Keep credentials, customer data, and anything your organization has not approved out of AI prompts. If policy permits sharing internal code, send only the smallest sanitized excerpt that will help, use an approved account and service, and check how that exact product, endpoint, files, tools, and settings handle data. A promise not to train on your inputs does not, by itself, mean they are never stored.
What “private” means when you use an AI model
Privacy is not a single setting. Before sending code or security data, check separately whether the provider uses it to train or improve models, whether it retains it for abuse monitoring or product features, whether it becomes saved conversation or application state, and who in your organization can access the service. Files, caches, grounding features, and connected tools can have different handling from ordinary chat.
The answer also depends on the product surface. A consumer chat account, a managed business workspace, and an API integration may have different terms and controls. Even within one API, behavior can vary by endpoint or feature. Do not transfer a claim about one service or configuration to another.
How the documented service behaviors differ
The following is a comparison of the cited documentation, not a ranking of which provider is safest. The sources cover different products and configurations, so compare the exact service your team will use.

These descriptions do not mean a provider never sees submitted content, nor do they establish the terms for every region, account, endpoint, or contract. OpenAI also describes encryption in transit and at rest, Enterprise Key Management for eligible setups, and access-management features in its business security documentation; confirm which controls apply to your product and configuration. The cited Anthropic and Google retention sources do not, on their own, establish a complete comparison of all security controls.
A safer workflow before you prompt
- Classify the material. Identify credentials, private keys, tokens, connection strings, customer or personal data, security findings, proprietary code, and anything restricted by policy, contract, or law. If the selected service is not approved for a category, do not send it.
- Reduce the payload. Share only the relevant function, error, or configuration fragment. Replace real names, identifiers, and values with synthetic examples. Remove secrets and customer information from code, logs, screenshots, and attachments. Avoid uploading a whole repository when a sanitized excerpt will do.
- Use the approved account and service. Confirm the precise product, account type, organization settings, and endpoint. A personal account should not be assumed to have the administrative controls or contractual terms of a business workspace or API service.
- Check the full data path. Review training use, abuse-monitoring retention, saved chats, application state, uploads, caches, grounding, session resumption, and connected tools or integrations. Read feature-specific documentation, not just the main privacy or training statement.
- Limit access. Restrict which people can use the service and which repositories or data they may provide. If using OpenAI, verify whether the access-management and encryption features described for business services are available and enabled for your setup.
- Recheck when things change. Review terms and settings during procurement and after material changes to the product, endpoint, configuration, or contract. Provider documentation can change; Google’s Gemini Developer API page, for example, was updated September 14, 2026 UTC.
Use repository safeguards, but do not rely on them for prompt privacy
Secret scanning and push protection can help catch supported credentials in repositories. GitHub says push protection blocks supported secrets before they reach protected repositories, but coverage depends on the enabled feature and supported secret types, and protection can be bypassed. These controls do not make it safe to paste a credential into an AI prompt or prevent every other route of disclosure.

- Enable the secret-scanning and push-protection features available for your repositories, and understand their supported patterns and scope.
- Keep secrets out of prompts even when repository scanning is enabled; scanning is a separate safeguard.
- If a real credential is exposed in a repository or another unintended destination, follow your incident process and treat the credential as compromised. Revoke or rotate it as appropriate.
What to do if sensitive data was already sent
First determine what was exposed and where: a prompt, uploaded file, connected tool, saved chat, repository, or another destination. Follow your organization’s incident process, notify the appropriate security or privacy contact, and identify any real credentials so they can be revoked or rotated as appropriate. Then review the service’s applicable deletion controls and terms. Do not assume that deleting a visible chat immediately removes every copy or feature-specific state.
