How to Keep WoW Stream Redemptions from Interrupting Gameplay

Separate Twitch redemption controls from OBS alerts: use cooldowns, limits, moderators, and pause controls to manage Channel Points, then hide or mute the Browser Source that creates on-stream notifications.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stop the interruption at its source: use Twitch’s Creator Dashboard to control whether viewers can redeem Channel Points, and use OBS only for the graphic or sound that appears on your broadcast. You can pause redemptions during a raid encounter, add cooldowns and limits, disable selected rewards, or turn Channel Points off entirely. If the problem is an alert overlay, inspect the third-party alert service and its OBS Browser Source instead.

The distinction matters because a redemption request and an on-screen alert are separate systems. A Twitch setting changes whether a request can be made and how it reaches your queue; an OBS setting changes what viewers see or hear.

Identify what is actually interrupting your World of Warcraft stream

Start by watching your own preview or recording and classify the symptom. The correct fix depends on whether you need to stop a request, stop an alert, or manage both.

What you notice Where it is controlled First action
A viewer’s reward request appears in your Activity Feed, chat, or live dashboard and requires a response Twitch Channel Points and the rewards queue Use reward limits, a cooldown, a moderator, or pause redemptions
A graphic, animation, text-to-speech message, or sound plays over the game Your third-party alert service and its OBS Browser Source Hide, mute, or reconfigure that Browser Source
Both a request and an alert appear Twitch and OBS independently Apply one control in each system
You are referring to Twitch Drops notifications Viewer notification settings, not Channel Points Change Drops notifications separately; this does not stop Drops earning

For the Twitch side, the authoritative controls are documented in Twitch’s Channel Points Guide for Creators and its Channel Points FAQ. For the broadcast side, the OBS Project explains in its stream-alert FAQ that OBS Studio does not directly provide stream alerts; alerts are normally supplied by another service and embedded in OBS.

Choose the least restrictive Twitch control that solves the problem

Turning every reward off is effective, but it is not the only option. Work from the least disruptive control to the most restrictive one so viewers can keep participating when you are able to handle requests.

Use a moderator to run the queue

Redemptions that need manual fulfillment appear in Twitch’s Activity Feed and rewards queue. Twitch lists queue actions such as marking a request complete, rejecting it, refunding the viewer’s points, reporting abuse, and pausing redemptions. A moderator can assist with queue tasks, allowing you to keep your attention on a dungeon, raid, battleground, or cutscene.

Give the moderator a clear policy before you go live: which rewards can be completed immediately, which should wait for a break, and which should be rejected or refunded. This avoids having to read every request while you are managing a difficult encounter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add a cooldown and redemption limits

For custom rewards, Twitch documents cooldowns from one minute to seven days. You can also set limits per stream and per user. These settings prevent a single viewer or a fast-moving chat from generating an unmanageable stream of requests, while leaving the reward visible and usable at an appropriate pace.

Cooldowns and limits are guardrails, not fulfillment. A request that gets through still appears for you or your moderator to handle. Set the interval and cap according to the reward’s real cost: a quick verbal response can tolerate a shorter cooldown than a reward that requires you to leave combat, change an in-game setting, or stop speaking.

Disable only the rewards that cause interruptions

In the Channel Points area of the Creator Dashboard, you can enable or disable individual default and custom rewards. Keep low-effort rewards available and turn off anything that demands immediate attention, an unsafe action, or a long interruption. Review the list before each event if your reward plan changes between regular gameplay, progression nights, and community sessions.

Pause redemptions while you are live

Pausing is the best temporary control when a high-attention moment is already underway. Twitch’s guide says: “From here you can also Pause redemptions if you find you’re overwhelmed with requests, or you want to take a break while you’re live.” Pause before a boss pull, a timed objective, a difficult keystone, a ranked match, or any point at which looking away from the game creates risk. Resume when you have a safe moment to clear the queue or when your moderator is ready.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disable Channel Points entirely

If you do not want any Channel Point requests during a broadcast, turn the Channel Points program off in the Creator Dashboard. This is the broadest option: it removes the redemption mechanism rather than merely slowing it. Use it for streams where you cannot monitor chat, where another person is presenting, or where every interruption would undermine the event.

