Audio and Video Connectors: What They Are and How to Choose One

An audio/video connector is the physical plug-and-socket connection between devices. The connector’s shape does not, by itself, tell you what signals it carries: the interface and the device’s implementation determine whether it handles audio, video, both, or another function.

Connector, interface, and signal: what is the difference?

A connector is the physical joining point—the plug and matching socket. An interface describes how a connection carries and handles a signal. The signal is the actual audio, video, or other information moving between devices. These terms are related, but they are not interchangeable.

That distinction matters because similar-looking ports can have different capabilities, and one connector shape can support different functions depending on the device. Check the device specifications and port markings rather than relying on appearance alone. USB-IF’s USB Type-C Cable and Connector Specification describes the physical connector ecosystem; it does not mean every USB-C port supports every possible mode.

Which audio and video connector types are common?

HDMI

HDMI is a digital audio/video interface commonly used to connect sources such as computers and media players to TVs, monitors, projectors, and AV equipment. Check that both devices and the cable support the resolution, refresh rate, and features you need. HDMI’s Specification Overview identifies HDMI 2.2 as the current version on the page at the time reflected by the cited source.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

DisplayPort

DisplayPort is a digital display interface used especially with computers and monitors. Depending on the source, adapter, and destination input, a DisplayPort output can connect to a display with DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI, or VGA. VESA says DisplayPort 2.1b was announced in January 2025; the source device and accessories still determine which capabilities are available in a particular connection.

USB-C carrying video

USB-C describes a reversible physical connector, not a promise of video output. A device must support a video mode such as DisplayPort Alt Mode or HDMI Alt Mode for video to pass through its USB-C port. VESA explains that “DisplayPort™ over USB-C™ enables the USB Type-C™ connector and cable to support the DisplayPort interface for audio/video (AV) transport capability” in its DisplayPort FAQ. HDMI also describes its supported approach in HDMI Alt Mode USB Type-C.

RCA composite video and stereo audio

RCA-style connections are found on legacy consumer equipment. In a composite setup, one connection carries the video signal, while separate connections typically carry left and right audio. RCA jacks can also serve other purposes, including component video or analog audio, so identify the function of each jack rather than assuming it from the connector alone. Sony’s guide to TV video inputs distinguishes RF, composite, component, and HDMI connections.

3.5 mm and TRS audio

3.5 mm plugs are common for headphones and other audio connections. A TRS plug has tip, ring, and sleeve contacts, but that wiring does not specify one universal use: depending on the equipment, it may carry stereo unbalanced audio or balanced mono. Contact count and device wiring matter. Focusrite’s analogue connections guide explains common audio wiring distinctions.

XLR audio

XLR connectors are common in recording, live sound, and other audio equipment, often for balanced connections. Match the pin count and connector gender, and check that the source and receiving device are compatible in signal level and balanced-input or output requirements. For practical connector and wiring examples, see Legrand AV’s Audio Connector Guide.

How to match a cable or adapter to your devices

  1. Identify the source output. Note the connector and check the device documentation for the signal or mode it supports. For USB-C, confirm video output support rather than inferring it from the port shape.
  2. Identify the receiving device’s input. Confirm what signal the input accepts; on legacy equipment, distinguish composite video, component video, and audio jacks.
  3. Choose a compatible path between them. Match the connector ends and signal direction. For DisplayPort over USB-C, VESA documents adapter paths to HDMI, DVI, VGA, and DisplayPort inputs in its FAQ.
  4. Check the required features. For digital video, compare supported resolution, refresh rate, and relevant features across the source, adapter or cable, and display. For audio, match stereo or mono, balanced or unbalanced wiring, connector type, and signal level where applicable.
  5. Check whether conversion is required. A plug-shape adapter does not necessarily convert one signal type into another. For example, a composite RCA source connected to an HDMI-only display may require active video conversion hardware to change analog video into a digital HDMI signal.

Why a cable that fits may still fail

  • The port does not support the signal you need. A USB-C port without video output support will not send a picture through a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter.
  • The connection is being used in the wrong direction. Some adapters are designed for a specific source-to-display direction; check the product’s stated input and output.
  • The signal types do not match. RCA composite video and HDMI are different signal formats. A simple physical adapter does not establish conversion.
  • The audio wiring is incompatible. TRS can represent different audio arrangements, so a plug may fit while the equipment expects a different wiring scheme.
  • A device or cable lacks a required feature. A working HDMI connection may still fail to deliver the desired resolution, refresh rate, or other capability if one part of the chain does not support it.

For any uncertain port, consult the device manual or manufacturer’s specification. A port label or a matching plug is useful evidence, but neither alone confirms the complete signal path.
