A digital checklist can help you remember your dog’s everyday care, but it cannot provide that care or decide what your dog needs. Use a shared calendar, reminder app, or paper planner to track meals, water, toilet breaks, suitable activity, and any prescribed medication. Ask your veterinarian to tailor feeding, exercise, medication, and preventive-care schedules to your dog.
What belongs in a daily dog-care routine?
A useful routine covers basic needs and creates a record of tasks that are easy to overlook. The right schedule depends on the individual dog, so treat this as a checklist to personalize—not a universal timetable.

- Meals and water: Record meals and make sure fresh water is available. Ask your veterinarian what food and feeding approach suit your dog.
- Toileting and activity: Plan opportunities to go outside, exercise, and play in ways appropriate for your dog’s age, health, and abilities.
- Medication: Add only medication and timing prescribed for your dog. Record completion so another caregiver does not assume it is still due.
- Grooming and rest: Include the grooming your dog needs and a calm, comfortable place to rest.

How to set up reminders without guessing at care
- Write down the veterinarian’s instructions. Use them to set feeding, medication, exercise, and preventive-care tasks. If instructions are unclear or your dog’s needs change, ask the veterinary practice rather than choosing a generic app schedule.
- Create a short daily checklist. Start with meals, water, toilet breaks, activity, and prescribed medication. Add recurring grooming and appointment reminders as needed.
- Choose one place to keep the plan. Use a shared phone calendar, pet-care app, or visible paper checklist. Avoid scattering reminders across systems that caregivers may not all check.
- Mark tasks complete as they happen. In a multi-person household, record who completed each task. This helps caregivers coordinate and reduces the risk of duplicated meals or medication.
- Review the plan when circumstances change. A change in health, behavior, household schedule, or veterinary advice may mean the checklist needs updating.
A reminder is a prompt, not proof that care happened. Marking completion promptly makes the record more useful to everyone looking after the dog.

Which reminder system should you use?
There is no established best-in-class option here. Choose the simplest system that all caregivers can access and keep current.

How to personalize feeding and exercise
Feeding
Do not assume every dog should eat the same food, portion, or number of meals. The ASPCA’s dog nutrition guidance recommends discussing diet and feeding schedules with a veterinarian and describes portion-control, free-choice, and timed feeding methods. Use the method and instructions appropriate for your dog; set reminders to follow them, not to invent them.

Exercise
There is no single walk duration that fits every dog. The ASPCA says exercise needs vary with breed or mix, sex, age, and health. Ask your veterinarian what activity is appropriate, particularly if your dog has health concerns or its abilities have changed.

Use reminders for appointments and preventive care according to your veterinary practice’s instructions. The CDC recommends regular veterinary visits; its dog guidance also advises consulting a veterinarian about appropriate food, care, exercise, and environment.

Keep the routine useful and safe
- Make the checklist short enough that the household will maintain it.
- Use one shared record when several people care for the dog, especially for meals and medication.
- Protect the dog’s food and equipment from contamination, and wash hands after feeding, handling supplies, or cleaning up.
- Do not rely on an app’s default dose, interval, or activity suggestion for an individualized care decision; confirm the plan with a veterinarian.
