How to Keep Your Mac Secure, Backed Up, and Running Well: 4 Tips

Four practical Mac-care habits: update macOS, protect accounts and apps, back up to separate storage, and review storage and battery health.

Keep your Mac safer and in better working order with four habits: install macOS updates, protect your accounts and choose apps carefully, keep an independent backup, and review storage and battery health with macOS’s built-in tools. Menu names can vary by macOS version, so use the closest matching settings on your Mac.

1. Install macOS updates promptly

Updates can add features and fix security issues. Apple calls keeping software up to date one of the most important ways to maintain Mac security. Open System Settings > General > Software Update to check for updates; on older macOS releases, the labels or location may differ. You can also review the available automatic-installation options for macOS updates, system files, and security responses. See Apple’s guide to keeping a Mac up to date.

2. Protect your accounts and choose apps carefully

Use secure passwords and password-protect each account on the Mac. Turn off automatic login so someone cannot reach your account simply by starting the computer. Be deliberate about which apps you install, and avoid software from untrusted sources; do not bypass macOS security prompts to install an app you cannot verify.

macOS includes protections such as Gatekeeper, notarization, and XProtect, which help block or detect harmful software. Apple says XProtect signatures are updated automatically. These defenses reduce risk, but they do not guarantee that every app or download is safe. Apple’s guidance on ways to keep information safe on Mac and its explanation of malware protection in macOS describe these safeguards.

3. Keep a backup separate from your Mac

Use Time Machine, built into macOS, to back up to external storage. A backup stored on a separate drive gives you a copy apart from the Mac’s internal disk and can help restore files, including older or deleted versions. Apple recommends backing up your Mac; its Time Machine guide explains how to set up and use a backup disk.

Cloud syncing can keep files available across devices, but synced files are not necessarily an independent backup: a deletion or unwanted change may also sync. Keep a separate backup copy for files you cannot afford to lose. If a Time Machine disk is nearly full, Apple says a disk with at least twice the Mac’s storage capacity is ideal. See Apple’s Time Machine backup and restore troubleshooting guidance. For setup and recovery basics, consult Apple’s Mac backup overview and backup instructions.

4. Review storage and battery health with built-in tools

Check storage before deleting files

Open System Settings > General > Storage to review what is using space; the path may vary by macOS release. Remove files you no longer need, use the storage optimization options macOS offers, or move large files to external storage. Apple notes that “System Data” is a broad category whose contents vary, so do not treat it as a folder to purge manually. macOS can clear safe caches when it needs space. Follow Apple’s storage-management guidance rather than relying on routine cleaner apps.

Understand battery health on Apple silicon laptops

On Apple silicon Mac laptops, battery health management considers temperature history and charging patterns. Apple says a battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at its maximum cycle count under normal conditions. That is a design statement, not a universal threshold for replacing a battery. Check your Mac’s battery-health status in Battery settings, and refer to Apple’s model-specific information on battery health management for Apple silicon Mac laptops.
