped.
Find the real cause of lag before upgrading hardware
“Lag” can mean low TPS, delayed block updates, rubber-banding, or a player’s network latency. Treat those as different symptoms. A server with a healthy tick loop cannot repair a poor connection, and a fast connection cannot compensate for a tick that takes too long.
Profile tick time with spark
Install the spark profiler that matches your server platform and run it while the problem is happening, not only while the server is empty. Look for the tasks consuming the largest share of each tick and note whether the cost is constant or appears during a farm, world-generation burst, or scheduled plugin job. Save the profile link or report with the date, player count and activity so you can compare changes.
- If one plugin dominates the profile, update, reconfigure or temporarily remove that plugin and retest.
- If entity ticking dominates, inspect farms, mob density and chunk-loading behavior before assigning more RAM.
- If world generation dominates, pregenerate the areas players will use during a quiet maintenance window and avoid exploring an unlimited frontier during a peak session.
- If garbage collection pauses dominate, verify heap sizing and host memory pressure, then compare the collector options under the same workload.
A profile is more useful than a single TPS reading because it identifies the work that must finish inside each tick. Keep the baseline profile; otherwise a later change is only a guess.

Reduce distance settings deliberately
View distance controls how far terrain is sent to clients, while simulation distance controls how far active game logic runs. Both increase work as they rise. Lower them gradually, test with the normal number of players, and explain the change to your community before applying it permanently.
Paper’s activation-range settings in paper.yml also determine which entities receive frequent updates. Tune those ranges conservatively: an aggressive reduction can make farms, redstone contraptions or decorative entities appear broken, while an unrestricted range can consume tick time. Change one category, restart, and verify the mechanics players actually use.

Keep a list of installed plugins, their versions, data folders and configuration files. Remove duplicate functionality and disable features nobody uses. A plugin that is harmless on a small world can become expensive after months of chunk growth. When a profile identifies a plugin, check its configuration before replacing it; logging levels, scan intervals and database tasks are often adjustable.
Decide whether hardware is really the next step

Back up the complete server and prove that recovery works
A world-only copy is not a complete backup. Claims, permissions, economy balances and other state may live in plugin folders, configuration files or databases. Restoring only the world can therefore return terrain while leaving land unclaimed or balances at zero.

Include every stateful component
- All world folders, including the Nether and End worlds if they are separate directories.
- The server configuration files, including
server.properties, Paper configuration and permission settings. - Every plugin jar and its data/configuration folder.
- Embedded or external databases used by plugins, exported in a transaction-safe manner.
- Operational files such as allowlists, ban lists, scheduled-task definitions and launch scripts.
Store at least one copy away from the machine running Minecraft. A disk failure, corrupted filesystem or accidental deletion should not destroy both the live server and its backup.
Choose a cadence that matches acceptable loss

Daily automation is a common baseline reported by hosting guides, not a guarantee that every server should use it. Set the interval by asking how much progress your players can afford to lose. A backup that runs while files are being written can be inconsistent, so use the server’s save operation and a short maintenance pause, or a storage snapshot designed for live data.
Perform a restore drill during a quiet window
- Stop the server cleanly and record the exact server, Java and plugin versions.
- Copy the complete server directory to a separate test location; never experiment on the only live copy.
- Restore one dated backup into that location, including plugin data and databases.
- Start the restored instance without players and read the entire log for errors, missing files and database failures.
- Join as an administrator, verify permissions, claims, inventories, economy balances, portals, scheduled jobs and a representative set of worlds.
- Record how long the restore took and any manual steps. Update the runbook while the details are fresh.
A restore test turns “we have backups” into a measured recovery procedure. Repeat it after changing storage, plugins or the backup method.

Prepare a reversible change
Before an update, make a full backup of world folders, server configuration, plugin configuration and plugin jars. Confirm that every required plugin supports the target Minecraft and Paper version; a server can start while a critical plugin silently fails, so read the startup log rather than relying only on the process staying open.
- Announce a maintenance window and stop new players from joining.
- Run a clean save and create the pre-update backup.
- Write down the current jar, Java version, plugin list and launch command.
- Download the target server jar and compatible plugin releases into a separate staging directory.
- Update the staging copy first and keep the original directory untouched for rollback.
Allow the first startup to finish
The first launch after a major update can take longer because world data is converted. Let that process complete; repeatedly restarting can leave a conversion incomplete and make diagnosis harder. Watch the console for a normal completion message, then inspect warnings and stack traces before allowing players back in.
Validate with no players, then with an administrator
- Start the updated server with no players connected.
- Review the log for plugin exceptions, permission errors, data migrations and failed database connections.
- Join with an administrator account and test permissions, claims, inventories, portals, redstone, farms and any custom mechanics your community depends on.
- Check that backups still run and that monitoring or restart services point to the new directory.
- Only then announce availability. If a critical test fails, stop the updated instance and restore the pre-update copy.
Know what auto-update scripts cannot do
Scripts that relaunch Paper with Aikar’s flags can automate process startup, but they do not make Minecraft-version upgrades safe. They cannot verify plugin compatibility, create a tested rollback or decide whether a world conversion completed correctly. Pair any automation with the pre-update backup and validation steps above.
A school-term operating routine
Before the term starts
- Freeze a known-good Paper, Java and plugin combination.
- Capture a spark profile during a realistic group session.
- Confirm that the fixed heap leaves operating-system headroom and that the host is not swapping.
- Set view distance, simulation distance and activation ranges, then test farms and redstone.
- Run a complete backup and restore drill on separate storage.
- Write down who can stop the server, where backups live and how to roll back.
During the term
Keep changes small and scheduled. Review logs after restarts, watch disk space and verify that automated backups are completing rather than merely creating empty files. Profile again when the world, player count or plugin set changes materially. If a setting change improves one activity but harms another, keep the profile and revert instead of accumulating unexplained tweaks.
During breaks and quiet periods
Use low-traffic windows for world maintenance, plugin updates, restore drills and controlled pregeneration. Do not combine several major changes in one maintenance window; separating them preserves a clear rollback point and makes a later regression identifiable.

The decision rule that keeps a term stable
When performance degrades, follow this order: preserve a backup, measure the tick workload, tune configuration and plugins, then reconsider heap or hardware. When changing versions, follow a different order: compatibility check, full backup, staged update, first-start conversion, log review and functional test. This sequence keeps a temporary slowdown from becoming a lost world and keeps a server upgrade reversible.
