Give each YouTube playlist its own encoder process, configuration, schedule, and logs. If the streams take turns, set explicit start and stop times with a handoff margin; if they run simultaneously, check that the VPS can handle their combined resource and network load. This separation prevents a schedule change or stop command for one playlist from unintentionally affecting the other.
Choose whether the playlists take turns or run together
First decide what “not overlapping” means for your channel. Two schedules that take turns need non-overlapping run windows. Two feeds intended to be live at once are not a scheduling conflict, but they do need separate jobs and enough VPS capacity.

For alternating schedules
Write down each job’s start and end time in UTC. Leave a handoff margin between the outgoing stream and the incoming one: stop the first encoder, confirm its event has ended as intended, and allow the next event to become ready before starting its encoder. A schedule that ends one job at exactly the moment another starts leaves no time to resolve a delayed stop or event setup.
For simultaneous streams
Run and monitor both jobs independently. Account for their combined CPU, memory, disk I/O, and outbound network use. There is no universal VPS sizing formula established here; the load depends on the media and encoding work each job performs, as well as the server and network configuration.

Make each playlist an independent job
- Create a separate media list for each feed. Use unmistakable names such as
playlist-aandplaylist-b. Keep each list and its working files in a location that makes the association clear. - Create a separate process or service definition for each list. Each job should have its own name, working directory, start and stop schedule, restart behavior, and logs. Use the service manager or scheduler appropriate to your VPS operating system; the exact setup differs by system, and YouTube does not require a particular choice such as systemd or cron.
- Associate each job with the intended YouTube event. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key to connect an encoder to an event. Keep those settings with the process that is meant to use them, and check the event association before starting either job.
- Restrict access to stream-key settings. A stream key is a credential YouTube uses to accept the feed. Store it with appropriate file permissions and avoid printing it in shared or publicly accessible logs.
- Make start, stop, and restart actions target one job. Name jobs distinctly and avoid broad stop commands that could terminate both when you are changing only one schedule.
- Keep separate logs and check them separately. When a stream fails, its process name and log should make it possible to identify which playlist and event are involved without confusing it with the other job.
The exact commands depend on your Linux distribution, scheduler, and encoder. The important property is isolation: a change to one job’s schedule, restart policy, or stop action should not silently alter the other job.
Check playlists before relying on the schedule
If you use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to play files in sequence, validate each playlist before launch. The files need compatible stream layouts and time bases for concatenation. The demuxer uses each file’s duration to adjust timestamps for the next file, so inaccurate duration metadata can lead to timestamp problems or visible and audible artifacts. Keep the media for one feed from being accidentally substituted into the other feed’s manifest.

Check YouTube’s event and active-stream limits
In YouTube Live Control Room, verify that each encoder is configured for its intended event, then test both outputs. YouTube currently documents a limit of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key; the limits apply together. Two feeds fit within those limits only if other active streams have not used up the available capacity. The cited guidance does not say that two scheduled streams must always use different keys, so check the active-stream count and key configuration in Live Control Room rather than assuming a key change is required.
YouTube’s encoder instructions describe creating or scheduling an event, entering its stream URL and key in the encoder, starting the encoder, and ending the stream when the event is over. Streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive behavior does not keep an encoder process running indefinitely; continuous playback still depends on your job and schedule.

Test and monitor both feeds independently
- Test each event before automating it. Start with the intended encoder settings and event association for that job.
- Check the preview in Live Control Room. Confirm the correct playlist is reaching the correct event and that the event is accessible.
- Check audio and video quality for each output. A successful start for one job does not confirm that the other job is configured correctly.
- Observe a scheduled handoff. Confirm that the outgoing job stops and the next job starts at the intended times, including the margin you allowed.
- Monitor process state, exit status, logs, and VPS resource use. Also check both public watch pages. Decide in advance whether a failed job should restart only itself or alert an operator; do not let an automatic restart policy for one job affect the other.
Troubleshoot overlap and failed starts
Both playlists start at once, though they should take turns
- Compare the two jobs’ configured UTC windows and correct any overlapping times.
- Check for a delayed or still-running outgoing encoder before the next job starts; extend the handoff margin if needed.
- Verify that each schedule controls only its own named process, not a shared or broad stop/start target.
Stopping one job stops both
- Inspect the service or scheduler definitions and replace shared process targeting with separate job names or identifiers.
- Use each job’s own stop and restart action, and check its logs to confirm which process received the action.
The wrong playlist appears on an event
- Check the media manifest, working directory, event URL, and stream key associated with each job.
- Keep settings and logs clearly labelled so one feed’s configuration cannot be mistaken for the other’s.
A stream cannot start
- Check that the event is accessible and that its URL and key are correctly associated with the encoder.
- Check Live Control Room for active-stream limits: YouTube permits up to 10 active streams per channel and 3 per stream key, subject to both limits.
- Test the encoder and preview independently for the affected event rather than assuming the other job’s successful output validates it.
Concatenated media has timing artifacts
- Check that the files in that playlist have compatible stream layouts and time bases.
- Review duration metadata because the concat demuxer uses it when placing the next file’s timestamps.
