Start with the care label sewn into each garment: it sets the safe wash temperature, bleach rules, and drying method for that particular pair of scrubs. To reduce avoidable fading, pilling, and wear, sort lights from darks, turn garments inside out, use a suitable mild detergent, and avoid unnecessary heat. These precautions help preserve scrubs, but cannot guarantee they will never change with repeated laundering.
Build your laundry routine around the garment label
Scrubs made from similar fibers may still need different care because their dyes, stitching, elastic, zippers, prints, and finishes differ. UNDAMED says its care recommendations are specific to each model and that the finished garment’s label takes priority. Strauss likewise advises: “Always follow the care label on the garment.”

Check the label before the first wash and follow its instructions for temperature, bleach, tumble drying, and ironing. If two garments have different instructions, do not assume they can share the same settings just because they look or feel alike.
General fabric guidance can offer context, but it does not override the label. UNDAMED’s 2026 guidance describes typical washing temperatures of 30–40°C for polyester, viscose, and elastane blends, and usually 40°C for cotton/polyester with a small amount of elastane. It describes 100% cotton as typically washed at 40°C, with 60°C only when the care label allows it. These are manufacturer recommendations, not universal settings for all scrubs. Wash to reduce fading, abrasion, and pilling
- Separate lights and darks. This reduces the chance of dye transfer between colors. Strauss includes color separation in its medical-apparel washing guidance: How do I wash medical apparel?
- Turn scrubs inside out. Washing with the outer surface facing inward helps limit surface abrasion; Landau also recommends inside-out washing to reduce pilling. Landau Care Tips
- Close zippers and similar closures. This helps prevent them from catching on fabric during washing. Follow any model-specific instructions for closures or embellishments.
- Use a suitable mild, color-safe detergent if the label permits it. The guidance supports this detergent category, not a particular brand or product.
- Avoid unapproved bleach and fabric softener. Aggressive bleach can damage color. Softener can interfere with breathability or moisture-wicking in some medical apparel, so use it only when the garment’s instructions allow it.
- Choose a permitted cycle and temperature. Use a setting within the label’s allowed range. A lower allowed temperature may be sufficient for lightly soiled clothing, but there is no one setting established for every scrub.
Dry with as little unnecessary heat as practical
Air drying is a conservative option when convenient and compatible with the label. If tumble drying is allowed, choose low heat rather than making high heat the default. Careletics recommends cold or warm machine washing up to 104°F/40°C with like colors for its listed fabrics and low-heat tumble drying. It warns that high heat can damage stretch fibers and reduce the effectiveness of its durable water repellent (DWR) coating; that warning applies to its treated fabric and is not a universal specification for every scrub. Take extra care with stretch, printed, and treated scrubs
Stretch fibers, graphics, and performance finishes may have care needs that generic advice does not capture. Use the instructions for the actual garment model rather than borrowing a temperature or drying rule from a different fabric. In particular, do not raise the wash temperature based on fiber content alone: the label accounts for the finished garment, not just its main fiber.
