What needs to stay up to date?
Updates can fix security vulnerabilities and other bugs, improve performance, or add features. A known flaw may be exploitable, so updates are part of routine device security, not just a way to get new features. The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) advises installing updates promptly when notified—ideally within a few days—while the vendor’s security-critical notices deserve particular attention.

Include the software layers you use, not only the main operating system. The NCSC’s device-update guidance identifies operating systems, browsers and browser extensions, applications, and firmware. Some connected devices also rely on a manufacturer’s companion app or a model-specific update procedure.
- Operating systems: Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and other systems installed on your computers, phones, and tablets.
- Browsers and extensions: Browsers are complex and exposed to websites, so keep them—and any extensions you rely on—on your checklist.
- Applications: Include frequently used apps and any that do not update through the operating system’s app store.
- Firmware: Check the manufacturer’s instructions for devices such as routers, printers, and other connected equipment. Whether updates are automatic or manual varies by product.
Set up a routine for personal devices
1. Make a simple inventory
Write down each device, its operating system, the browser and important apps it runs, and any firmware or companion-app steps the manufacturer expects you to manage. This list makes gaps easier to spot, especially for devices that are not used every day.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Enable automatic updates where possible
Use the built-in update settings for operating systems and apps when automatic installation is offered. If an app does not update automatically, use its own update function or follow the publisher’s official instructions. Automatic updating is the practical default, but it does not remove the need to check that updates are actually being applied.
3. Install notices promptly and check completion
When a trusted system or app reports an update, install it without unnecessary delay, especially if the vendor identifies it as security-critical. Allow time for restarts when needed. Periodically open the relevant update settings or app store and confirm that updates have completed; automation can stop working, and low storage can prevent an update from finishing.

4. Keep a backup that can help you recover
Back up important data regularly, preferably with an automatic routine, and make sure a copy remains separate enough from the device to be useful if that device fails. The NCSC recommends regular or automatic backups; it does not require a particular storage product. An external drive is one possible destination, not a prerequisite.
Update firmware through a trusted route
Firmware is software closely tied to hardware, including how a device starts or operates. Its update process is more model-specific than a typical app update, so use the manufacturer-supported procedure and follow the instructions for the exact model. Do not install firmware files or follow installation instructions from unofficial sources.

Windows can deliver some system or device firmware packages through Windows Update to UEFI UpdateCapsule. Microsoft’s documentation describes a delivery mechanism, not a guarantee that every computer or accessory receives firmware this way; the firmware provider is responsible for verifying that its package has not been tampered with. Apple’s secure software update documentation, published February 18, 2021, describes checks that allow supported devices to install only operating-system versions Apple is actively signing and are designed to help prevent downgrade attacks. Neither mechanism replaces the maker’s current, model-specific instructions.
NIST’s Platform Firmware Resiliency Guidelines describe protections for preventing unauthorized firmware changes, detecting changes, and recovering from attacks. For an owner, the practical step is to stick to the supported update path rather than trying unofficial firmware or improvised procedures.

Use official sources and avoid update lures
Install updates through the device’s built-in updater, its official app store, or the software or device maker’s official instructions. Do not use update files linked from unexpected emails, attachments, or advertisements: malicious content can pretend to be an update. CISA’s archived software-update guidance also advises avoiding untrusted networks for updates when feasible. That is a precaution, not a reason to indefinitely postpone an urgent security update.
Choose automation or manual checks based on the device
Automatic updating is generally the simplest choice when the vendor supports it. Manual checks still matter for apps without automatic updates and devices that require a separate firmware step. Consider whether the device is still supported, whether updates install automatically, how restarts or interruptions are handled, and how you can verify that installation succeeded.

For Windows personal devices, Microsoft says default automatic behavior is generally appropriate for user productivity and security. Windows policies can also control schedules, active hours, and deadlines in managed settings; the policies are not a reason for a home user to postpone a security fix indefinitely.
For organizations: manage updates as a fleet
A household routine is not a substitute for organizational patch management. In a fleet, maintain an inventory, prioritize by security risk and device criticality, test where operational impact warrants it, deploy on a defined schedule, and verify which devices completed installation. Include firmware, operating systems, and applications, and account for the possibility that patching affects service availability.
NIST’s SP 1800-31, published in April 2022, describes inventory, prioritization, testing, routine and emergency patching, and emergency mitigations. Microsoft documents update timing and deadline controls for managed Windows devices, and its software-management guidance describes cross-platform inventory and policy management for organizations. Those administrative tools are fleet controls, not prerequisites for keeping a personal device current.

What to do when a device reaches end of support
Check the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model and software version. If the vendor has ended support, the device may no longer receive supported security updates; installing a cleanup or repair tool cannot restore that support. Consider migration, replacement, or retirement. If immediate replacement is not feasible, limiting the unsupported device’s access to sensitive activities or networks may reduce exposure, but it does not make the device supported.
CISA’s general guidance describes end-of-life software as software for which the vendor has discontinued support or updates and advises against continuing to use it. CISA BOD 26-02 addresses end-of-support devices, firmware, and software on specified U.S. federal civilian executive-branch systems and network-edge devices. Its mandatory requirements have that limited scope; they are not a general consumer mandate.
