To keep your encoder configuration reusable, create a custom stream key in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and reuse it. They do different jobs: the stream key sends video to YouTube; the channel Live URL helps viewers find the current broadcast. YouTube does not expressly guarantee that the channel URL will remain unchanged forever.
Stream key and viewer URL are not the same thing
| Item | What it does | Who uses it |
|---|---|---|
| Custom stream key | Authenticates the encoder’s feed to YouTube. YouTube says to create a custom stream key to reuse the same key. | Your encoder; keep it private like a password. |
| Channel Live URL | Practical recurring destination for viewers looking for the current live stream: https://www.youtube.com/channel/CHANNEL_ID/live. |
Your audience. |
| Scheduled event watch page | A page for promoting an upcoming stream and letting viewers set reminders. | Your audience before that event starts. |
A scheduled event page is not interchangeable with the channel Live URL, and reusing stream settings does not make it so. YouTube describes scheduled streams and reuse of stream settings, but does not expressly guarantee how long the channel’s /live destination will remain unchanged. See YouTube’s encoder setup help and live stream settings help.

Set up a recurring prerecorded loop
- Check live-stream eligibility. YouTube’s current help says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. Eligibility and limits can change, so check your channel status and YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Go Live workflow. Choose the Stream workflow in Live Control Room for an encoder-based recurring setup. Create a custom stream key if you want a dedicated reusable key. YouTube also offers a way to reuse previous stream settings. The exact controls can change; follow the labels currently shown in Studio.
- Configure the encoder. Select YouTube or enter the stream URL shown in Live Control Room, then enter the custom stream key. Load the prerecorded video and enable looping in the encoder. Loop controls differ by software or device; YouTube’s encoder instructions do not specify product-specific loop steps.
- Choose the audience link for the job. For a recurring destination where viewers can look for the current broadcast, share the channel Live URL. For advance promotion, reminders, or a specific upcoming event, schedule a stream in Live Control Room and share that event’s watch page.
- Select a secure ingest protocol where available. If your encoder supports RTMPS, use it for encrypted ingest. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and explains how to reveal and copy the RTMPS server URL in Live Control Room. Details: YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Preview and test before going live. Check the Live Control Room preview and monitor audio and video quality. YouTube’s streaming tips suggest setting up encoders at least two hours before an event and starting them at least 15 minutes before its scheduled time; these are YouTube recommendations, not universal technical requirements. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
Protect the stream key and verify the broadcast
- Treat the stream key as a password. Do not publish it in a description, public instructions, or screenshots, and never share it as the viewer URL.
- If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room using YouTube’s stream-key controls, then update the encoder with the replacement key.
- YouTube says the encoder feed creates a watch page when streaming begins. Stopping the encoder ends that feed. Check current status in Studio rather than assuming that a saved key means a stream is live.
- YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance applies to streams below that duration; do not assume the same archive outcome for a longer broadcast. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Choose a recurring-stream setup
| Choice | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Software encoder | A software-based workflow using a computer. | YouTube documents software encoders; configure looping in the encoder you choose. A hardware encoder is not required just to reuse a key or share a channel link. |
| Standalone hardware encoder | Higher-production setups that use dedicated encoding hardware. | YouTube documents hardware encoders as an option, not a prerequisite for this use case. See YouTube’s encoder overview. |
Troubleshoot common URL and stream-key problems
Viewers cannot find the current broadcast
Make sure you shared the channel Live URL for the recurring destination, not the private stream key or an old scheduled-event page. If you are promoting a particular future broadcast, share that event’s watch page instead. Confirm the feed has actually started and check its status in Live Control Room.

The encoder is not connecting
Check that the encoder is using the server URL shown in Live Control Room and the matching stream key. If you reset or replaced the key, update the encoder too. If supported, select the RTMPS URL and protocol rather than assuming the encoder will switch automatically.

The feed stops when the encoder stops
YouTube’s encoder workflow sends a feed while the encoder is running; stopping it ends that feed. A reusable key saves configuration work but does not itself keep the feed active. For a prerecorded loop, the encoder must continue sending the video.
The loop option is missing
Looping is controlled by the encoder, and the steps vary by product. Check that encoder’s current documentation for file playback and repeat settings; YouTube’s general encoder pages do not define a universal loop control.
