Turning off the display is separate from putting the computer to sleep. On a laptop, check the plugged-in lid-close action before leaving it unattended.
Set Windows to stay awake while plugged in
Windows 11
- Connect the PC to reliable power.
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- For Make my device sleep after, set When plugged in to Never, or choose a period longer than the planned session.
- Choose a screen timeout separately if you want the display to turn off. A screen turning off does not, by itself, mean the PC has gone to sleep.

If it is a laptop
Check what happens when the lid closes. Many laptops sleep when closed, and Windows power options let you configure lid-close behavior separately for battery and plugged-in use. If the laptop will remain closed, set the plugged-in lid action appropriately and keep its cooling vents unobstructed. Do not assume that changing the sleep timeout overrides the lid action.

Confirm XSplit and the YouTube event are ready
- Open XSplit Broadcaster and check that the intended scene is selected and configured.
- Check the output you plan to use, then start the stream or local recording using Broadcaster’s output controls.
- Verify that the output has actually started before leaving the PC. A scheduled start is not proof that the stream is live or the recording is being written.
- For a scheduled YouTube live event, create the event in YouTube Studio first. XSplit’s Manual Transition setting affects whether starting the XSplit output also starts the YouTube event automatically or whether you must separately select Go Live in YouTube Studio.

Scheduling a start is not the same as keeping the PC running
XSplit’s Macros Extension can schedule a broadcast or local recording to start at a chosen time. The macro guide says Broadcaster must remain running for the scheduled action to work. A macro does not keep Windows awake, confirm the network remains connected, or verify that the output stays healthy overnight.
If you use a macro, configure the Windows plugged-in sleep timeout as described above, keep Broadcaster open, and test the scheduled start before relying on it. See XSplit’s scheduled-recording guide.

Should you use PowerToys Awake?
Microsoft PowerToys Awake can request that the PC stay awake, but it is not the best sole control for an unattended overnight session. Microsoft says Awake works only while a user is signed in and the feature is enabled; it does not function when the lock screen is displayed. Microsoft’s guidance recommends power-plan settings for persistent keep-awake needs, particularly when stepping away in shared environments. Use Windows’ plugged-in sleep setting as the primary control.

Pre-flight checklist for an overnight run
- Plug in the PC and set its plugged-in sleep timeout to cover the whole session.
- If closing a laptop lid, verify its plugged-in lid-close behavior and leave cooling vents clear.
- Open Broadcaster, check the scene and output, and confirm the stream or recording has started.
- For scheduled YouTube streams, confirm the YouTube Studio event exists and understand whether a separate Go Live action is required.
- Run a short trial before depending on an unattended session.
- Plan for the PC, XSplit, power and network as separate possible points of interruption. The settings and workflow do not guarantee an all-night connection.
What a UPS can—and cannot—protect
A UPS may provide short-term backup power during an interruption, if its capacity suits the PC and connected equipment and its runtime is long enough for the need. It does not prevent Windows from sleeping, keep the internet connection available, prevent XSplit from crashing, or guarantee power for the entire night. No particular UPS model or runtime is established here, so choose against your equipment and required backup duration rather than treating one as a universal solution.
Windows and XSplit version notes
The Settings path above is for Windows 11. Windows 10 presents power controls through different Settings navigation, so do not follow the Windows 11 path literally on that edition. XSplit’s download article, updated in 2022, described the latest Broadcaster version at that time as intended for 64-bit Windows 10 and warned that it might not work with older Windows versions.
