How to Monitor Self-Hosted Atlassian Apps for Suspicious File Access

For self-hosted Atlassian Data Center, monitor both HTTP access logs and application audit logs, and forward records from every cluster node to a central logging platform. Access logs show individual requests; audit logs record product actions such as administrative or permission changes. Neither alone proves a file was stolen, so investigate suspicious patterns by correlating them with the account, source IP, node, timestamp, response status, permissions, and expected activity.

Which Atlassian logs show who accessed a file?

Use two complementary records. Atlassian recommends using access logs to identify unusual activity, while its product audit logs provide a record of events such as configuration and permission changes. An access-log line can show that a request was made and include available metadata; it does not, on its own, establish intent, authorization, or what happened to the file after the response.

  • HTTP access logs: Request-level evidence, including fields such as source IP, authenticated user when available, HTTP method, endpoint, and response code. Jira’s Tomcat access logs cover browser and API requests. See Atlassian’s Jira access-log parsing guide.
  • Application audit logs: Recorded product actions and changes. They help explain account, permission, and configuration context around a request. See Atlassian’s Data Center security checklist.

Audit coverage can be disabled or changed, so a quiet audit stream does not establish that no activity occurred. Review the configured coverage and exclusions before relying on it.

How do I monitor Jira, Confluence, and Bitbucket Data Center logs in a SIEM?

  1. Inventory the deployment. Record each product and version, cluster node, local home path, proxy or load-balancer path, and existing audit coverage. Check version requirements before relying on built-in security alerts.
  2. Review audit coverage. Enable or verify the events relevant to administrative, permission, and user activity, and document exclusions that affect what is recorded.
  3. Collect HTTP access logs. For Jira, Tomcat access logs can provide request metadata for both UI and API traffic. Ensure the collector can associate each record with its source node.
  4. Collect audit logs from every node. Jira and Confluence Data Center store audit files under the local home directory’s log/audit directory, with a separate file on each cluster node. Bitbucket also documents per-node audit files. Product instructions are available for Jira external logging integrations, Confluence external logging integrations, and Bitbucket audit logging.
  5. Forward records centrally and preserve copies. Atlassian documentation gives ELK, Splunk, Sumo Logic, and Amazon CloudWatch as integration examples. Configure collection on every node, then verify that records arrive with timestamps and node identity. Keep protected copies in alternate storage for the retention period your investigations require; local files rotate and old files can be removed when configured limits are reached.
  6. Validate the pipeline safely. With a controlled account, make an authorized request for a known attachment. Confirm that the expected node logs it, the collector forwards it, and central search finds it. This validates collection without treating an untested configuration as operational.

Jira and Confluence audit-file limits and rotation depend on configuration. Atlassian’s integration documentation describes a 100 MB rotation threshold and a default limit of 100 files; verify the running installation’s settings rather than assuming those values apply. Jira may delete the oldest file when its configured limits are reached. Confluence audit logs are JSON and rotate by time or size with configurable retention.

How do I monitor file downloads in Jira?

Atlassian documents a Jira attachment request pattern of GET .*secure/attachment/d+. The endpoint family can represent a download or a preview, so it is a useful search pattern—not proof of exfiltration. The access-log article explains that records can include the request’s IP, authenticated user when present, method, endpoint, and response code.

Search for the documented pattern in Jira access logs, then inspect the surrounding requests and identity context. Atlassian also shows a POST pattern for AttachTemporaryFile; treat uploads separately from downloads or previews because they represent different activity.

Do not apply Jira’s route pattern to Confluence or Bitbucket. The documentation cited here does not establish equivalent current file-access routes for those products. Start with their access logs, identify product-specific routes for the installed version, and validate any proposed pattern with a controlled request.

  • EFFECTIVE PROTECTION: Employs advanced filtering technologies to safeguard against sophisticated threats.

How can I detect suspicious attachment access?

Use the logged request fields to identify activity that merits investigation. These are practical detection ideas, not a claim that Atlassian supplies built-in rules for each pattern.

  • Unusual bursts of attachment requests or activity at unexpected times.
  • Requests from an unexpected source IP or an account that does not normally access the relevant material.
  • Repeated denied requests or a response volume that is unusual for the account or workflow.
  • Access inconsistent with the user’s role or expected duties.

For each alert, correlate the request with the user’s identity and permissions, source network, node, timestamp, adjacent requests, audit events, and available application or proxy records. A request record is evidence of a request and its logged metadata; decide what it means only in that wider context.

Can Atlassian’s built-in security alerts monitor file access?

Atlassian documents Security monitoring and alerts for Jira 10.0 and later, Confluence 9.1 and later, and Bitbucket 9.1 and later. The feature reports potentially suspicious activity such as critical configuration changes and grants of system administrator access. Email notifications require a valid SMTP server, and access to the in-product tracking hub and notifications is permission-controlled. The feature processes audit-log events and ignores audit coverage rules and exclusions; Atlassian also documents a short refresh delay for certain administrator permission changes.

  • 【OpenWrt & USB 3.0 Expansion】OpenWrt with 1GB DDR4 and 8GB eMMC lets you install plugins and build VPN, ad-blocking or NAS, while USB 3.0 Type‑C connects high-speed storage or 4G/5G dongles

Use these alerts as additional context, not as a substitute for request-level file-access monitoring. They depend on audit events and are not described as a complete system for detecting attachment downloads.

What should you preserve for an investigation?

Central forwarding matters because each node’s local files have finite, configurable rotation and retention. Preserve records outside that local rotation window and make sure a central search can distinguish nodes and place events in time. Atlassian recommends retaining copies for longer investigations; the appropriate retention period depends on the deployment’s needs and policy.

Atlassian documentation does not establish a universal detection threshold or a security-effectiveness statistic for these approaches. Tune alerts against normal use in your own environment and investigate patterns rather than treating a single request as a conclusion.
