You can keep using Gemini Flash and Pro in the Gemini app without a paid Google AI plan, but Google applies standard usage limits and says availability and limits can change. If you need more app usage, a Google AI plan raises those limits; if you reach a plan limit, Google says you may be able to continue chats with Flash-Lite. For a separate developer option, the Gemini API offers free and paid usage tiers with metered pricing and project rate limits.
Can you still use Gemini Flash and Pro for free?
As of October 7, 2026, Google’s Gemini Apps help page lists Gemini Flash and Gemini Pro as available without an AI plan, subject to standard usage limits. That means free access is listed, not unlimited access. Google cautions that limits and model availability can change and may be affected by service availability. Check the current Gemini Apps limits and upgrades page for what is available to your account.

What happens when free access or a plan limit runs out?
If you do not have a paid plan
Free access remains subject to standard limits. Google does not promise a fixed number of prompts in the help page, so there is no universal count to rely on. When a limit applies, check the model selector and account’s current limit information rather than assuming the same quota applies to everyone.

Google says that when an AI Pro plan ends, users lose access to Pro chats and Pro-only features. It also lists the loss of expanded Google One storage, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, and other plan benefits. Your continued access to the Gemini app is distinct from these paid benefits: free model access is listed, but with standard limits. See Google’s plan-management instructions for the current benefits and account-specific details.

Ways to keep using Gemini
Continue on the free app limits
If standard limits are enough, you can continue using Gemini Apps without subscribing. In the app, review the model and available limit information for your account. To switch models, select the model name in the prompt box. The available options can change, so verify the selector rather than relying on an old model list.
Subscribe for higher app limits
Google lists AI Plus at twice standard limits and AI Pro at four times standard limits. These are plan-relative multipliers, not fixed prompt counts or a guarantee of unlimited use. Google AI plans also have plan-specific features and benefits. Check the current plan page for the price, features, country availability, renewal terms, and cancellation details that apply to your account before subscribing.

- Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
- The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
- Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]
Try Flash-Lite after reaching a plan limit
Google says subscribers who hit a limit can continue chats with Flash-Lite. It is a possible fallback, not a promise that every model or feature remains available after a limit. Choose the model name in the prompt box and select Flash-Lite if it appears; whether it is suitable depends on the task.

The Gemini API is a separate developer route, not an extension of a consumer Gemini app subscription. Google publishes free and paid API tiers, token-based prices by model, and rate limits that depend on the project and billing account. Review the Gemini API pricing page and rate-limit documentation before moving a workload. You may need billing setup and technical integration, and availability and limits can vary by model and project tier.
Data-use terms are another important difference: Google says content submitted in the free API tier may be used to improve its products, while paid-tier content is not. Read the current terms on the pricing page before sending sensitive or business data.

| Option | What it offers | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini Apps without a paid plan | Google lists Flash and Pro access at standard limits. | Current availability, limits, and whether needed features are included. |
| Google AI plan | Higher usage limits and plan-specific features; AI Plus is listed at 2x and AI Pro at 4x standard limits. | Country availability, current price and benefits, and renewal or cancellation terms. |
| Flash-Lite fallback | Google says subscribers may continue chats with Flash-Lite after reaching a limit. | Whether Flash-Lite is available and capable enough for the task. |
| Gemini API | Developer access with free and paid tiers and model-specific metered pricing. | Expected token volume, billing setup, model availability, project rate limits, technical effort, and data-use terms. |
For occasional personal use, the free app route may be sufficient. A subscription is more relevant when you need higher app limits or plan-specific features. The API is worth evaluating when you need programmatic access and can account for token costs, rate limits, setup, and data handling.