Configure Twitch Channel Points before you go live

  1. Open the Creator Dashboard. Go to the Channel Points controls under Viewer Rewards. Twitch’s labels and dashboard layout can change, so use the current Channel Points page rather than relying on an old screenshot.
  2. Review every reward. For each default or custom reward, decide whether it can be fulfilled during combat, only during a break, or not during this type of stream.
  3. Set custom-reward guardrails. Add a cooldown between one minute and seven days where appropriate, then set a per-stream limit and a per-user limit. Choose values that match the time and attention the reward consumes.
  4. Disable high-risk items. Turn off individual rewards that force an immediate response. You can leave the rest of Channel Points enabled.
  5. Prepare queue rules. Tell moderators when to mark requests complete, reject them, refund points, or report abuse. Keep a short policy in your stream notes so decisions stay consistent.
  6. Check the live queue at the start. Twitch surfaces custom requests through chat and the live dashboard. Clear stale requests or explain how they will be handled before the main gameplay begins.
  7. Use pause deliberately. During a demanding section, pause redemptions rather than trying to process them one by one. Resume only when you can safely monitor the queue.

These controls address the request itself. They do not remove an animation or sound that an alert service sends to your broadcast, so configure that separately if viewers are still seeing or hearing an interruption.

Stop visual and audio redemption alerts in OBS

OBS Studio does not directly provide stream alerts, according to the OBS Project FAQ. A third-party alert service usually supplies a browser-based overlay, and you add that overlay to OBS as a Browser Source. The service’s own dashboard determines which events trigger an alert; OBS determines whether that source is present in the scene and whether its audio reaches the stream.

Find the Browser Source

  1. Open the OBS scene that you use for WoW gameplay.
  2. In the Sources list, identify the Browser Source associated with alerts. Providers use different names, so look for a source created for alerts, notifications, widgets, or a browser overlay.
  3. Use the eye control to hide the source when you want the overlay absent from the broadcast. Hiding it does not change Twitch’s redemption settings.

Stop the sound without hiding the graphic

If the visual is useful but the sound breaks your concentration, use OBS’s Audio Mixer to mute the Browser Source or reduce its level. Confirm that the alert is not also routed through another source, desktop audio device, or monitoring path. The exact controls vary with your scene and audio routing, so verify which meter moves when an alert plays.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Change which events the provider sends

Open the alert provider’s configuration and look for event-type, animation, sound, queue, or duration controls. Interfaces differ, and the OBS FAQ does not document the current controls for every provider. Disable only the redemption event if you want other notifications to remain, or disable the alert entirely if you do not want any overlay during a particular scene.

Keep scenes intentional

Many streamers use separate scenes for gameplay, intermission, and starting or ending screens. Decide in which scenes the Browser Source should be visible. A source hidden in one scene can still appear in another, so inspect each scene used during the WoW broadcast.

Handle an interruption that starts during a live encounter

Use a short emergency sequence so you do not troubleshoot while actively playing.

  1. Protect the gameplay first. Finish the mechanic or reach a safe pause point instead of opening multiple settings panels in combat.
  2. Pause Twitch redemptions. From the live Creator Dashboard, pause the redemption queue. If a moderator is present, ask them to do this and manage pending requests.
  3. Silence or hide the overlay. In OBS, hide the alert Browser Source or mute its audio. If the alert is coming from a provider setting rather than the source itself, disable that event there when safe.
  4. Tell viewers what changed. A brief chat message such as “Redemptions paused during the encounter; they will reopen after the pull” prevents repeated attempts and sets expectations.
  5. Clear the queue deliberately. After the encounter, review each pending request. Mark fulfilled items complete, reject or refund requests you cannot honor, and report abusive content when appropriate.
  6. Resume only when ready. Re-enable redemptions and the Browser Source independently. This lets you keep one system quiet while restoring the other.

