You can delay a Windows 11 feature update without deliberately holding back monthly security updates—but the right method depends on whether your PC is personally managed or controlled by an organization. On a personal PC, the Settings pause applies to updates generally and lasts no more than 35 days. For a longer, feature-only delay, ask your IT administrator about update policies; keep the PC on a supported Windows version and install quality updates promptly.
First, know which updates you are delaying
A feature update moves Windows to a new release. Quality updates arrive more frequently and mainly contain fixes, including security fixes. Microsoft explains the distinction in its Windows Update FAQ. Remaining on a supported release matters: delaying a feature update does not extend that release’s security-support period.

On a personal PC, use Pause updates only for a short interruption
In Settings > Windows Update, check the installed version and update status. If you need to avoid a restart or update briefly, use the Pause updates control and choose an end date. Microsoft’s consumer instructions allow a pause of up to 35 days at a time. The pause is not feature-update-only: quality and security updates can also be delayed while it is active. On a managed PC, ask IT for a feature-only delay
For a device managed by an employer, school, or IT provider, the administrator can manage feature-update offers separately from quality updates through Group Policy or mobile-device management (MDM). Microsoft also documents a target-version policy for administrators who need to control which feature update is offered. These are administrator workflows, not routine instructions for a Home user to edit the registry or apply enterprise settings.
Microsoft’s documented policy limits are maximums, not recommended waiting periods: feature updates can be deferred for up to 365 days and quality updates for up to 30 days. Microsoft advises keeping quality-update deferrals short to reduce the time devices wait for security fixes. The settings and limits are described in Microsoft’s Windows Update client policies. Ask your administrator to set a feature-update delay appropriate to the organization while continuing to deploy quality updates promptly.

Check that your Windows version is still supported
A delay is only useful while the installed release remains within its support period. In Microsoft’s September 8, 2026 notice, Windows 11 version 24H2 is scheduled to reach end of updates on October 13, 2026 for Home and Pro, and October 12, 2027 for Enterprise and Education. After a version leaves support, it no longer receives monthly security protections under the cited notice. Check the edition and version shown in Settings, then compare them with the applicable date in Microsoft’s lifecycle notice. Don’t plan a feature-update delay that carries the device past its support deadline.

Expect some updates and restart behavior to vary
A pause or policy does not guarantee that every update behaves identically. Microsoft notes that some updates—including Defender security intelligence, critical or expedited drivers, and emergency or out-of-band updates—may arrive promptly. Its newer monthly-restart experience is rolling out gradually, so it may not be available on every device. See Microsoft’s update and restart guidance.
