Try Browserless’s built-in consent blocker first: set blockConsentModals=true on a supported screenshot or PDF request, or enable it for a BrowserQL session. If it does not handle the page’s banner, click the correct visible consent button or inject CSS to hide the known banner element. These approaches differ: clicking a consent control makes a choice on the page; CSS only changes what appears in the screenshot.
Use Browserless’s built-in consent blocker first
Browserless documents blockConsentModals for BrowserQL and its /screenshot and /pdf REST APIs. The option defaults to false, so enable it explicitly when you want Browserless to detect and dismiss supported consent banners. The official example uses a screenshot URL with blockConsentModals=true. See the cookie-consent example, REST launch parameters and BrowserQL launch parameters.
For a REST screenshot, send a POST request to the Screenshot API with the target URL and screenshot settings, including the consent-blocking option. For BrowserQL, set the corresponding launch or session parameter. The exact request envelope depends on whether you use the REST API or BrowserQL; follow the relevant endpoint documentation rather than treating the REST URL example as a universal request format.
Use a site-specific fallback if the banner remains
Click the actual visible consent control
Some sites need a site-specific interaction. Browserless’s BrowserQL example navigates to the page, checks for a visible matching selector, and clicks it before capture. It illustrates a selector such as [id*=accept], [class*=accept], button[id*=cookie]. Treat that as a starting point, not a safe universal selector: pages use different markup, and a broad match could select the wrong control. Inspect the rendered page and replace the example with the selector for the intended accept button. Browserless identifies OneTrust and CookieBot as examples that may need custom handling. The example waits with waitUntil: networkIdle before capture; this is a timing strategy, not a guarantee that every page has finished updating.

BrowserQL example pattern, adapted to your page and the API syntax in the official example:
await page.goto('https://example.com');
const accept = await page.$('[id*=accept], [class*=accept], button[id*=cookie]');
if (accept && await accept.isVisible()) {
await accept.click();
}
await page.waitForLoadState('networkidle');
// Take the screenshot using your BrowserQL workflow.
This illustrates the decision and interaction pattern; confirm the exact BrowserQL methods and session configuration against your current integration. After clicking, inspect the captured page to verify the correct choice was made and the banner is gone.
Hide a known banner with CSS
If you need only a clean visual capture and know the banner selector, inject a style before taking the screenshot. For example, target .cookie-banner with display: none !important. Browserless documents addStyleTag / add_style_tag for injected styles that hide cookie banners or sticky headers; see Cookies and page setup in BAP.

await page.addStyleTag({
content: '.cookie-banner { display: none !important; }'
});
// Take the screenshot after the style is applied.
Replace .cookie-banner with the actual selector from the page. CSS suppression does not accept or reject consent, save a choice, or otherwise interact with the site’s consent system.
Choose the method that matches the goal
| Method | Use it when | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
blockConsentModals=true |
You want Browserless’s supported automatic handling and the page’s banner is recognized. | A site-specific or unsupported banner can remain. |
| Click a visible consent control | The page needs an interaction and you can identify the correct control. | Selectors vary; an overly broad selector can click the wrong element. Verify the result. |
| Inject CSS | You know the banner element and want to remove it from the rendered capture only. | It changes appearance, not the site’s consent state. |
Check the capture and troubleshoot failures
- The banner is still visible: Confirm that
blockConsentModalsis enabled for the API or BrowserQL flow you are using. If the built-in handling misses it, inspect the rendered markup and use the exact visible consent control or banner selector. - The page changed, but the banner remains: Check that your selector matches the intended visible control and that the interaction runs after navigation. Wait for the page to settle, then inspect the screenshot. A network-idle wait is one documented example, not a guarantee for every page.
- CSS has no effect: Verify the selector against the rendered page and apply the style before capture. Make sure it targets the banner itself rather than a similarly named element.
- The screenshot shows a CAPTCHA, blank page, or access-denied response: That is a separate automation-blocking problem, not a consent-banner issue. Browserless documents its Screenshot API and Unblock API for access-related failures; removing a banner will not resolve a bot check.
Browserless offers these workflows through REST endpoints and BrowserQL; BAP is its TypeScript/Python SDK layer over BrowserQL. Use the interface already present in your integration rather than assuming one language has different banner-handling capability. See the BAP overview.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo offers a single GET request for a screenshot. Cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed; the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. It also provides an MCP server so AI agents can take screenshots.