Pausing is temporary and suited to a live spike in workload. Disabling a reward or Channel Points is better when the restriction should apply throughout the stream.

Design WoW rewards that do not demand instant attention

Channel Points work best when the reward’s timing matches the game’s pacing. Separate rewards into three groups in your own notes:

  • Safe during play: requests you can acknowledge without leaving the game, such as a short greeting or a simple chat response.
  • Safe between activities: requests you can fulfill after a pull, match, quest turn-in, or loading screen.
  • Break-only: anything requiring a long explanation, a settings change, a character swap, or attention away from the encounter.

Set the cooldown and per-user limit from that classification. Label the reward so the timing is clear; a viewer should not have to guess whether “instant” means immediately during combat or at the next safe break. If you cannot fulfill a reward reliably, disable it rather than accumulating a queue you will later reject.

A moderator can also announce when the queue is paused and remind viewers that a cooldown limits frequency but does not guarantee immediate fulfillment. This keeps the interaction predictable without requiring you to narrate every administrative decision.

Fix common failure modes

“I turned off the alert, but requests still appear.”

An OBS Browser Source controls the broadcast overlay, not Twitch’s redemption availability. Leave the source hidden or muted, then change the reward or pause Channel Points in the Creator Dashboard. Check the Twitch queue separately for requests that were already submitted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I disabled a reward, but viewers still see an old animation.”

The animation is likely being generated by the alert provider. Inspect the provider’s event settings and the Browser Source in every scene. Disabling a Twitch reward does not automatically remove a browser overlay that is configured independently.

“The alert is gone, but its sound continues.”

Check the Browser Source in OBS’s Audio Mixer and any duplicate alert source. Mute the source that is producing the meter activity, and confirm that desktop audio is not carrying the same sound.

“A cooldown did not stop the interruption.”

A cooldown limits how often a reward can be redeemed; it does not pause all rewards or fulfill a request. Increase the cooldown, add per-stream or per-user limits, disable that reward, or pause the entire redemption queue during the high-attention section.

“My moderator cannot keep up.”

Reduce the number of active rewards, increase cooldowns, and define which requests should be rejected or refunded. During a difficult encounter, pause redemptions rather than asking a moderator to process a growing queue in real time.

“I want to stop Drops notifications.”

Drops notifications are a separate viewer-notification setting. Twitch’s Drops help page explains that turning notifications off does not stop a viewer from earning Drops. Do not use Drops settings as a substitute for Channel Point controls.

Test the setup before a high-attention stream

Make a short rehearsal part of your normal stream preparation. With the same scenes and audio devices you will use live, verify each control independently:

  • Confirm that a low-risk reward reaches the Twitch queue.
  • Confirm that your chosen moderator can see and manage the queue.
  • Apply the cooldown and attempt a second redemption to confirm the expected limit message.
  • Pause redemptions and verify that new requests cannot be made while the pause is active.
  • Trigger or preview the alert provider and identify the exact OBS Browser Source and audio meter it uses.
  • Hide the source, mute it, and restore it so you know the quickest emergency action.
  • Check every scene used during the broadcast, not only the main gameplay scene.

Do this before a progression night, tournament, or other stream where opening settings would be costly. Provider interfaces and Twitch dashboard labels can change, so repeat the check after major updates to your workflow.

A practical default configuration for WoW streams

For a typical gameplay stream, leave Channel Points enabled for a small set of low-effort rewards, apply a cooldown and per-user or per-stream cap to each custom reward, and have a moderator watch the queue when possible. Pause redemptions for boss pulls, timed keys, ranked matches, or any segment in which your attention must stay on the game. Keep the alert Browser Source hidden or muted in scenes where even a brief animation or sound is distracting, and enable it only in scenes where you are prepared to react.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This arrangement preserves viewer participation without treating every redemption as an immediate command. Twitch handles eligibility and queue decisions; OBS handles what reaches the broadcast.
