Before submitting anything, remove personal details, credentials, private links, and confidential school information. A school login or a “private” label does not, by itself, tell you whether prompts are retained, shared, or used to improve models.
Before you paste code into an AI tutor
- Check that the tool is approved. Use the tutor and account method your school or institution specifies. UK Department for Education guidance recommends checking approval, understanding how a tool handles personal data, and consulting the school’s data protection officer or IT lead. A tool being easy to access does not mean the school has approved it. Read the UK guidance on AI and school data protection.
- Remove information that identifies or exposes people. Delete names, email addresses, student IDs, school or class identifiers, credentials, API keys, access tokens, private repository URLs, and information copied from school records. Do not assume that removing a name makes the remaining material anonymous.
- Reduce the code to the question. Share a short excerpt or a small synthetic example instead of a whole assignment or repository when that is enough to explain the bug. Replace real names and data with fictional values.
- Check the service’s actual data terms. Find out what it collects, how long it keeps prompts and logs, who can access them, whether data goes to other providers, and whether inputs may be used for model training or product improvement. Check whether the terms that apply to your school account differ from the service’s general terms.
- Pause if an answer is unclear. Do not submit private or identifying material until a teacher, school privacy contact, data protection officer, or IT lead can explain the approved process.
- Follow age limits and school rules. Check the tool’s minimum-age requirements and your school’s acceptable-use policy before using it.
These steps reduce exposure; they cannot guarantee that a provider retains no data. The UK Department for Education recommends avoiding personal data in generative AI tools where possible. See its guidance on generative AI in education.

What to remove—and why

Questions to ask about the tutor
Review the terms and privacy information for the specific tutor, school agreement, and account configuration—not just a general product description. Pennsylvania’s Department of Education advises schools to examine data control, permitted uses, vendor responsibilities, third-party sharing, and training use. It states: “As a rule of thumb, AI tools should only be allowed to collect, process, and retain the minimum amount of data necessary to deliver the service they are providing.” Read Pennsylvania’s AI in schools guidance.
- What prompt content, code, account details, device information, and usage logs does the service collect?
- Why is each category collected, and who controls it?
- Can prompts or code be used for model training, product improvement, safety review, or another purpose? Can that use be disabled, and does the school agreement govern it?
- How long are prompts, code, logs, and backups retained? How do deletion requests work, and what exceptions apply?
- Which service providers or subprocessors receive information, and where is it processed or stored?
- Who can review submitted content, including school administrators or provider staff, and under what circumstances?
- What security controls, breach procedures, and contractual limits apply?
- Does the school privacy notice explain the tool’s collection, processing, storage, and use?

Privacy, school accounts, and model training
Do not infer data handling from labels such as “private” or “education,” or from signing in with a school account. Those details do not establish how long a particular submission is kept, whether it can be reviewed, whether it is shared with other providers, or whether it is used to train or improve a model. The answer depends on the tutor, account settings, and applicable school agreement. Check the approved materials or ask the school contact responsible for privacy or IT.
Legal and copyright context depends on where you study
United States schools
In US K–12 settings, FERPA, COPPA, state student-privacy laws, and the service’s agreement may all be relevant. FERPA concerns personally identifiable information in education records and includes exceptions; whether a particular arrangement is permitted depends on the facts and applicable terms. The US Department of Education explains FERPA privacy and data-sharing resources.

COPPA applies to covered online collection of personal information from children under 13. The Federal Trade Commission describes a school-consent route when an operator collects children’s information for the school’s use and benefit and for no other commercial purpose; it also discusses notice, access, deletion, and limits on other commercial uses. These rules do not amount to a blanket approval of any AI tutor. Read the FTC’s COPPA frequently asked questions. A school or district should assess whether a service is suitable rather than leaving that determination to an individual teacher.

The Department for Education recommends not using personal data in generative AI tools where possible. If using it is strictly necessary, the school should protect that data and ensure the product and procedures comply with data-protection legislation and school policy. Its guidance also addresses transparency with pupils and parents, age restrictions, and agreement for AI processing. Read the UK education guidance.

Privacy and copyright are separate questions. Student prompts and work may be copyright material; UK guidance says schools should not allow students’ original work to be used to train generative AI models without permission or an applicable exception. Removing personal information does not settle what may be done with the work itself. The Department for Education’s guidance covers copyright and student work.

- Stop sending more. Do not add further identifying details while you work out what was exposed.
- Tell the appropriate school contact. Contact your teacher, school privacy or data protection officer, or IT lead, and describe what kind of information was submitted and which account or tool was used.
- Secure exposed credentials. If a password, API key, or token was included, follow the school’s or service’s procedure to revoke or replace it. Deleting a message may not invalidate a credential.
- Ask what deletion can accomplish. Use the service’s documented deletion process if appropriate, but ask whether copies, backups, logs, or provider records remain and whether the school needs to take further action.
Do not promise yourself that deleting a chat removes every copy. Retention and deletion depend on the provider’s terms and configuration, so the school contact should guide the response.
