You generally cannot keep a Wirecast output continuously live through a full Windows restart. Windows closes running applications during a restart, which ends Wirecast’s active output. You can prepare to recover the show afterward, but reopening a Wirecast document is not the same as restarting its broadcast. Plan for a maintenance window and have an operator verify the show and explicitly start the stream again.
What a Windows restart means for a live Wirecast output
A Windows update that requires a restart interrupts Wirecast: the application stops running, so its active output stops too. Telestream’s documented startup and reconnect controls do not establish that Wirecast will relaunch and restore a live output unattended. Do not schedule a reboot on the assumption that the broadcast will continue or resume automatically.

There are three separate steps to recovery: Windows starts, Wirecast opens the show, and an operator checks the production and starts the output. Success at one step does not guarantee the next. The streaming platform’s event or session status and credentials may also affect whether a restarted output can connect.

Identify the installed Wirecast version and Windows version first. Telestream maintains version-specific documentation; its index lists Windows help and user guides, including Wirecast 16 materials and earlier releases. Consult the instructions for your installed version rather than assuming an older menu or preference still applies. Telestream’s version history lists Wirecast 16.5.4, released September 16, 2026, as the current public version in the reviewed information; check the official history for changes since then.

- Save the Wirecast document. Confirm that the current show is saved and that you know where its document and media assets are stored.
- Check what must be available after reboot. Verify that media files, cameras, microphones, audio devices, capture hardware, network access, and destination credentials will be available again.
- Choose a maintenance window. Schedule the update outside broadcast hours where possible. If the stream must be restored promptly, assign someone to reopen and inspect the show.
- Allow time for a complete verification. The operator should check inputs, audio, scenes, output settings, and the destination before explicitly starting the broadcast.
These are operational precautions, not a Telestream-verified update procedure. They reduce the chance of discovering a missing source or unavailable device only after the show has been restarted.
What Wirecast’s startup and reconnect settings do—and do not do
Telestream’s Wirecast 11 Windows User Guide documents an Open last document on startup preference. When enabled, it opens the last document used when Wirecast starts. That may help an operator get back to the show, but it does not mean the show automatically goes live.

The same legacy guide documents Maximum Reconnect Attempts, a setting for how many times Wirecast tries to reconnect to a host provider. It concerns attempts to reconnect to a host; it is not proof that Wirecast can relaunch after Windows restarts, that a platform will accept the connection, or that the live output will resume successfully. Because this is a Wirecast 11 guide, check current Wirecast 16 Windows help or ask Telestream Support for current menu locations and behavior.
Choose a recovery approach
| Approach | Recovery confidence | Risk and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Schedule updates outside broadcast hours and manually verify and restart the show | High when an operator is available to check the production and start output | Requires a maintenance window and operator time; downtime can continue until the show is checked. |
| Use a managed-PC startup workflow with an operator check | Potentially reduces time to reopen the show, but unattended live recovery is not established by the cited Telestream controls. | Automatic launch can expose the wrong scene or destination if the setup is not checked. Windows Task Scheduler or service recipes are not validated here as Telestream-approved procedures. |
If you build a managed-PC workflow, treat it as a way to make the computer and application available—not as proof of automatic broadcast recovery. Keep a human verification step before going live.

Troubleshoot if Wirecast does not return to air
Wirecast does not open after the update
Confirm the installed Wirecast and Windows versions, then consult the matching Telestream documentation and release notes. Telestream’s history records Windows-specific issues in earlier releases, including startup crashes, so a post-update failure is not necessarily a misconfigured show.
The show opens, but sources are missing or different
Check that the media files remain available and that cameras, audio devices, and capture hardware are connected and recognized. Verify the intended scene and output settings before starting; do not assume that opening the saved document confirms every live input is working.

Wirecast opens but cannot reconnect to the host
Check Wirecast’s connection status and any configured reconnect attempts, then separately verify the platform’s event or session status and the destination credentials. Reconnect attempts do not guarantee success, and the platform may require a valid, active destination for the output to connect.

The platform shows no live broadcast
Confirm that the output was explicitly started in Wirecast and that the correct destination and credentials are selected. Opening the document alone does not start the broadcast. If connection still fails, use the current version’s Telestream help or contact Telestream Support.

Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuous YouTube stream made from uploaded videos, rather than a live camera production in Wirecast, StreamNeo is a different approach: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps it running, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded-video YouTube streams, not camera-based Wirecast productions. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
