Keep a durable changelog for shipped product updates, use a status page for service health and incidents, and deliver each message through a channel suited to its urgency and audience. Routine release news rarely needs an interruption; a change that requires action or an active service incident may warrant direct notification.
Give customers a durable source of truth
A dashboard-only changelog is easy to miss because customers see it only when they visit. Keep product changes in a changelog customers can access outside the app, and use a separate status page for current service health and incidents. The changelog answers “What changed?”; the status page answers “Is the service working, and what is happening now?”

One publishing workflow can distribute product updates to several destinations: AnnounceKit describes changelog publishing alongside in-app widgets, email, Slack, and RSS. PagerDuty’s status-page guidance addresses incident updates, customer-readable service components, and subscriptions.
Match each message to its channel
Choose a channel based on urgency, who is affected, and whether the recipient must do something. The following is a practical routing approach, not a universal standard.

- Transform audio playing via your speakers and headphones
- Improve sound quality by adjusting it with effects
- Take control over the sound playing through audio hardware
| Message | Primary destination | When to add a direct notification |
|---|---|---|
| Routine feature release | Changelog entry | Use a relevant in-app announcement or email digest when customers are likely to benefit from seeing it. |
| Change requiring preparation or action | Direct email to affected administrators or users, with the change recorded in a durable location | Send notice early enough for recipients to prepare; state the impact, deadline, and required action. |
| Service incident or maintenance | Status-page update | Offer opt-in notifications through suitable channels such as email, Slack, or webhook subscriptions. |
| Personal assignment or user-specific event | In-app notification | Add an external fallback when the event warrants it and the user may not be in the product. |
Salesforce describes Product & Service Notifications for changes that may affect functionality or usage, including actions customers may need to take. Salesforce Help says: “These communications are not marketing emails; they are communications based on your organization’s Salesforce implementation.”
For routine news, a digest or in-app message can complement the changelog without treating every release as urgent. AnnounceKit describes per-post and digest email, as well as in-app widgets, Slack, and RSS. For user-specific messages, Intercom documents one approach to avoiding duplicates: delayed email and mobile push can be suppressed if the recipient reads the message in Messenger during the delay. That is an example of one implementation, not an industry standard.

Reduce notification noise
Not every system event is a customer-facing event. Separate customer-impacting incidents and action-required notices from account or workflow events and routine product updates. Then target messages to the people affected, offer preference controls where possible, and batch low-priority news rather than interrupting everyone.

Microsoft documents distinguishing transient issues from permanent failures to reduce unnecessary email to administrators and on-call staff.
- Use direct delivery selectively. Reserve interruptive channels for meaningful impact, deadlines, or events customers have chosen to follow.
- Let customers control subscriptions. Provide category or component subscriptions where the system supports them, so customers can follow relevant updates without receiving every notice.
There is no established universal weekly, monthly, or per-release digest cadence in the cited guidance. Salesforce says cadence depends on notification type and recommends giving notice as early as possible when customers need to act. Set timing according to the message’s urgency and the time recipients need to respond.
Write incident updates around customer questions
During an incident, customers need to know what they may experience, which service is affected, and when they will hear from you again. Use familiar, customer-facing component names rather than internal system labels. If the cause or resolution is not yet known, say what is established and provide a time for the next planned update.
- Identify the affected service. Name the component in language customers recognize.
- Describe the impact. Explain what users may see or be unable to do.
- Set an update expectation. Give the time of the next planned update, even if investigation is ongoing.
- Offer subscriptions. Let customers follow the incident through an appropriate notification channel.
- Close the loop. Post a resolution update when service is restored.
PagerDuty’s status-page guidance covers impact, expectations, customer-facing component names, subscriptions, and closure updates.

- Channel coverage: Check for the destinations you need, such as email, in-app messaging, status pages, Slack, RSS, and webhooks.
- Audience targeting: Determine whether you can target by role, account, plan, geography, or affected service.
- Subscriptions and noise controls: Look for preferences, digest options, opt-in subscriptions, and de-duplication behavior.
- Publishing workflow: See whether one approved update can populate the durable record and selected delivery channels.
- Operational fit: For incident communications, check integration with incident workflows, permission controls, and customer-readable service components.
AnnounceKit describes one-to-many product-update publishing, while PagerDuty describes status-page and incident-communication features. Those descriptions illustrate different jobs; they do not establish that either tool is right for every team.
