Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

To download with the screen off, use Valve’s separate low-power download mode while a download is active; it is not the same as ordinary suspend.
What happens to downloads when the Steam Deck is suspended?
In ordinary suspend, the Deck disconnects from Wi-Fi, so you should not expect an active download to continue or a scheduled update to start. Valve’s Steam Deck developer FAQ says the device disconnects from Wi-Fi while suspended. That guidance concerns ordinary suspend; Valve later announced a distinct display-off low-power download mode.

The distinction matters: turning off the display for a download is not the same as putting the Deck into regular sleep. Valve’s November 4, 2025 announcement describes the display-off mode, while the subsequent November 17, 2025 client update provides follow-up release context.

- Connect to Wi-Fi and start or queue the download while the Deck is awake. The mode is for active downloads; it is not a way to wake the device later and fetch an update while it is in ordinary sleep.
- Press the power button during the download. If the Deck offers the choice to continue downloading with the screen off, select Continue.
- Or let the idle timeout start the mode. Valve says the Deck can enter display-off download mode after its idle timeout while content is downloading.
- Check the Power setting when using battery. Valve says the mode is enabled by default while plugged in. To use it on battery, enable it under Settings > Power, if that option appears on your Deck.
Valve’s product page describes ordinary suspend and resume separately from this download behavior: Steam Deck specifications and features.

What changes when the Deck is plugged in or on battery?
| Situation | Behavior described by Valve | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Plugged in, active download | Display-off low-power download mode is enabled by default, according to Valve’s November 4, 2025 announcement. | Start the download while awake, then use the power-button prompt or allow the idle timeout. |
| On battery, active download | Valve says the mode can be enabled in Settings > Power. The Deck enters full sleep when charge falls below 20%. | Enable the option if available and keep enough charge for the download to finish. |
| Ordinary suspend | Wi-Fi disconnects, according to Valve’s Steam Deck developer FAQ. | Do not rely on ordinary sleep to continue or begin downloads. |
The 20% threshold is the battery behavior Valve described in its November 4, 2025 announcement; it is not a general promise that every current software channel or model exposes identical controls.
Why an update may still not start
Download scheduling and suspend behavior solve different problems. Steam’s download settings let you manage the queue, auto-updates, and per-game update behavior, but they do not keep Wi-Fi connected during ordinary suspend. See Steam Support’s download settings guidance.

- The Deck is asleep rather than in display-off download mode: wake it and start the download while online.
- The download is only scheduled: queue or start it before turning the display off; do not expect the Deck to wake itself from suspend to fetch it.
- The battery is below 20%: Valve says battery-powered display-off downloads transition to full sleep below that charge level.
- You cannot find the setting or prompt: Valve’s available announcements do not establish that the feature and its exact labels are present on every current stable SteamOS/client channel or model. Check the installed Deck’s Settings > Power and any prompt shown when you press the power button during an active download.
Can the Deck fetch updates while it is fully asleep?
Valve’s sources distinguish active downloads with the display off from ordinary suspend, where Wi-Fi disconnects. They do not establish that the Deck can wake itself from full sleep to discover and download pending updates. Set auto-update preferences in Steam if useful, but leave the Deck awake and online when you need an update to begin.
